Any action of an Argentine is typically despicable. It would be a surprise if they did something once that was socially acceptable, however small.

Think- yep- lots of whiners- about 40 million last count I think?
Sad when a nation of 40million resort to Hiutler Youth type tactics - still not surprising when you consider all those fast UBoat trips of early-mid 1945
Guess the bloodlines are doing well in Argentina today!

Just a few more irritating little midge bites here is how folks see it in reality, and few more solid reasons that get listed to the free world as to why the Islands would be stark raving mad to ever consider sitting down and talking sovereignty with your lot- and the list gets longer and longer!

    Argentine Government’s acts of intimidation?

All ships heading from South American ports to Malvinas should request permission to Buenos Aires. After all South America recognizes Malvinas as an integral part of the argentine territory.

More evidence of a “de facto” (and illegal) blockade being operated by Argentina.

Never mind the Islanders will soon be able to buy their own cruise line, to go with the Airport and Port. Antarctic tourism made easy via the Falklands.

Truth is Argentina will soon be reduced to being nothing more than an irritation to the Islanders. No influence whatsoever on events in the S. Atlantic. Even less in the Antarctic.

The answer to this issue is to just let the weak tour opperators dissapear and concintrate on the loyal ones who are prepared to stand up to the Argentine thugs. Not all will stop coming. Just need another new advertising campaign to attract the real operators who are not afraid of Argentina. That the Argentine government looses yet another defiant act. Quite a laugh really to see the Argie leaders resorting to these measures because they simply do not know a way that will strangle our economy. Just remember the oil that is soon to be pumped is going to be worth hundreds if not millions more than any loss of a scared tour operator.

An argentinian cruise ship would probably have to be registered in 1930s germany, probably a submarine and be of the same type that brought Maximo's grandparents to Argentina with decidedly dodgy yugoslavian passports or vatican travel papers.

That's pretty much an argentinian cruise.

Ohhh yes, what did I read above, any ship that sails to the islands should get permission from BA, that the islands are an integral part of Argentina. Your having a laugh....the Union Jack flies over the islands children and there is sod all you can do about it, sweet fanny adams!

    Twisted RG Logic ?

'Clarify that blocking the British ship is union causes - The owner of SOMU, Omar Suarez, justified the crackdown driven by his union: “It is a boycott by mandate of the International Federation of Labour,” he said on Radio 10. A group of maritime workers hampered in the port of Buenos Aires the departure of the English ship Seabourn Sojourn , whose destination was the Islas Malvinas . Omar Suarez , general secretary of the Maritime Workers Union (SOMU) said that the protest is because “ the crew has no collective bargaining agreement. ”
According to Suarez, ”we are making arrangements to boycott all flags of convenience of countries by order of a world congress in Mexico was made by the International Transport Federation (ITF) . “
”This falls on the flag of convenience has Great Britain , which are flags of Bermuda, Cayman, Malta and Gibralta r “he said.
The vessel in question carries about 700 tourists and must leave Buenos Aires around the 17 to visit the Islands and end your tour in the Chilean city of Valparaiso.
To the charge of vandalism during the blockade, the holder of said SOMU ”to show solidarity with the cause Malvinas Gaucho Rivero and the law does not mean that we are in political or vandalism.'s the tool that gives us the democracy we are practicing “.
He also denied that the strike is motivated because it is a ship of English origin. ”Companies that make the collective bargaining agreement that requires the FIT, navigate properly,“ said Suarez.
”Beyond making business, companies have to look a little sovereignty of Argentina “, argued the secretary general of the union of maritime workers. He added that ”if we do not ask permission to a country, do not let us enter.“
”They use our docks, oil and water without paying any taxes,” he said.'

    49 Think

I'm not complaining. Not at all.In fact I'm trying, and failing, to imagine anything like this happening in the UK or the Falklands, and that gives me a very warm fuzzy feeling. In fact, it makes one proud to be British.

I'm also very happy that I won't need to listen to sanctimonious prats like you bleat on about that piece of glass around that plastic dolly at Darwin, ever again.

All I can hear is the sound of a country shooting itself in the foot repeatedly, and I can see that carrying on for some time. That doesn't give me any pleasure, but I am quite fascinated to see just where you go with this. There is no gain for you in this course of action at all. It annoys us a little bit, but it also makes you a lot of enemies all over the world. These cruise ship passengers all have families and friends and businesses, and you appear not to care what anyone thinks of you. In fact, we couldn't buy this kind of positive publicity. We don't have to expend any effort to make you look like arseholes, because you do it all by yourselves.
My best guess is that this isn't about the Falklands at all. In which case I feel sorry for you, because when anarchy and lawlessness seem like the best option for a government, it's staring into the abyss.

So no, not whinging at all.

Well, if you want to keep your struthious ways, be my guest. I still don't think we should engage in the very British behavior of trying to strangle the populace to get to the leadership. That is the quintessence of anglo-saxon strategy, and befit only for those under them... dogs, hyenas, and the like.

We shouldn't do the same and I'm ashamed in this instance we are.

But it does show that pride comes at a price Monty. You want to pretend we don't exist, well I don't get why a couple of cruise ships sends all your blood pressures to the alert zone, from a country that “doesn't exist” to you in terms of its influence.

