    Doubly fascinating.
At 3% of the surface flow, it is still significantly bigger than most rivers on earth.
But - and here I am asking the oil people - with the geological eons of vegetative deposition in the Amazon Basin, where is all the on-shore oil?

Geoff, this one is old, but I'm sure you can ask Petrobras for more info in Portuguese. This is the first article that pups up when you search in google; petrobras strikes oil in the amazon

Not long ago they (Petrobras), striked gas in the Peruvian amazon, while the private company of Eike Fuhrken Batista is doing well in the Amazon in Colombia.

Another one active in Amazon is the private Brazilian energy company HRT
