An enemy of all populist governments and a true friend of the people. No one loves South America more than Vargas Llosa. When Anibal Fernandez wins a Nobel, then he can criticise Vargas Llosa's brilliance, until then, he should just shut up and stop trying to censor and denigrate a mind that clearly outshines his.

I have enjoyed Sr. Mario Vargas Llosa’s books as much as Hr. Knut Hamsun’s.
Both those Nobels are breathtaking writers and ave-inspiring fascists.

The true strength of a democracy may be measured by its tolerance of unpopular speech.

the Peruvian “hasn’t missed an opportunity to gratuitously insult our government on several occasions,
[can I rephrase that remark with my own ]

the Argentineans’ “hasn’t missed an opportunity to gratuitously insult our government on several occasions
A case of the pot calling the kettle black , I believe

    A true opinion I think

My wife is a fan of his literature, although neither of us are particularly keen on his ultra-right views.

I found this lovely quote of his:

“ One of our worst defects is the belief that we have imported our difficulties and miseries from abroad, that others are always to blame for our problems.....“

Seems reasonable enough, right? Always good to do a bit of soul-searching, always blaming others rarely gets you anywhere, etc, etc. He then goes on to say:

”But only those societies can be called integrated in countries where the native population is limited or non-existent, or where the aboriginals have been practically exterminated.”

I'll let that speak for itself......

....That said, if he's just going to a book fair to talk about literature, rather than say, Grand Theft Auto Misiones, then I think that he should be allowed to appear. Maybe have someone at the ready to pull the curtain at the first sign of goosestepping though.....
