Spain’s longstanding claim over the sovereignty of Gibraltar looked destined to continue into the next generation of Spanish politics as the heir to the Spanish throne, the Prince of Asturias, used a state dinner for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall to reiterate Spain’s desire to ‘progress’ on Gibraltar. The UK will not have it good at the end.
Quite apart from the rights of the people of Gibraltar, the Spanish would get more respect in their claim if they returned Ceuta & Melilla to Morrocco. Keep dreaming about tables, Martin.

Apr 03rd, 2011 - 10:41 am - Link - Report abuse 0Wasn't it awfully similar to the previous referendum on Spanish rule?
The number 99 springs to mind, can't think why...
“We have at times been bounded by trade, by politics, by Treaty and by marriage. And, at other times, we have been divided by war, by religion and by economic rivalry. But I think I can say without fear of contradiction that throughout the centuries, one thing we have never lacked is mutual respect and admiration, irrespective of the side of the argument on which we have found ourselves”

Apr 03rd, 2011 - 01:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0....How? Spain has been moaning about gibraltar for longer then you lot have about the falklands.
They even signed it away, legally.
Oh dear Martin, and I've just seen you crying ignorance by Islanders and Brits over Argentina :)
Apr 03rd, 2011 - 08:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Now my turn to cry ignorance by you over Gibraltar :)
Argentina has alot to learn from this situation, Spain has turned off the aggression and is now actively wooing the Gibraltarians, Spain has got further in the last 10 years with this policy than in the last 300 years with the previous policy of bitch slapping and isolation.
In fact when you go to Spain, the Rock or La Linea, the whole place is marked by the absence of any dispute and hard feelings, it is as one local put it The hobby horse of the political elite, another one said where else would I get duty free wine and cigarettes so close to home.
Perhaps its time Argentina should start extolling the benefits that Islanders would have under Argentina, instead of rhetoric....you want the UK to negotiate, well offer something constructive then, other than ”You are terribly naughty for not negotiating or listening to a now (de-funct) UN assembly resolution, if you don't negotiate with us we will say naughty things about you and prevent Argentina companies from drilling in our waters, oh yes and we don't recognise the islanders because they are a mighty inconvenience and this self-determination thing is tedious as it denies us sovereignty” and so on and so forth?
Why do I get the impression sometimes that Argentina has evolved slightly isolated from the rest of the world? The maximum international interaction you have at the minute is with....eeer? Other former Iberian colonies....
Today Britain sends 600 royal marines, and 4 ships to give humanitarian

Apr 04th, 2011 - 09:02 am - Link - Report abuse 0Gibraltar will NEVER be Spanish. Why? Because the people of Gibraltar don't want to be Spanish. They see so many things they don't like on the other side of the border. As witness La Linea's inability to pay its own employees because it is broke.
Quite a parallel with the Falkland Islands actually. People who have been in place for eight or nine generations look over the water and want none of what they see. Even without the threats, the breaches of the UN Charter and the breaches of international law.
and in neither case will Britain back down. Not in 5 years, not in 50 years, not in 500 years.
@7 Martino, so by your reckoning, its alright for Spain to keep 2 cities near Morrocco's coast but not alright for Britain to keep one city near Spain's coast? Hypocrite! Are you Spanish?

Some may ask why these above dislike the British so much,
For their remarks are nothing short of degrading at the best of times
We are not perfect by any standards, but these ,would surly have to be considered for the noble support prize, for no others will you find support for everything that is bad in this world, they twist turn manipulate and try to down beat anyone that opposes them their ideals are more worthy of the street than, of respect or honour, isn’t it a shame then that they have the undying honour to be not only matched by the best, but beaten by the best, some would say their biggest mistake was trying to insult the British,
Rather than the usual riffraff they abuse and mistreat, for one might feel they should be honoured to be in the presence of such sophisticated noble people, that not only lead by respect, but once in a while chastises such rude unrespectful men,, they call themselves Argentine, but most decent Argentineans would not touch them with a barge pole, ,so they cant be the best, they cant beat the best,
they cant even be decent Argentineans, so they reduce themselves to insulting and browbeating others
Then get upset when their insults back fire,. For these above are most certainly rejected by all decent bloggers, I could of course be totally wrong, perhaps we have misunderstood them, perhaps underneath they are decent people, perhaps even decent caring and understanding,
[but then perhaps not,] perhaps just some of them are deluded fools, , and the Falklands
[when hell freezes over ] for ever will they remain British, just a thought .sleep tight ???
@18 Martin_Fierro. yes, really. When do you plan to return the land that your country stole from Paraguay? You do want to do the right thing and return it to its rightful, legitimate owners, do you not?

