President Federio Franco said he trusted Paraguay would be fully re-incorporated to Mercosur before the general election scheduled for 21 April 2013. Paraguay is currently suspended from the trade block following the removal of Fernando Lugo as president, a decision voted almost unanimously by the country’s Senate but condemned by Mercosur and Unasur. “sooner than later”

I fear there is little chance of that, now Chavez is in the driving seat at Mercosur and Unasur for the next six years.

I don't know, they kicked Paraguay out just long enough to force Venezuela in. Job done. Now they will want to control Paraguay again by letting them in.

If it wasn't for Paraguay's disastrous geographic position it would probably be a good idea to permanently detach from what is likely to become an increasingly protectionist and populist block in the future.

Why is Paraguay doing this? Have they not learned? They are considered a “junior” member. In fact, they would now be the “very junior” member. They will now be considered of less account than Uruguay. Who has to do what it's told anyway. How are they going to get on against the Arg-Bra-Ven rulers? Paraguay needs a “corridor” to the Pacific as required for land-locked countries under international law. Let's say 20 miles wide. Together with the airspace. At the moment Paraguay is under the thumbs of argieland, Brazil and Bolivia. So much better with a connection to the Pacific, Chile and maybe even Peru.

Regardless if Paraguay is in or out of Mercosur, its big neighbors to the north and south will have an affect in both politics and economics. Sometimes it is just better to ride the wave and not stir things up too much. Prevent things like this Ushuaia Declaration and it will be fine. Now UNASUR is useless and Paraguay should leave.

Like I've said before, with time, maybe a few decades, these socialist countries will fail economically and they will have the choice of either going back to more open and free markets or live in misery. Remember, socialism only works until the money runs out. In Hugo's case, that will be either when the oil runs out, prices fall, war, or he just dies.

The need is sooner than later. Feels a little lonely being a right wing fascist in the middle of South America these days.

Prorg - The Partido Liberal is a left leaning political party, which is the party of the current president Franco. Fernando Lugo lost his alliance that he had with the Partido Liberal because he was a bad politician and unable to get things done. So to consider Paraguay as a right wing fascist country only goes to show your ignorance on the subject.

#9 “The Partido Liberal is a left leaning political party”

Only compared to the Colorado Party, which actually presided over a fascist dictatorship for 35 years! Tell me, how do you vote?
