Unasur (Union of South American Nations) leaders sent UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon a letter dated April 2 in support of Argentina’s sovereignty claim over the Falklands Islands.
A copy of the letter was distributed during the main commemoration in Argentina of the Malvinas war Fallen and Veterans Day headed by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and which took place in Rio Gallegos.
The Unasur letter signed by the heads of state and government from Unasur reiterates the “strong support to the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, Georgias del Sur and Sandwich del Sur Islands”.
Unasur leaders recall several documents particularly the “Declaration on the Islas Malvinas question” following the second summit of the South American community, among many other statements.
In that respect “we wish to ratify the standing regional interest that the UK agrees to resume negotiations with Argentina to achieve, as soon as possible, a peaceful solution to the referred dispute”, reads the letter.
Finally “we request the UN Secretary General lets us know the advances in the fulfilment of your mission”.