What we do say is that your 'influence' will not affect our attitude, apart from to make our will stronger. The worse you behave, the more unthinkable it becomes that we could ever change our minds. We have been paying the price for a long time now and will continue to pay it.

From some of your remarks I strongly suspect yo don't. from some of your remarks it is uncanny just how you write as if you are actually living on the Islands. It may be true and indeed we actually may know who you really are. If not then you appear to be guessing very cleverly and to be honest i don't think you are clever at all. Just someone who is paid by CFK to be the opposition to comments. Not worried about the yellow gold but very excited about the black gold. When that actually starts to flow Argentina will have to finally admit she lost the fight yet again. Falkland islanders by using the keep calm approach have actually made the government and their followers of Argentina look very imature. Seems your lot get a high from complaining. As far as the conduct towards the cruise ships you can stop the lot of them coming here but what you cannot stop is the self determination of the people of the Falkland Islands so get used to it che.

When the Cruise Company explains to the pasengers why the itinary of the cruise, vis a vis, the call at Stanley has been cancelled, I trust they will tell them the facts, not the usual, “Owing to circumstances beyond our control.”

I doubt there will be that many Brits on the cruise, but it would be hoot, if they docked and none of the passengers disembarked.

I think it would also be a nice touch if they ammended their tourist literature, to reflect the truth, something along the lines of, ”Argentina, land of the Gaucho (Gaucho struck through with a thick black line) Brown Shirts, passengers disembark at their own risk.”

How pathetic is this? It will do more harm to Argentina than the annoyance it causes the islanders in the long run. The travel firms will soon realise that they are being rather silly in caving in to the bully's and re-instate their programme's. In the meantime, valuable business between the UK and their many close friends will fail from any Argentine firm trying to do business with them. Result = further hardship and huge financial loss for ARGENTINA. What bloody idiots they are, they never learn, will never control the Falklands and will never share in the forthcoming wealth that the islands already enjoy and will simply get better while they get worse off. Britain, did try to negotiate with Argentina early on at the International Court of Justice at the Hague in 1947, 1948, and 1955.
Argentina, however, refused mediation. Argentina does not recognize the Falkland Islands’ right to self-determination, leaving negotiations without a starting point.
What’s Argentina’s problem!!! The Spanish colonists took over two million square kilometres of land from the indigenous peoples of South America to create Argentina and they are desperate to own a group of islands which are over 400 km away from there shores. Argentina should leave the Falkland islanders in peace. They have attacked them twice first time in the sixties and the second time in the eighties. Look at the vast mineral wealth, oil and gas the land they took from the local indigenous peoples contains and the country is facing bankruptcy due to corruption and poor management of resources. The population of Argentina is 85% white (colonists), European decent and 11% indigenous peoples.

I know our Governments policy seems to be to adopt quiet diplomacy, when dealing with Argentinas tactics. However, the time has surely come for stronger action.

Does the UK Government believe that this decision by the tour operators, has resulted from the use of violence and intimidation on the part of Argentina? has most of us on here do.

It is irrelevent that Argentina says it has not orchestrated such a campaign, the fact is it has done nothing to prevent or punish it and has legislation which frankly, provokes it.

At the very least, the UK, should take action on the behalf of the Falkland Islands, they shoulld take it to The Tribuanal for the Law of the Sea, or what ever it's called. Argentina moved pretty damn quick over the Ghana issue, the UK should do the same.

Looks like the boycott is spreading.

Meanwhile,Holland America Line's MS Veendam cancelled a stop at the Falklands due on Friday in July -- not as a result of the protests. (OH YEAH!PULL THE OTHER ONE.)

Both lines are owned by US-based Carnival Corp and were the first big cruise ships due to the islands this summer season.

A Holland America Line spokesperson told the newspaper: “Regarding our scheduled calls to the Falkland Islands, when the weather is good and predictable we go there, when it is not – which is most of the time – we don't.”

Sulivan Shipping in Port Stanley tweeted: “The AIDAcara due to visit on December 3 has cancelled her visit due to the current political situation in Argentina (REFRESHING HONESTY) A huge blow for all involved, let's hope this doesn't continue throughout the season.”

Got to love the Holland America Line, blaming the weather, at least the others have the balls! to tell the truth.

The beaming pride emanating from the words of the Argentine commentators only proves the very real intentions of Argentina. For all the time and effort that they claimed to be the innocent victim and how they have always had the islanders wishes at heart, it is actions like these that show the Argentine people and its government in their true light. They cannot be trusted. They are a law breaking, lying, untrustworthy and spineless nation. How can we begin to negotiate with a nation who treats our livelihoods with such disdain? Why should we give in to threats and blackmail? It only strengthens our resolve and pushes us further away from the negotiating table.

You are only moving further away from your objective, but deep down, I believe this is what Argentina wants. This nation craves to play the victim and it needs someone to hate and vent its anger at. It distracts them from all the unnecessary woes that they have to face in the day-to-day lives in Argentina.

