Cable and Wireless South Atlantic Ltd made a generous donation of £10,000 to the Falkland Islands Overseas Games Association (FIOGA).
The funds which bring the telecommunication company’s donations up to £25,000 over the last three years were gratefully received by FIOGA Chairman Mike Summers who said previous donations had played a big part in helping sports compete overseas that do not have any Commonwealth assistance.
There was a lot of work to be done to ensure the Islands were well represented overseas in the next few years and the contribution made by Cable and Wireless was most appreciated said Mr Summers.
C&W CEO Justin McPhee said FIOGA as a sporting institute fitted in well with the Cable and Wireless corporate and social programme, adding that funding was also planned for future years.
He said it was his personal view that it was also a good way to raise the Falklands’ profile overseas and particularly with the current political climate, helped to show who and what we are as a country.
Cable and Wireless also provides support by hosting the FIOGA website and links for coverage of overseas events, including the substantial football television coverage aired on FITV for the first time last year.
This had been hugely important during the Isle of Wight Nat-West Island games, said Mr Summers, adding that he was hopeful it would be equally effective at the Bermuda games in 2013. (Penguin News).-
