The EU must look after its own farming interests. After mad cow disease and foot and mouth it would be political suicide for the EU to allow risky meat products into the European market. I'm sure our friends in South America will understand.

Mad cow disease had its origin in Europe. So it's European food products that shouldn't be allowed in foreign markets.

Growth hormones, veterinary drugs not approved for inclusion in the food chain. South America has them all in their desperate attempt to appear “viable”. Don't want any of that crap in Europe. Dump it in the ocean. It will save us the trouble. Wouldn't buy anything originating in South America anyway!

6 Dear me, are you for real?
7 Thats why we're aiming to put so much duty on anything coming out of Argentina that we won't need to be competitive.

    @Typhoon

“Wouldn't buy anything originating in South America anyway!”

That's your problem. But that EU farmers are lobbying to preclude any agreement from being reached, is a proof that a significant part of the EU market would buy South American products. After all, we have a better record in selling foodstuff than you do. Like the EU, Mercosur is a big exporter of food products. But unlike the EU, it has never exported diseases to the world abroad. So go gorge yourself with your contaminated, diseased meat. That will indeed save you some problems - like physical welfare. Just remember, it was your country, the UK, that spread to the world the disease known as the mad cow disease.

Yes correct, it appeared there many times. Incredible how some clowns here like to deny that.
As an European I want competition, what is good for the consumers. I am also for ending those damn subisidies. It is my tax money, being wasted while the farmers aren't really helped at all.

Growth hormones, veterinary drugs not approved for inclusion in the food chain

Typhoon play station idiot, Educate yourself. In Europe they do the same thing. Grass eating cows from South America is far much better quality (Not wigh GM corn)

Who care what EU thinks of our meat anyhow, we are at a point in history that if they refuse to buy the meat we can still sale the methane gas from the wasted and still make a profit from the energy prodused.

Seriously Turkey isn't in the EU. Don't think it ever will be either.

Türkia directly import carcass meat from Uruguay.

my view is that the EU must be structured at different format not
like as present form....it has 50.000 pages junk and useless regulations
they can't understand and solve the last econ crisis...USA is different model who has many states not like Europe's countries...Euro money
is not realistic technically...they have no global strategical willpower...
    clumsy & lazy....

yul, to be precisely Germany, Netherlands and Belgium already import beef from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. It's just that those ugly potato heads from that banana republic called Ireland are scared for competition, and they know their quality is crap. Competition is good for us consumers in the EU. period.

The absurd structure of european subsidies for food-producing in the EU has been draining exhausts vaults there. Crisis is elsewhere around.
Possible reactions: absurd protectionism that is exampled in a pair of short sighted comments above, or some kind of partnership with genuine producers, for example LatAm./Australia/SouthAfrica.
The first one, probably will deteriorate more their few opportunities for exporting industrialized goods from EU.
