United States expects the Egyptian government to honour previous peace agreements with Israel regardless of who is in power, the White House said Friday.

“Our expectation would be that whatever the next government of Egypt is, that they would adhere to a treaty signed by the government of Egypt,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Gibbs was referring to the 1978 Camp David Accords, which were brokered by US President Jimmy Carter and set the stage for the 1979 peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, which is in force to this day.

The political turmoil in Egypt and the possible ouster President Hosny Mubarak has led to widespread concern– particularly in Israel - that a new government in Cairo will not be as friendly towards Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced fears last week that Egypt may follow in the extremist footsteps of Iran.

“Our real fear is of a situation that could develop ... and which has already developed in several countries including Iran itself -- repressive regimes of radical Islam,” said Netanyahu.

Netanyahu continued, adding that although the protests may not be motivated by religious extremism, “in a situation of chaos, an organized Islamist body can seize control of a country. It happened in Iran. It happened in other instances”.

The Camp David Accords were signed by former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and have remained in place under Mubarak, who is widely viewed as a source of stability in the region.

“The treaty is not with a particular president,” Gibbs said. “It is with the government, the country and the people of Egypt.”

Israel has been particularly concerned about a potential rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in a post-Mubarak era. The Islamist group, officially banned under Mubarak, has traditionally opposed any peace agreements with Israel but more recently has alluded to a more lenient position vis-à-vis the Camp David Accords

Israel is not afraid. Those who think that, forget history´s lessons.
The last time Egypt went to war against Israel, they lost the Sinai and the IAF bombed strategic targets in as far as Cairo. The same happened to Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, everyone took losses against the Israeli army, one of the best in the world. Israel won all the wars they waged to destroy their country.

Just to remind their Arab and Persian neighbors not to get too cocky when purchasing newbies from the russians, in 2007, Israel´s IAF blinded Syria’s brand new and super expensive Air Defense System, Pantsir-S1, which they acquired from Russia at very hefty prices, billions of dollars spent for nothing, and these defense systems were also purchased by Iran.
They failed miserably against Israel´s IAF tactics and technology. The Syrians didn´t even know whether the intruding aircraft came in from the East, West, or South, Israel´s IAF were able to bomb targets at will and got home for dinner the same day.

Israel ridiculed Russian made weaponry once again as they have always done for decades and demonstrated to Iran and Syria that to this day there is no russian made radar system capable enough to stop their air force. So they´d better get a different supplier.

Egypt´s people must find their way to democracy or whatever kind of government they wish to have, good luck for them. Israel fears none. peace will come one day when everyone accepts Israel´s right to exist.