This version of state sponsored terrorism against the Falklands will hurt our wealth, but it will never make us negotiate. So Think, can continue with his insults (call us whatever you want) but you will never be able to call us Argentines. And for the rest of the Argentines can keep rejoicing at their attempts of economic blackmail. Nothing will change.

They long ago ran out of being able to justify any of their attitudes or justifications of rights to the Falklands. Any time they do, they get tied in knots as their basis for ownership is hugely flawed, and they know it.

That's why they are reduced to spouting gibberish on the forums.
Their only means of gaining control of the Falkland Islands is mount another invasion, which considering the state of their armed forces and impounded equipment these days, would amount to having to take a charter flight, or rowing a dinghy over the sea. They could block book a cruise ship, but I suspect that they dont have enough Pesos in the kitty to pay for it.
With Mount Pleasant having a few more troops available than Naval Party 8901 had in '82, I suspect the invasion would last as long as it took to eat a Polo mint.

This is what I call Self-determination working at it’s best.

Ships can self-determinate where they want to be or go.

They can chose to go to FI and avoid Argentina or don’t go to Argentina and go to FI.

May be the directives of the companies make some numbers and then thought...

FI is not a good business like Argentina so we remain Argentinean business partner. Can you see here S-D again.

May be the idiots in the govt. in FI are not managing the economy so well, lack of competence may be?

I guess that Argentina should have to make a referendum among all port workers asking.

A-Do you want Ships go to FI? Yes or no
B-Do you want to remain Argies and ships stop going to FI? Yes or no?
C- Do you want all ships only come to Argentina and salary rise or a salary cut UK style and ship allowed to go to FI? Yes or no.

Let's look at the power hierarchy of argentina:

Nestor - made his money during the evil junta years.
Maximo - Where has the $2billion for Plummet Airlines gone?
KFC - Where has the $520million for the YPF sale in Santa Cruz gone?
Boudou - How are you escaping prison for corruption?
Timmerman - Why are you supporting a political ideology aligned with hitlerism?

Bearing all this in mind, the bullying tactics employed by the SA Brown Shirts seem small fry.

Have they been placed on the WTO naughty step for expropriating private assets? Nope. Have they been put on the G20 naughty step for not actually being in the top 20 economies and being undemocratic? nope.

Even the EU with that very very creepy starey belgian president (forgot his name) seem to be unable to put them on the naughty step and tell Mercosur to get furked, whilst signing deals with Brazil directly. Why is this?

If I were Argentina, I would offer the UK a compromise: Argentina dessist from putting pressure on the cruise lines, tells them univocally they are free to dock in Argentina and then in the Falklands... in exchange the UK instructs their private corporations to hand over assets to Argentine private corporations “voluntarily”.

I am making the figures up, but lets say the cruise industry tourism gets the Falklands 10-15 million a year. Multiply that by 200 (100 years the Falklands are likely to remain a UK territory). Argentina can state this is to offset “loss of resources” from the “Malvinas” (which I wouldn't agree with) or “administrative” costs, in having to check ship from the Faklands for any strange/threateting British activity (something every nation in the world would fully understand the suspicion).

That equals 1-1.5 billion. Have British companis auto-expropriate and we call it a deal. That way the people of the Falklands are not hurt.

If the UK rejects, then Argentina can say the UK gov is siding with a few rich fat cats while not caring about the pocketbooks of 3000 innocent islanders.

@148 So you're basically saying the UK should give in to state sponsored terrorism, and its intimidation of companies? Then they should hand over $1.5 billion dollars in assets to some hitlerists who will immediately offshore the money to the same personal wealth fund as the 'Santa Cruz 520mil'?

That means I will be able to be here the entire day telling the truth in your faces with more and faster updates on:

    - How Europe is guilty of countless crimes against humanity
    - How the UK is the opposite of a human rights, democratically loving society
    - Up to the minute coverage of the daily mass shooting wherever in the USA
    - and much much more...

Don't you love the southern summertime!! And it's finally really warm in the mornings, which gets your blood flowing for some pool time in the hot sunny afternoons... can't really get into the pool if the morning is cool and the water is freezing.

So poolside drinks, sun, and making usufruct of my superior IQ, vocabulary, and noetic-informational skills to put the northern foreign-fiends where they belong on the Humble scale.

Instead you dream of Mendoza, a place where everyone wears kevlar because the local police are booze-addled and can shoot you dead before you can say 'its only a party'.

Don't cops open fire on parties in the USA on a hourly basis? Yes they do. How bad of you not to care for your cousins lives more than for your enemy.

But at least “sh!t” happens at parties. Its at night, its dark, lots of people around, alcohol, drugs, love and hate... hormones... cops... things CAN happen.

Now, being shot dead just because you were walking (alone), on a brightly lit subway station with no one around, no alcohol, no insanity, by the police, now that is the brigh-line of a totalitarian police state.

@202 Now you're simply just an apologist for a totalitarian autocracy. Everyone knows that your country involves 'brown' people being left to starve, while your president and her friends steal away all of your money into 'personal wealth' funds, and your police are just shooting people in the street. Your country has even aligned itself to some of the most odious nations in the world presumably with your agreement.

It's quite clear you're incapable of free thought though, probably because of the programming at primary school.

