Almost three decades after Fidel Castro took power, Cuba's budding intelligence service fielded four dozen double agents in a world-class operation under the nose of the CIA, according to a new book by a veteran CIA analyst. Read full article
Castro smart but that doesn't make him anymore than a Communist dictator who crushes democracy and freedom in Cuba, while enriching his own family. Grand geo-political military adventures in Africa and sending his henchmen like the murderous Che Guevara to Bolivia are part of his grand plan that didn't do so well. However, its only now under Raul that Cubans can even own a home or sell a car.
As for Cuba's latest crop of spys, like the recently-arrested Russian 10, maybe the quality is going downhill somewhat? However, the usual leftist suspects (academics, radicals, Nobel prize winners) are supporting the Cuban Five convicted spies - similar to those haranguing Falkland Islanders to knuckle-under to Argentina's malvinista campaign.
Shut up, JohnN. Jesus, is it too hard to overcome the desire to preach, preach, preach when you see an article about Castro?
And what is the US, by the way? Some bankrupt country who crushes democracy overseas while enriching big US corporations at the expense of Third World economies and populations, financing death squads and right-wing terrorists in Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America.
4 Forget: Hehehe...Jesus preached too! Hey, I DID say that I agreed that Fidel Castro is smart - its just that this evil man is responsible for many deaths and harassment of innocents that the leftist preachers overlook in their vilification of US foreign and domestic policy.
AND I noted that under the Raul Castro regime, Cuban freedoms are indeed improving significantly - if you consider owning your home and being able to sell your car significant.
One of the small tests of the human accommodation of any regime is who stays and who leaves, and so far the number of Cubans leaving (or trying to) compared to the number returning (and any wayward Anglo-Americans) is running about 10,000 to 1 in favour of those leaving.
However, with more changes - including a reduction in communist constraints and cultural homophobia by the Castro regime - that ratio might change.
¡Vamos a ver!
As an aside, it IS funny that the leftists tend to go along with Castro's wonky lable for the US embargo by calling it a blocade (bloqueo), but of course its only an embargo, because the US doesn't prevent UK or Canada or anybody else from trading with Cuba - and even Americans sell a huge amount of food to Cuba.
Actually, Argentina should also stop their embargo on food to be bought and sold with the Falklands, but the Falklands do get many Argie tourists.
