Brazil can not move into the role of an international power broker until the shanty towns are cleaned up. Good to see it is getting done.

They really should just bulldoze all of the illegal construction and get rid of the cesspool once and for all. Are you seeing this CFK?

I don't think Brazil should concentrate so much of becoming an international power or whatever. It's not worth, and cost only money, look at the US. I think it's is good what the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian Federal government is doing. It shows they are interested, or finally interested, in cleaning up the mess (kill the criminals) what was created long time ago, by doing nothing. They are right by letting the hard working people live free from fear, because they are the only one who can transform the favelas into orderly neighborhoods, what take years. Rocinha is good example.

I don't think they're getting rid of illegal constructions. To do that without providing the favelados a new home would only worsen poverty. And more severe poverty would cause even more social unrest and criminality. Military involvement in the more typical police activities in the favelas is common when violent activity gets out of control in those regions.

Of course fredbdc, starting with the USA. These are just some videos, nothing more than that. There are thousands of videos and articles on shanty towns in USA, tent towns, etc etc etc. There are thousands of homeless people in the USA, but hey! you are living an easy life man! So you don't have any idea that not everyone is as lucky as you are, so you just close your eyes and don't worry about other people's suffering. Who cares, right? There are shanty towns, tent towns, or whatever you like to call it everywhere, in all parts of the world, Alfredo. You are a nobody, posting comments like you are form the USA when you talk about Plaza Once, jaja, you're so stupid, faking a nationality that you don't have. Anyway, you are a big joke, but enjoy living inside your bubble. I can imagine your response to my comment, and I'm laughing with anticipation hahaha. Piss off, Alfredo.

Xbox, I never said we don't have poor people. I know we don't have permanent shanty towns though. They may spring up from time to time but the police always clear them out then the town cleans them up. They are not legal and the neighbors don't let them last long. I mean who wants those people around their neighborhood driving down the property values and creating mischief?.
If you really watched the 1st video they are reporting about he police/town clearing them out. It is not cruel, illegal construction or tent cities are un-sanitary and probably fire hazards. We have to clean them out and clean them up before people get hurt or sick and sue the government for not taking care of it. We have different standards of cleanliness than you do in South America.
My family has been in the USA from the very late 1600s, as you know I am very proud to be American. I thank God everyday for the privilege of living here and being part of this great nation. Can you say the same?

You know I wasn't always so Nationalistic. It wasn't until I lived in your filthy, corrupt county that I really learned to appreciate the USA and its people.

I'm a brazilian man and I have a comment for this news:
In the first paragraph did you mean that ”caused tens of killings (including innocent by-passers)“, but the information are distorced because the killing innocent can't be included in tens, it's not really! the innocent killed people are less and you said much more! moreover, the ”military support” is taking carefull with brazilian innocent people. The armed machines is just used to safety the perimeter.
This work of government is in function of the development and growing. This country are changing. Think about a equivalent territory...