The only two honorable mentions would be your WWII parry of the German Blitz, at the time the most advanced and powerful military attack force... and the repelling of the Spanish Armada, at the time by far the world's most powerful navy.

Sailing 8,000 miles to counter attack well prepared enemy positions, with air and naval cover, at the odds of 1:3 (Current miltary tactics all say that an assaulting force should have a ratio of 3:1) andcomprensively defeating the enemy. Now that is something impressive in the annals of military history.

Have you ever heard of France or Napoleon ? Their army has always been larger than that of the UK and they were no walkover in any battles.
I think that if you read the history of Britain in India you will discover that the pacifist Hindus were anything but. They also had firearms and cannons - not bronze age weapons.
The Indians had distinct warrior classes -Rajputs and Sikhs.
Again, they had weaponry equivalent to that of the British forces and greater numbers of men. Fighting them was no easy task.

You forgot about the defeat of Napolean as well.

But as has been pointed out, the events of 1982 was quite some going. You even had a navy which, although old, was still quite quite capable of stopping the landings at San Carlos before the ships even entered the MEZ. However, your Navy took one hit and ran home to port.

You outnumbered us in troops and aircraft. You had 3 weeks to dig in. You could even carry on bringing in fresh troops and supplies via C130.

I'd say that 1982 was a very good example of fighting against a FAR larger force.

How “interesting”, in this article, the Brits say the Falklands was a noteworthy victory, yet elsewhere when they “discuss” (traduce) the argentine soldiers and military they say they were badly equipped conscripts with no training, that the argie navy “rows” around, and that the argie air force were a capable in flight and strategy of attack as a summer fruit fly around your face.

But here, they were well equipped soldiers, our navy was a 'threat', etc, etc, etc.

Now that is the definition of “titivating lore” (phrase especially dedicate for Professor Monty).

None of those words, except for perhaps “inverecund”, “moliminous”, “lignify”,and “fructuous” are rare. They are however not often used, and would never be used together like I did in 217.

But if you don't respect the addressee, why would I bother about such things?

And if I were you, at least I would enjoy being exposed to new vocabulary, because I'm sure there had to be at least a couple that were new to you, or at least that you had forgotten for years or decades. Why not take the positive of the experience?

“Now that is something impressive in the annals of military history.”

I would suggest you learn how to read.

And all argie wars have been against larger opposition (the civilian militia of BUenos Aires against the British army batallions, revolutionaries against the Spanish Army, Argentina vs Brazil in the cisplatine war, Argentina vs Paraguay [a larger country then and one that had prepared for war], Argentina vs UK...)

Every country we have waged war against has been larger than us.

And then you have the Crossing of the Andes... over a 3500 meter pass, with horses, cannons, soldiers, equipment, etc... to sneak attack the Spanish in Chile.

That is recognized as one of the greatest military feats of endurance and logistics of all time.

In 1807 the Spanish forces in BA were up against a single British Regiment of the line, comprising 3 infantry battalions and associated units like engineers, a grand total of 1500 men.

The Spanish had a great superiority in numbers and equipment, yet the British still managed to capture BA and hold it for a month and a half. I wouldn’t shout about that one if I were you.

Then there is the war of the triple Alliance, how do you figure Argentina on its own to be smaller than the mighty Paraguay, never mind when combined with Brazil and Uruguay. Missed that one out completely.

Not to forget the “conquest of the desert”, when Argentinian forces fresh from slaughtering Paraguyans, overran Patagonia, despite the Patagonian Indians having overwhelming superiority in men, firepower and technology. Clearly your finest hour.

“One of the greatest military feats of endurance and logistics of all time” Possibly so, I have never heard of it and could find no reference when I checked on Google. I am not saying it did not happen.
Another couple for consideration are D-Day - the logistics for this were staggering and the war could have been lost if it failed.

Is he really trying to compare Argentine military annals with that of the UK or any other half decent 'northern' tribe. He's having a laugh!

    @254

I call bullshit on your claim about the UK v Argentina.

Shall we start by dissecting air power in the Falklands war.

(UK) 28 Sea Harriers and 8 Harrier Gr3, with 5 Black Buck bombing missions comprising of 1 Vulcan per mission.

    (Arg) 74 A-4 Skyhawk, 24 Dagger, 18 MirageIIIE, 5 Super Etendards, 6 Canberra and 114 Pucara, Aermacchi MB339A and T-34C Mentor.

I'm not including the 25 de mayo and her compliment of A4 Skyhawk in this list, nor the helicopter count of the UK forces which comprised mainly of supply/SAR/ASW helos. Very few were equipped for air to air/air to ground combat.

Shall we deconstruct further? I'm sure we will find more examples of numerically superior forces for the Argentine military as we go through each of the forces?

The funniest thing about the British is that they conclude that their IGNORANCE AND TOTAL LACK OF ACTUAL EDUCATION AND CULTURE must equal that something didn't happen or isn't worth mentioning.

Kinda like me saying that they don't teach the 100 years war in Argentina (they don't), it must mean it was a picayune event not worth the mention.

This is what happens when hubris becomes an inveterate trait... they trully can't distinguish the trees from the forest.

