Queen Elizabeth honoured Irish people killed fighting for independence from Britain in a powerful gesture of reconciliation few people would have believed possible even in recent times. Read full article
Even after 100years this still resonates, particularly because of the troubles in that other country, Northern Ireland.
But the symbolism should not be lost on the Argentineans, for whom the Falklands is their Ireland.
Reconciliation needs symbolism that shouts to the world that something different and important in the state of affairs has taken place.
There is a lesson for us all. 800+ years ago the Irish invited their English cousins to visit and help sort out some troubles. The English stayed. So, the next time you invite some overseas relatives to stay, make sure they have a return ticket. : )
But, honestly, the majority of people just get along fine without any animosity. Something like 3 million Irish live peacefully in the UK. It is always the minority that want to continue to stir up hatred.
Without a doubt so far the visit has been a big success thanks to BOTH GOVERNMENTS SEEING THE NEED FOR COMPROMISE AND NEGOTIATION.With regard to the Malvinas/Falklands Cristina Kirchner has recognized this but unfortunately not yet her majestys government. But just as Martin Mcguiness masterminded dragging the Brits to the negotiation table Argentina will do the same when it costs enough. As I have said Amigos Argentinos con los Ingleses es siempre guita
I don't know - perhaps the parallel symbolism would be the Spanish king coming to Argentia for a joint 'closing of the book' on this colonial history.
Great Britain did this many times in the 1960s.
And I guess from King Pedro onwards, many European monarchs have made the same apology to the South American indiginants for what they considered to be nation-building but which the indiginants termed colonization.
Through the decades of breeding/cross-breeding and the relative mortality rates due to the susceptibilities to each others diseases, and through the genocides and counter-killings, lands were carved out and new nations with flags supplanted the old.
So much so that a colonial reconciliation by the Spanish would be reconciling with a majority proportion of Spanish and other European genes, not the indiginants in their pristine glory.
After such a long time the true apologies and reconciliations should come from the nationals with the European genes, both in North America and in South America.
. . . . and this does not take into account the reconciliations with the millions of African genes imported into the Americas.
We must stop our global breast-beating and move on, for our future will surely embrace more sets of cultures swamping earlier 'indiginants'.
Poor Irish People, it won it's independence from the UK, but it still fights a financially war against the British banksters who received the bailout through Irish Banks.
O Gara - can you list some of the compromises apparently offerred by CK?
Also what offers of negotiations please- you cannot have any negotiation over what you very strongly claim belongs to you- sovereignty- all CK wants to negotiate about is the date of handover and who pays who,- I know that- you know that- and CK knows it.
When people enter intonegotiations it means you dont know the outcome or what each side may well have to give up on to reach a compromise agreement all sides accept.
Now the official Arg Govt position of Sovereigny is imprescriptible or whatever that means in Spanish - bascially means the final outcome is NOT negotiable. That means to the rest of us who live in the real world - there is actually then NOTHING to talk about.
You see at the moment it is so easy for us and UK to tell Arg to get stuffed - change your attitude, become concilliatory and mend bridges with us and call for negotiations with no preconceived outcome etc etc - THEN our side would be in a more difficult spot.
@6 O'Gara, & 7 Think,
NO negotiations with Argentina, no discussions with Argentina.
Nothing to talk about until you remove THAT clause from your constitution & drop your ridiculous claims.
O gara (#)--------I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your comment about that rat Mcguiness, having givin it a moment I think I will just have a good old giggle at your expence
