Uruguayan supermarkets pledged to help the government of President Jose Mujica to keep inflation below 10% at the end of the year even when in the first nine months of the year it reached 8.64%. Read full article
Prices should be fixed per definition and only major incidents should be allowed to affect them. Lets try that for a change, because infinite growth is mathematically impossible...
What creates poverty is the foolish notion that the government can control the markets and reacts accordingly.
Also, the massive fiscal drag caused by successive parties bolstering their cronies in government service. They produce nothing, nor in reality do they pay taxes (think about it before jumping down my throat).
What reduces poverty is EDUCATION of the whole population and forming a ‘we can achieve’ credos in all levels of society. This MUST be supported by inward investment and the reduction of fiscal drag by retraining government employees into other lines of work, paying them as necessary.
This government has, to its credit, embarked on a international scheme to encourage investment in Uruguay. This has had some successes but hit a brick wall with poor applicants for the ‘intelligent’ jobs on offer and bolshie unions.
Dare I say it? What Uruguay and many other LatAm countries need is a young LatAm equivalent of Maggie Thatcher. Wait for me to put my motorcycle helmet on!
@1 Guzz, did you and Pirat-Hunter go to the same school? So, you think price-fixing by the government is what will work for an economy? Have you ever heard of the Soviet Union? They tried things like government price-fixing. That worked out really for them didn't it? But hey, let's re-invent that wheel, because we can figure out how to do it better. It's still a wheel dude.
Look at what Chilean Perspective wrote.....that's how an economy should work.
amazing people still think like this, this must be a wind up surely?

Of course it's insane, I mean, neo-liberalism and free market works like a charm, doesn't it? Wiping the middle class every once in a while and keeping the poor poor is something it does flawlessly. Shovel your economic system down the same drain your society is heading, we want neither of it.