    @255

Yes, you defeated the Spanish and who kicked you out? The civilian militia... who did not even consider themselves “Spanish” anymore. And btw, I have no clue where you got that month and half figure... you must be confusing Buenos Aires for Montevideo. You did hold Montevideo for some time, but when you tried to take Buenos Aires, you were routed in 48 hours... not by any proper Spanish troops, by the locals.

    @256

Read the beginning of this post, don't blame your lack of education on us. It is you who is poorly instructed. As I've said the education of the average European is appalling.

I somehow knew you would bring Hannibal and the Alps... do you understand the Alps passes are barely half in elevation compared to the Andes... it is laughable to compare the scale of the Andes and the Alps, both in elevation and sheer difficulty to cut through. The Andes, especially by the Mendoza area (7,000 meter tall mountains), go straight up into the atmosphere.

    @257

    I am loving this...

This is like when the churchmen told Galileo “I see the sun going up over us and back down... so you are wrong! The sun goes around the Earth”. They conclude their ignorance of the reality must mean that the reality is their ignorance.

Bless you all, you keep proving my points about the anglo-saxon, and European in general, IQ and level of general culture. The scariest part is that you are geniuses next to the Americans.

What is immediately apparent though is your self proclaimed intellect aka cognitive arrogance, which is first rate...that cannot be said of your military however! Your summation of your military prowess can only be summed up in the main as a series of inconsequential skirmishes. Having first hand experience of being engaged with your native breed in a conflict scenario I would also say that you haven't much to be proud about. Apart from your pilots, who were skilled and brave men, you seem to excel at loosing battles, retreating and sublime incompetency. Rather interesting this Anglo-Argentine digital pissing competition...I mean are you really that arrogant that you can iconise your country above any other let alone one that came half way round the world to turf your poor excuse of a military off our beloved oil rich islands. @reality check & andy65

I guess you both read a lot of propaganda tabloid from British trash media.

According with Arg. documentaries The Junta was already falling and was close to be kicked out before the FW started. Galtieri as a last attempt to gain some time invaded the islands without much planning.

As you can see the Argentine militaries were more afraid of the Argies at home than to start a war with OTAN.

From my point of view Argentine militaries help more Britain Army and the Islanders than any govt. from UK.

1-After the war the islanders gain more freedom and political status together with economic gain and British citizenship.

2-The UK military power was close to be downsized to half by Margaret Thatcher before the war so was in part saved by the Argie Junta.

3-According with your own words FI is part of UK so technically Argentina invaded Britain and got away with it. Because you little cowards didn’t have the guts to declare war to Argentina because you knew that you will be destroyed as your own record shows loosing 4 times in invasions attempts in Argies coasts.

4- To put in perspective how bad was the FI war for British Military a little statistic would help a lot.

The bad and no trained Arg civilian soldiers killed in 74 days more than 268 British soldiers (recognised by UK because seems to be more, according with uk owns military source) an average of 3.5 soldier per day.

While in Afghanistan after 11 years war were killed jut 438 British soldiers (according with BBC) what provides an average of 0,17 soldier per day.

So a 11 years conflict with Argentina at that rate will give a figure of 14.052,5 Mohammeds that will not see the sun again. And a in a conflict on mainland you will have to multiply that figure by 5 to be conservative because even grannies of 80 years old will shoot you from their balconies. Ha ha

I am privileged to have the benefit of the thoughts of Argentina's most respected historian and would humbly give you my thoughts on your posting.
Yes,I could see from the newsreels at the time that everyone hated the military regime. People were shouting“ down with the Junta.”
3 We did not take it as a declaration of war, just a jumped up load of Hispanics trying it on.
Why should we invade Argentina - pointless but of course macho gestures rule your thoughts.
If it had been really serious, we could have reduced your country
to an ash tip, however, unlike you, we are a civilized peaceful nation. Tolerant of less fortunate of God's creatures.

Your “soldiers” did not kill 268 British soldiers, your air force accounted for most of our casualties.
Your “soldiers” were in most cases in fortified bunker positions.
Our “cowardly” troops had to come out in the open and attack which requires more guts than hiding. Your casualties could have been much more if our troops had been ordered not to fire on your people as they were scarpering back to Stanley after losing every battle in the mountains.
As to your 200 year old triumph in defeating British forces in a minor incident that would not be indicative of the current situation.
We have no desire or reason to “attack” your country by landing any forces on it. We could not do it.
As far as we are concerned, you are an annoying country at the bottom of the world whose government are hell bent on your ruin.
If that is your wish, so be it. I have no animosity towards the Argentinian people, they have enough on their plate.
I am always faintly amused at how recent immigrants to a country take credit for its past deeds when most probably their antecedents were still in the hated Europe.

Duny burger... Another inspired breakthrough in intellectual reasoning... Multiply the average casualties per day , times the British casualties average per day in Falklands and using the Afghanistan casualties do a comparison.

