I see trouble ahead ! They will probably get seated next to UK and USA.
The Latam countries are having a joke here. I see Hague is going to love this. Every topic is preceded by the Argie ambassador standing up and saying 'give peace a chance'.
Nearly as good as making the Iranians the chair of the 'Human Rights Committee'.

@ 3 They'll be between Azerbaijan and China: make of that what you will.

In the spirit of the recent fashion of diplomatic language started by Argentina (but surprisingly somehow not yet taken up by any other country) I think the only appropriate thing to do is to quote John Lennon:

    “Revolution, Evolution, Masturbation, Flagellation, Regulation,
    Integrations, Mediations, United Nations, Congratulations”

I wonder what they will say in every statement they make? Ha, ha.

    The south americans have either:

    1. Been pressurised into crying Argies asking for this or
    2. They all want a laugh as we do watching the RG's make idiots of themselves.

Yes, this should be very entertaining.

Theses pygmy politicians seriously believe that they can steal the Falklands from the islanders if they make enough noise, without realising that they have no fucking chance whatsoever.

Just forget about it RG Land; its just not going to happen for you.

@9 Argentina doesn't pressure rest of SA whatsoever, we are more united than ever in our demands :) You are just a bunch of retrogrados whose biggest arguments are personal offences :)

They can start the end of colonialism themselves by giving Argentina back to the native americans, then we might not think they're such hypocrites.

Well, thats going to be a fun two years! At least the stream of nonsense which will flow from the argentinian representatives mouth will lighten up the news during this time of economic gloom.

Non permanent member: does that mean being issued with a folding deck chair, that has to be put away after each session?

“The Republic of Argentina is committed to representing all of the relevant topics for the region“

Oh no it isn't!!! We all know there is only going to be one topic being ”Represented“ and don't think for one minuute that it will be a ”relevant topic for the whole region”.

Argentina will use this to badger and repeat it's claim on the Falklands. We all know that, the only thing we don't know is the point that Chicureo brought up, how loud the laughter will be and how much they will embarrass themselves.

What a laugh, Argentina representing latin america. Here's the agenda:
Item 1. Prayers (said by all the other nations)
    Item 2. The Falklands
Item 3. Militarization of the South Atlantic
    Item 4. The Falklands

    AOB:
The Falklands, Militarization of the South Atlantic.

”Argentina that is an in-fatigable defender of the multilateral organization’s fundamental rights”....

... except for several key principles, including self-determination, peace, ignoring the security council resolutions, reneging on ICJ/ICA jurisdictions, throwing nuns out of planes, et cetera et cetera.

Considering no one can see why Argentina signed the UN Charter only to ignore most of it, I can see his argument clearly.

Typical of Argentina to count their chickens before they've been hatched. They haven't actually got the job yet. If they don't get, whose betting thy blame the evil colonist pirates on the Falklands?

You have to wonder if this is the same support they said they had at the OAS summit, where they swore they had unanimous support for their claim to the Falklands, and left early in a sulk because not only didn't they get support, NO ONE wanted to talk about the Falklands.

However, if they do get elected to the UNSC, I wonder how long it'll take everyone to get tired of their constant whining about the Falklands, or whether they'll all just sit back and snigger at them?

Any way, I don't expect Argentina to table anything but their own agenda and the S.A.'s and Carribean countries may realise they've chosen the wrong people.

The Timerman show part two....coming soon! :o)

This centuary is barely 12 years old and england has been at war 3 times already afghanistan Iraq and Lybia and meddled in god knows how many other countrys. Argentina should get englands place and the england should be put on the same list as Iran.

@29 I was thinking the same thing. There's nothing a bunch of lebensraum-hungry cowards want less than to go up against a pack of war-hardened well-trained folk, who have gone through the motions a few times even before turning up to the show.

I'm saying Argentina will whinge their way onto the security council, taking the place of a good country, and then table naught but falklands-based nonsense. It'll be worse than having North Korea or Iran on there.

@27 - The United Nations was a phrase 1st used by Predsident Roosevelt to describe the Allies in WW2. The top 5 Allies became permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The UK earned their place on the UNSC, mainly by our actions during WW2 and supporting UN operations in Korea, Cyprus, Sierra Leone, Bosnia, Kosovo and dozens of other places. We have consistently supported the UN diplomatically and with both peace-keeping & peace-enforcement troops, and we follow the rule of international law.

On the other hand in recent years Argentina has also provided troops for UN peacekeeping missions, however, their commitment to the rule of international law is inconsistent thus making them a rather unstable member of the UNGA let alone the security council.

Yes, the UK (not England) has been involved in some wars as of late, we invaded Iraq (based on dodgy evidence I grant you), but we were invited to stay by the new Iraqi government, we invaded Afghanistan, and were invited to stay by the Afghan government. We assisted the UN by stopping Col Gaddafi's regime from murdering his OWN people. We landed in Sierra Leone to assist the UN peace-keeping force, which were ineffective against the rebels, and we were asked to stay by the UN and the government of Sierra Leone, we are actively involved in anti-piracy operations off the shore's of Somalia.

I could go on, but the UK has done an awful lot for the UN since it's inception. Argentina is just beginning to get involved.

As for the UK bing put on the same list as Iran, it'll never happen. Argentina, however, is moving ever closer to being put on that list themselves.

@31 In comparison, Argtardia thinks it can 'earn' a place on the UN SC by ignoring the security council resolutions, ignoring the ICJ/ICA, storming out of negotiations, not abiding or believing in the charter of the UN, et cetera, et cetera.

They basically want to worm their way on there by being utter toe-cheese.

This is a serious problem for the UN , if Argentina behaves herself and conduct things in an adult manner, and take her responsibilities seriously, then all will be ok,

But if she embarrasses and shames herself, it will inevitably sham and embarrass south America, and the top 5 would almost certainly have to step in, before she turns UN assembly onto a humiliating circus,

Lets just hope that she takes her responsibilities seriously, for everybody’s sake, shall we .
    Just a thought.

You and I both know that the first thing timmerperson does when he stands up and opens his mouth will be tor ant and rave about the Falklands. Everyone will just face palm themselves.

Behind the scenes RG Land will be told not to disgrace themselves but they'll not be able to help themselves.

It should be fun to watch though.

I think its becoming old pretending that the only country pissed off with Argentina is the UK, their import restrictions have got a lot of countries angry, not to mention the US, Spain and the whole of the EU who are now promising repurcussions with all of mercosur.