Actually I don't hate anybody just the Internal Revenue Service. Do I believe that Malvinas belongs to my country, Yes! Do I agree with the 82 conflict, No. Do I believe in any history written by men, Hell no. Did I post any inflamatory stories of war to degrade the enemy, Hell no. Tut tut Martin :) I may not be literate in Spanish, but I understand the spoken word quite a bit.
Apr 05th, 2011 - 06:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0As far as I could tell (obviously correct me if I'm wrong), the programme is peddling the little known conspiracy theory this side of the South Atlantic that the UK in 2009 intended to annex virtually all of the coast line of Patagonia to get all dem lovely barrels of oil and dem lovely fishies :)
It then went on a bizarre tangent which involved the EU grand conspiracy theory, that the EU intends to use the Falklands and other disputed UK possessions as an entry point into Antartica and a strategic control of eeer ummm the Cape Horn passage? The most infamous and treacherous sea route known to man kind which any sensible commercial sea captain avoids like hell fire?
Obviously the film makers have never heard of the Panama Canal
Of course all this was meant to have happened well over 3 years ago :) have the invasion plans been postponed or something?
And anyway why was Argentina so frightened? You claim the UN is on your side repeatedly, well it is a UN body who approves all these EEZ things innit? Was Argentina worried they might not agree with Argentina's ”we have de sovereignty over territory (we have never controlled or possesd)”, given they also ignored your EEZ claim to 3 times your own landmass, we must conclude that the UN at least in the maritime sense is not filled with idiots.
I notice the video also did not hit upon the other theory, that it was nothing more than an attempt by the UK to challenge Argentina sovereignty claims over the afor mentioned areas, seeing as we got the first punch in it worked, Argentina was wrong footed and looked slightly silly when you bleeted that we were going to claim half of Patagonia, and then tried to treble your landmass haha tuff look tuts ;)
I just watched the video, I did not understand the lingo, but the union jack all over the south Atlantic was very impressive, a conspiracy theory perhaps, but looks ok, pity we cant claim it,
Apr 05th, 2011 - 07:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Perhaps a referendum of that , Patagonia to be British may be considered,
If it is only a conspiracy theory , it’s a good one, ,just a thought.

Spain does control 2 cities ON Morrocco's coast. Don't you think that it would do their case a lot of good about thereturnof Gibraltar, if they returned those 2 cities to Morrocco?

Surely a country still claiming 14 colonies wouldn't have any moral qualms about Spain's claim on Canary Islands, would it?
Between 1811 and 1976 Spain has granted full independence to colonies in over 20 different countries. How many colonies has the UK granted independence to?

Apr 07th, 2011 - 04:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Because Artillero it shows the irony of the pathetic calls about victimhood over the Falklands that Argentine politicians and nationalists make.
Apr 07th, 2011 - 05:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0How can any self respecting politician rant about the theft of a group of islands 400 km from your coast.....from within the confines of land that was also thieved, but on a slightly more epic scale.
It just seems to me double standards......Argentina takes over huge tracks of land.....Muy Bueno! No crime ere guvn'or!
The UK takes a very modest slice of the South Atlantic, and suddenly we're worst than hitler with evil henious designs to subvert Argentina and kill all the penguins :)
@92, Rhaurie, exactly! the problem is that they don't like to lose or admit that they are wrong. We've won some & we've lost some. You can't win all the time, but we've got over it & moved on. They don't seem to be able to. They convinced themselves that Britain was going to be a pushover, much like Mussolini with hisdecadent effeminate democracies in 1940. That we fought back & retook OUR land profoundly shook them. Their government fell as a consequence. We all know this of course, just reiterating!
Apr 08th, 2011 - 08:45 am - Link - Report abuse 0What a country going to waste, it should be the showcase of South America.
Two statements of note always get me chuckling....the first No Argentine army can lose on Argentine soil
Apr 08th, 2011 - 01:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0- How wrong did that statement prove to be :)
As the 2 IC of 2 para after Goose Green said: Despite all the propaganda that this was scared Argentine soil to die for, they just didn't have the fight in them, which makes me think they really did not think this was a cause worth losing their lives over
the second one: An Intel corps officer when interviewing one of his Argentine counterparts, who gave him an astonishing pre war assessment of the British armed forces: We we're told time and time again that the British Army is a pathetic spent fighting force, and is rampant with homosexuality, and that Argentine troops were far superior and Macho....We also concluded that Britain would not do anything, because of the distances involved and that due to the draw down of forces in the South Atlantic Britain did not really believe the territory to be hers, even up until the point that the task force was sailing of the Malvinas, we still believed this to be an impotent show of force, having based all our assessments on the British reaction form the Goa conflict 20 years earlier
Need I say more :) If no Argentine army could lose on Argentine soil and the British were inferior soldiers to Argentines, there must have indeed been black magic at work :)
.......hence Martins allegations of the Super genetically modified Dolphin men of the US navy super cobra ninja squad XD LOL!
Yes it did shake them, obviously questions had to be asked, but the most obvious it appears are still ignored......that the UK really does believe this is its sovereign territory and the UK really was looking after its citizens interests.
Of course the simplest explanations are no where near as fun as the mega oil darwin clifton penguin assassin theories that More-crap and the rest of the Goon platoon beleive :)
94 Rhaurie-Se Cagawell “We we're told time and time again that the British Army is a pathetic spent fighting force, and is rampant with homosexuality”
Apr 08th, 2011 - 05:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Well, the first part was proven in Iraq and the second one you can see it yourself in the video below, filmed at Malvinas islands.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_the_militaries_of_ancient_Greece
@101 ....I don't think so Mr Think. Some countries allow homosexuals to serve , some don't. In my times (in Argentina) , they were not allowed, now ? I don't know what the policy is. Here in the US, people want to revoke the ” Don't ask, don't tell policy ....will see what happens. if you want to talk about being bisexual in Ancient times, that's a different subject all together