I Think this may have a few holes in as a theory. 70,000 casualties in one day in the battle of the Somme, 1 day vs much much lower casualties in WW2 , were the Germans hyper effective in WW1??? Or perhaps , and shoot me down on this one..every conflict is different. a seaborn invasion against a well defended numerically superior force would expect reasonable high casualties, whereas a long drawn out counter insurgency say for instance in Afghanistan would by the nature of the conflict produce a much lower toll per day of casualties.

Good try, bet you wished you went to school now don't you, they teach you stuff jajajajaja

    @268 - Dany

Once again you show your ignorance of military tactics and history.

As Santa Fe and Clyde15 have already alluded to, every military engagement is different, and has to be approached differently.

The Falklands War taught the WHOLE worlds militaries one important lesson. That is to have complete air superiority over your enemy, a lesson that was learned the hard way by the Royal Navy.

Which is why in recent conflicts the air defences are the 1st targets to be hit.

If the situation ever happened again, and Argentina somehow invaded the Falklands, the 1st thing the UK would do is bomb the sh!t out of your airforce and navy bases on the MAINLAND of Argentina. We would take out your anti-aircraft defences etc...

Then we would waltz into the Falklands and kick your sorry arses back to Argentina.

As for the 'declaring' war on Britain by invading the Falklands. Yes you did. But the mission for the UK was to remove the murderous Argentine invaders from our turf. The mission was successful.

Just what would've been gained by the UK invading Argentina? Nothing. Quite frankly you Argentinians seem to constantly get what you deserve, one corrupt government after another.

I will agree that the Falklands Invasion did change the mind of the Government about downsizing the RN, but winning the Falklands War showed the world that the UK was still a force to be reckoned with, and still is today.

We are one of the few countries in the world that can 'project' our military power beyond our own borders, when the need arises.

Argentina's attempt at projecting power beyond Argentina appears to have been impounded for non-payment of debts, or have broken down awaiting parts: which won't be supplied until your government pays for them upfront.

How embarrassing for the people of Argentina, and your military, to have such incompetent people running your country.

Well I didn't want to be brutally honest but if I must:

You “won” the German Blitz of Britain both because of Hitler's idiocy in changing tactics (had he stuck his guns to military targets and not wasted it in other areas), you would have been surely conquered (and faster yet had the USA not been lending you guns and Argentina supplying you food).

And the Armanda we all know that it wasn't the British navy that defeated the Spanish Army, it was a weather event that crippled the fleet. Had that not ocurred, you would have been comprehensibly defeated and Spain's flag would have flow in London, and you would have had a new King/Queen.

And of course the Italians conquered you as did the French/Normans, and the Scandinavians/Vikings.

You did win, as you pointed out, a minor skirmish against Argentina who's Navy stayed in port, whose army didn't participate but for some conscripts, and whose air force compared to yourse was fighting with one hand tied (in terms of technology and ammunition).

And your victories against Bronze Age tribes of course.

You wanna play the humiliation game? What I said is completely true when we take the folkloric embellishments that any nation gives to their battles.

The above is the true history of British military achievement.

    @277

I'll call bullshit on that statement too.

Let us start with The Battle of Britain.

Although it was an error to change to bombing civilian instead of military targets, the Luftwaffe were not hitting as many airfields as they thought.

Lots of aircraft were never kept at the airfield, instead laying up several miles away. eg RAF North Weald had a second airfield, discreetly hidden, near what is now a town( formerly a village in 1940) called Harlow. So bombing the airfields was not putting as many out of action as Goerring was led to believe. Many temporary ''airfields'' were set up as well to use as a distraction and divert Luftwaffe bombers to bomb empty fields.
Production of aircraft was more than keeping pace with losses.

The end result, even if they had stuck to bombing RAF airfields, would have been EXACTLY the same.

Had the High command realised what all those funny looking towers were, and how effective Radar was, they would have blown all them to bits instead, because it was radar that stopped us having to have as many planes to be effective. We simply didn't need to mount CAP patrols, thereby reducing the amount of aircraft needed, and giving more time to service and re arm them.

On a further point, the United States did not lend us anything, we paid for them, albeit on a long term deal which we finished paying rather recently.

Shall we deconstruct your other false assumptions in that post?

    Factual inaccuracies again.
There was NO British navy at the time of the Armada - not ARMANDA ! It was the English navy to whom the honour falls.
Whether the Spaniards could have disembarked their troops is a matter of conjecture.

The Romans partially conquered Britain but failed in the North.
They won some battles but not the war. Hadrian had to have a wall built to keep the Picts out. The 9th Legion was sent in to subdue the population and never came back out.

The Normans etc conquered YOU. Who do you think the British are ? We are a mongrel nation made up of Celts, Britons, Norse Angles,Saxons, Jutes and various other ethnic groups who immigrated here over the centuries.

The Argentine navy did not stay in port. They came out to mount a pincer attack on the British fleet and after the Belgrano was sunk, they turned tail and steamed back to port.

Your Army in the Falklands was made up of conscripts ?
I think the men of the 5th Marine Inf. Bat. /Ist Marine Artillery bat. and HQ heavy machine gun co. would take issue over that statement. These were supposed to be some of the best trained and toughest troops in the Argentinian Army.

