Out of every 1,000 girls aged 15-19 in Chile, 51 become pregnant and give birth to a child, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). These latest figures place Chile’s percentage below pregnancy rates for all other South American countries, but still far behind nations outside the region. Read full article

    What's the point of the UK comparison?

    @1 Quite.

    For every pregnant teenage girl there is also bloke who also failed to use birth control.

    1 Forgetit87, Once in a while this fine news organization loves to compare anything, related or not, to the country that pay their bills, only when is a positive news for them of course.

    On reflection I think the UK may have been used as a comparison because it has the highest number of teenage pregnancies in Europe. Just sayin'.

    South Korea (3/100,000), one of Chile's Free Trade Agreement partners, could show Chile (51/100,000) how to keep teenage pregnancies to a bare minimum.

    Now that would be a good 'product' to swap for copper!

    5 ElaineB And you really think that's the real reason? Just saying.

    @ElaineB

    Just to make it clear, I'm not complaining about the comparison. Just think it is funny that they chose the UK as a reference (which lacks in the original article). Just goes to show what I've been saying, Mercopress's coverage is designed to appeal to a British audience.

    @Geoff

    The numbers variations probably owe a lot to deep cultural differences, the sort of differences that government intervention and propaganda cannot remove entirely. Note that teen births in China are much less frequent than in Europe. Perhaps LatAm numbers can in the future be as low as those of Europe, to which it is related, but not as low as East Asia's.

    Correct, that's what I always made clear here how so called northern nations work. Let's not forget that Abortion (I'm personal against it) is very high in Europe where it's normal for many people. In my opinion Europe and slowly the US are promoting a culture of dead.

    Certainly cultural difference come into play. It is not a 'sin' to be a single mother in the UK and thank goodness woman are not still vilified for something men are equally responsible for.

    I wonder how many illegal abortions occur in the countries where an unmarried mother would be ostracised and, therefore, it is not recorded as a statistic? Many women die after illegal abortions so we wouldn't want to go back to the dark ages, would we?

    The answer is to promote safe sex and birth control.

    12- I agree with your last statement, however abortion is a very popular birth control method use for “civilized”nations. Legal abortion, except in some special cases, shouldn't be allowed no just because illegal ones are dangerous is because they are wrong, my personal opinion.

    some ask, why UK has been used as comparison example. I could also ask, why they have chosen Chile and not Venezuela or Colombia as subject of child pregnancy, when first one is one of the lowest in the region. Probably the subject was to point out the comparison of the lowest case in SA vs highest in Europe. That's the only plausible reason to me.

    @13 I am not sure abortion is a 'popular' method of birth control. Certainly, it is an option but there are so many other choices freely available and without stigma attached.

    Personally, I think showing young people pictures of genital warts and other nasties they are likely to pick up if they don't practise safe-sex might dampen their ardour a bit. And make them more responsible for their own health.

    13 - I'm not sure that people are so flippant about abortion to see it as an alternative to condoms or the pill.

    I'm personally pro-choice, it being illegal doesn't stop people getting abortions, and so it should at least be as sanitized as possible.

    In fact, overpopulation is one of the biggest problems that we face as a species, so abortions shouldn't just be legal, they should be mandatory! (joke)

    However, I do appreciate the irony when you read about those Pro-Lifers killing doctors.....

    16' Overpopulation is a huge problem indeed, however killing unborn babies is not the solution,Vasectomy is a safe, simple and effective birth control method ...and less barbaric.

    Yes, Marcos #17,
    but vasectomy on its own facilitates HIV transmission, especially to the woman.
    Condoms give some measure of protection against STDs.

    I was discussing this problem with a charity worker in Peru. Condoms are made freely available in the Villas but still the men will not use them. (Not because of religious reasons). They were planning a publicity drive to try to make their use more acceptable.

    Personally, I think the only way to get to the men is through the approval of their mamas. Maybe an advert where the mama is doing her adult son's washing (even if he is 30!) and she comes across condoms in his pocket. She nods and looks SO proud of her son. Mama's approval; it means everything. : ) That and another 30 years might do it.

    So it's a logical extension of your thesis to say that teenage pregnancies only occur where there is a monogamous relationship ; )
    My best guess is that promiscuous males are NOT 'socking it to 'em'.

    Really Mercopress?

    England being the tiny island that it is, with 50 million rats in it... and you're worried about Chile's population??

    LOL

    God...

    Martin #26,

    in 2002, the BBC reported 60 million rats in the UK, ' roughly one for each person living in the UK' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/2164999.stm);
    so your guess may be just about right for England!

    But remember England isn't an island; the island that it is part of also houses other countries - Scotland and Wales.
    The Great Glen Fault (Loch Ness) tried a bit of geological partition some time ago, and , more recently, Offa tried to dig his way to partition.
    Somehow the three countries stubbornly 'hang together' (to quote from Benjamin Franklin's 1776 Declaration of Independence).
