Mercosur leading members Brazil and Argentina are closely following the Venezuelan situation confident there are no reasons for surprises or fears about the democratic system, while the most respected political reporter of the country Nelson Bocaranda assures that President Cristina Fernandez, CFK, paid a secret visit to Havana in December where she talked with Hugo Chavez about his true health condition. Ok, other than laughing at Britworker (thanks for that)!

Of course Venezuela will has a future without Chavez. The ego of some politicians is amazing.

Unfortunately for the Venezuelan people, it would seem the leader of a foreign country (CFK) is more important than they are.

After all, the Venezuelan people have a right to know what is happening with their leader and he still won't tell them a thing. And never has disclosed his condition. It has always been healthy and fine when he does. There is an ominous silence from the government OF THE PEOPLE of Venezuela at the moment.

As for democracy (or what passess for it in Venezuela as elections don't make a country democratic), the constitution that Chavez created is quite clear on what happens when a president is permanently incapacitated.

Will they follow the word or spirit of the constitution? Seems Paraguay is already a precedent for countries that don't follow the spirit of a constitution even when following the word.

Does anyone else see a double standard coming?

I totally agree Anglotino. I fail to see how they've gone so long without keeping the public informed. It's not like they do not know the stories ending. That last paragraph of the article had me busting a gut....finally accepted as a full member.....yeah, after Mercosur had a coupe against Paraguay to get venezula in. Perhaps they will do what all dictators do......change the constitution to fit the governments needs at the moment.

While January 10th might seem important, it is January 5th that we need to watch. This is the day the Venezuelan National Assembly will elect a new Assembly President.

The incumbent Diosdado Cabello will probably be reelected. However he is considered a rival to Vice President Maduro.

As it is the Assembly President that will take power should Chavez die before his inauguration (to organise new elections), any change in the chance of Cabello being reelected would give a good indicator of any power play for the “throne”.

You know it is crumbling for the saggy old bitch when she has to sneak out of the country for fear of being deposed in her absence :)

@5 surely you mean Warlock? Interesting fact: Warlocks traditionally ride pitch-forks and not broom-sticks. Therefore harry potter rides like a girl.

Venezuela is a pseudo-communist crypto-fascist corrupt sh!t hole now, and rest assured, it'll still be one after Jan 5th.

Really? CFKC snuck out of the country to visit Chavez in Cuba? What for? To collect cash for her 'change the constitution campaign'? Or was it purely a private visit? If it was I sincerely hope she has paid for it, not the Argentine tax-payers.

I doubt this news story because she is too sick to travel, remember? And I cannot believe any credible President would need to sneak about visiting another President.

Not to mention the fact that the leader of the country is not only out of the country, but but totally incapcitated and limited powers given to the VP. What a transparent democracy.

This show of solidarity, friendship and comradeship from Cristina to Chavez is truly heartwarming and sweet. I hope both live long and happy lives, including at least one more full term in office for each of them. They deserve it and the world needs more leaders like them. That people on here are trying to make it a scandal or a joke that she visited her friend in hospital just shows the low level of the haters...