The ARGENTINIAN AIR FORCE - do you exclude the Naval element ?
Equipped with Super Etandards and Mirage fighters - hardly down market equipment.
Our aircraft were fighting against an enemy who had superior numbers, the advantage of home ground airfields and airborne AEW in the form of Grumman Trackers. As to ammunition, I have no idea of the extent of your resources but ours had to be hauled 8000 miles across the ocean and kept aboard ships under attack.

Victories against bronze age tribes ?Who were they?
The French? The Indians ? Malays ?

What you said is not completely true but your version of the truth twisted to fit your prejudices.

    And.....:
    ”Not People but people…….

    But not a People.
    No Sir.
    Not a People……”

No wonder that a Turnip like you can’t understand even his own language......:

”people” as in : ”Individual persons”…..

    What a Turnip!

    2) About my position about Argentinean recent history.......
I have made my position about the Argentinean Armed Farces very, very clear in discussions with South American Fascists on this very pages.

    Think

You obviously don't understand the term “Walt” for all your bluster.

    You misrepresent at every opportunity.

A Walt is someone that tells everyone they were in the Armed Forces, when they weren't, and try to make people believe that they are something that they are not in the hope of gaining some respect.

An example ofthis is Doveoverdover who erroneously claims to be ex-Royal Navy, and now he's telling everyone he's worked in the diplomatic corps too.

    That is a Walt.

However, you don't have to be a military person to understand military tactics, but if you are military it gives you a unique understanding of what is or is not possible.

For instance, DanyBerger, thinks that the way to win a war is to throw large numbers of troops at the enemy. This type of tactic was tried in WW1 with tragic results for all parties. He also has no understanding of the logistics involved in supplying an army, and keeping it supplied until the objective is complete.

For instance, in the Falklands War, the British supply line was 8,000 miles. Because of this distance, every military expert in the world said that the British mission would fail. There was no way they could keep the troops supplied.

Argentina's supply line was only 400 miles long.

Yet it was the Argentine troops that were the ones who were not supplied, even though there were huge amounts of stores on the Falkland Islands at the time.

Because of that morale and fighting efficiency suffered, and the Argentine troops couldn't hold out against the British onslaught.

Now the British troops were resupplied, and despite having to walk across the Islands, fighting every step of the way their morale and fighting efficiency didn't wane, and they achieved their objective.

Perhaps you should try reading more, broaden your mind, and try putting forwards reasoned arguments instead of insulting people.

You may even gain a little respect from people if you did that.

If you had access to the UN telephone directory (or the NATO, EU, or OSCE for that matter) you would be able to see that the UK Delegations at each of these august bodies have MOD, both serving and civil service, personnel attached to them as advisers and desk officers. If you had any vision beyond the back of the man in the rank in front of you you would have known that officers in their latter years get all sorts of interesting postings. I was one of them and therefore cannot be outed.

The forces in Afghanistan are trying to get out and leave the country in a state of democracy. You seem to have a special insight into the political ramifications of the ”popular”Taliban taking the country back into the middle ages. Yes, the Afghans want the forces out but they do not want the Taliban back.

This has nothing to do with a non-confrontation with a NATO ally.
Spain is raising the Gibraltar issue BECAUSE of internal matters with Catalonia, where their is a strong movement for independence

Our military will strengthen with the return of our forces from Afghanistan. More troops to garrison our overseas territories such as the Falklands and adjacent islands.

    Here's an update.

On 30th November the Seabourn Sojurn (a British registered cruise liner) was ORDERED not to enter Falklands territorial waters by the Argentine coastguard.

The ships' captain ignored them and proceeded to Stanley. This represents an escalation of Argentine hostility towards the UK and the Falklanders.

Apparently the FO is complaining about this incident. I hope that next time they try this the RN guardship or RAF QRA flight are despatched to remind the Argentine vessel reponsible for such an order that they can't stop vessels going wherever they choose on an arbitary basis.

“Think” loves to try to play the moral high ground, but on this issue Argentina has none. It is clearly the agressor, as it was in 1982.

Like the rest of the Malvinistas he hates the fact that they lost in 1982 and were prevented from forcibly evicting the Falklanders from their homes at gunpoint (which was the whole point of the invasion when it comes down to it).

Argentina was able to defeat us, but snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by poor choices in strategy, tactics and timing.

He loves to try and dredge up the darker moments of UK history - fine lets go there again shall we “think”......

Don't forget Argentina has it's own share of skeletons in the cupboard....

So your bringing up the origin of my user name again.

I believe the last time you did that was on the thread about Argentina whining to the UNSC about the Falkland Islands and Britain 'militarising' the South Atlantic.

I put some well researched comments forwards, and you mocked me, then mocked my user name.

Then all my comment were proved true, and you went VERY quiet.

You don't like being wrong, do you think? You see you believe (erroneously) that you can never be wrong, so when you are proved wrong you act like a child and sulk. This is how you 'think'. “I am right, therefore everyone else is wrong.” Someone produces evidence that you are wrong. You ignore it because you 'think' that “I am right, therefore everyone else is wrong.”

You, like many Malvinistas on here, are a fanatic.

By the way, I never said DoD wasn't British because he liked apple pie, HE said he was as British as apple pie, which is incorrect. It is American's who use the apple pie anology, not the British.

