For any sportsman looking for a challenging opportunity other than barrel-melting with ducks and doves in Uruguay, partridge hunting organized by Black River Outfitters, is the perfect alternative.

Mornings and afternoons can be spent with smart pointers in clover and wheat fields, practicing one of Uruguay’s most sport-minded upland hunting.

A very traditional game in Uruguay, partridges are extremely challenging even for the most seasoned quail or pheasant hunter. Flanked by leading English setters or Brittany spaniels working low and tight canvassing the field, two hunters follow closely behind ready for the shot.

Uruguayan partridges are stocky, a slightly larger version of a quail or grouse and will crouch in hiding as the dogs approach to within a few yards, at which point they punch out low with a loud flutter and a burst of quick wing beats…… 20……30…..40 yards out before a bead can be drawn.

They are hardy, fast, and create distance very quickly, making them a formidable quarry. Limits in Western Uruguay are easily attainable on any given day with Black River Outfitters, but not without a steady aim and some good reaction time.

As with most upland bird hunting, the challenge of the partridge (Perdiz) is second only to the show put on by the beautiful upland bird dogs.

Overall partridge (perdiz) hunting in Uruguay is a “can’t miss – can we go again tomorrow” attraction for traveling wing-shooters; just remember to bring your stealth and a steady aim.
