British Foreign Office Minister Chris Bryant visits Chile for the inauguration of President-elect Sebastian Piñera, Thursday March 11 and to see areas of Chile affected by the recent earthquake.
Minister Bryant pointed out to the long standing close bilateral relation between the UK and Chile.
“I am pleased to be visiting Chile, along with many other representatives of governments far and wide, for President Piñera’s inauguration. The UK and Chile have a long standing close bilateral relationship. It's especially important for the world to show solidarity as the earthquake relief effort continues”, said Minister Bryant.
The Foreign Office Minister is scheduled to see areas of Santiago affected by the recent earthquake and how UK aid is being put to use. This includes the delivery of 600 tents from the UK which will provide temporary accommodation for up to 3,000 people, a £250,000 donation to the Red Cross to help with immediate needs for water, sanitation and shelter and a 15% contribution to the €3 million pledged by the EU Commission in 'fast-track primary emergency' funds to provide immediate relief to Chile.
Minister Bryant also praised the resilience of Chile, “normal life has recovered quickly in many areas and the authorities are keen for business travellers and tourists to return. But there are still considerable needs to be tackled in some places and I'm pleased the UK is able to help. The great human cost leaves a scar which will take far longer to heal.”
“This visit gives me the opportunity for me to see first hand the work that is being done following the recent earthquake devastation, assisted by donations from the UK government, and to meet the people that have been working so hard to bring stability to the lives of the people affected by such a traumatic event”.
The Minister will also meet British business leaders.