You see DoD is an Argentine troll, and I'll give him credit for being more intelligent than the average troll.

BUT he makes mistakes that no native born and bred British person would.

By the way, yes I do put my point of view forwards, just like you do. But I research the facts behind my point of view before posting.

You just regurgitate the same old stuff, and when that doesn't work you start insulting people.

Out of the two of us, that would certainly make you the one with the childish mind.

Argentine will NEVER get the Falkland Islands unless the PEOPLE of the Falklands wish to become a part of Argentina.

Argentina is the aggressor, the would be coloniser, the dictator and the attempted murderer here.

You may get some of your sicophant 'friends' to mouth empty platitudes to you, but the rest of the world can see right through you.

Every year that goes by weakens even the erroneous claims to the Falklands that Argentina has made, whereas every year that goes by strengthens the position of the Falkland Islanders.

In fact the Falkland Islanders are now fighting Argentina's blatant LIES with the truth, and everyone can see that.

That is why you and your La Campora 'chums' are so desperate to try and rubbish anything said by the FIG, and try to pretend that the Universal Declaration on Human Rights somehow didn't include the people of the Falklands.

You are more and more desperate, and the world laughs at your pathetic government as they humilate your country time after time.

It won't be long now, Think, before the fate of the Libertad is known. My opinion is that it won't be a happy ending for Argentina. :)

Why do you northern European losers come to Argentina for your “princess”? That Michel Bubble, The king of the Dutch, Matt Damon, Al Pacino... Ever heard of a rich argie going after a male looking northern Euroopean castrati? Hmmm... no.

Shit, didn't even a US senator travel 10000 kilometers to secretly date a HORRIBLE argie woman, that probably never dated in her life? And he even lied he said he was going for a “bike ride” in the mountains. HAHAHAHAHA.

I have no clue who the Dutchess of Cambridge is, but have you taken an ogle at that Camilla? LOL, she represents you in “every” way. :)

Argentina the only country that could harbour Nazis then elect a jew to be your forieghn affairs minister how tactful.
May I also remind you that it is impossible for us to elect any minority from being president as we have a constitutional monarchy with an elected governmant and prime minister WE ARE NOT A REPUBLIC.

LONDON, Oct. 26— Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher told the House of Commons today that the Falkland war against Argentina cost Britain about $1.19 billion.

Answering a Commons question, Mrs. Thatcher said, ''the cost to the defense budget up to the end of September was an estimated 700 million,'' or $1.19 billion.

said the representative of the area in FM Masters there are a number of important issues that were affecting the sector, such as inflation, currency exchange, prohibition of mooring British flagged vessels, and falling imports.
“We are poor and we are on track to be worse.”, “it is not that we do not have much profit, but we are taking losses.”

“The Argentines do not understand that the British electorate truly and deeply do not want to be involved in South American wars but are damned if they will tolerate naked aggression against their kinsmen. ”Here is the full passage (Step by Step, 1947 edition, 158). Draw your own conclusions:

To feel deep concern about the armed power of Germany is in no way derogatory to Germany. On the contrary, it is a tribute to the wonderful and terrible strength which Germany exerted in the Great War, when almost single-handed she fought nearly all the world and nearly beat them. Naturally, when a people who have shown such magnificent military qualities are arming night and day, its neighbours, who bear the scars of previous conflicts, must be anxious and ought to be vigilant. One may dislike Hitler’s system and yet admire his patriotic achievement. If our country were defeated I hope we should find a champion as indomitable to restore our courage and lead us back to our place among the nations. I have on more than one occasion made my appeal in public that the Führer of Germany should now become the Hitler of peace.

All of which shows yet again that you can use Churchill’s words, vacuumed like a gigantic Hoover and offered without ellipses by the faithful Martin Gilbert, to prove anything. You only have to preselect and edit the right ones. —RML ”

Should be easy enough to understand .............. even for a turnip of your caliber....
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whats wrong with my quote? asks turnip (376)
Well..... besides it being “Taken out of Context”, “Undated” and ”Copied and Pasted” with biased intentions.......it is ok.

Lets add some context and date it .....shall we?.....:

”In 1938 Perón was sent to many countries of Europe, to study them. At his return, he would explain that he had a positive impression about national syndicalism during the government of Benito Mussolini in Italy and Adolf Hitler in Germany. By that year, he thought that those countries would become Social Democracies.

His exact words were as follows:
Italian Fascism led popular organizations to an effective participation in national life, which had always been denied to the people. Before Mussolini's rise to power, the nation was on one hand and the worker on the other, and the latter had no involvement in the former. In Germany happened exactly the same phenomenon, meaning, an organized state for a perfectly ordered community, for a perfectly ordered population as well: a community where the state was the tool of the nation, whose representation was, under my view, effective. I thought that this should be the future political form, meaning, the true people's democracy, the true social democracy. — Juan Perón.

After the end of World War II and the rise of Perón to a popular leader, antiperonist politicians and authors would point that Perón once manifested support for Mussolini and Hitler, implying that such support involved the whole of their governments or the paths actually taken by Italy or Germany after 1938......

    You catch my drift now?
