If at the coming referendum, the Falkland Islands wish to remain a UK Overseas Territory, retaining the current status and preserving the right to self-determination, which would allow the Falkland Islands to review its status at any time, “this could include full independence in the future”, points out the booklet “On the future of the Falkland Islands”. Argentina honours its debts and is the land of the brave.
I see that Union Jack is still flying proudly over the Falkland Islands and the UK's other extensive South Atlantic territories and maritime space.
Can't see that changing anytime soon.
If they want independence then it is theirs to have. UK will offer them any help they need and wish them good luck.

UN C24 committee. Just what is the purpose of this farcical assembly? They blether and blether but do they have any practical solutions as to how decolonization should be carried out? Lets look at five cases. I wont go into the Falklands case as it has been discussed ad infinitum on these threads
Jan 18th, 2013 - 04:55 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Pitcairn Island (pop 49) No original inhabitants and settled by the Bounty mutineers. What does the C24 suggest? Independence? They would be hard pushed to form a football team, much less a fully fledged independent govt. So C24 what are your ideas?
Tristan da Cunha (pop 269) Again no aborigine population. In 1961 the entire popaltion was evacuated to UK following a volcanic eruption. They were very unhappy in UK and voted to return to thier island home and to hell with the volcano
Ascension Island (pop 873), most of whom are transient. A barren rock in mid Atlantic which subsists because of Wideawake airfield
St Helena (pop 6,600) A BOT with an elected parliamentary assembly which has delegated certain matters to the Uk govt but which can declare thier independence should they so wish
The Falklands No aboriginal inhabitants and a duly elected parliament to manage thier own affairs. Need I go on?
As for the uninhabited islands such as South Georgia (btw Marcos slipped up there didnt you? Its called something else in Spanish) Argentina has as much claim to it as the Mexicans do to the French Clipperton Island
So can anyone tell me what is the C24 practical solution to the decolonization of these so called colonies?
I opponent, nor will I ever vote to Peronism, you can say what you want about cristina, may we express our opinion the same. The problem is not her, but all Argentines! Jan 18th, 2013 - 08:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It is really sad that so many Argentinians have allowed themselves to become duped by propaganda and lies that have been spread by successive Argentine governments on the subject of the Falklands. The Falkland Islands ARE NOT Argentinian. Argentina DOES NOT HAVE A VALID CLAIM. The Falkland Islanders DO HAVE THE RIGHT to self determination. Get over it.
Jan 18th, 2013 - 08:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@10, the problem with C24 is that their list has stabilized towards those territories that want the status quo at present. They cannot be practically integrated into their sponsor state, are not yet ready to go independent and/or have inhabitants who are rabidly opposed to be forcibly colonized or annexed by an immediate neighbor who sees the inhabitant as enemies to be oppressed and ethnically cleansed and would impose an unwelcome authoritarian colonizing overlord (i.e, Argentina) and handing them over would like giving the Czechoslovakia to the Nazis.
Jan 18th, 2013 - 08:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Of course for C24, it's not a problem, it's a feature. With the mutually agreeable equilibrium between the territories and their sponsor state, they can continue to claim a purpose, reject the local's right to self-determination, and even self-represetnation in the C24 and continue the arrogant role as Big Blue Father.

Jan 18th, 2013 - 09:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The whole criteria is up the pole. The Dutch terretories in the Carribean for instance. Then there is French Guiana an overseas department of mainland France. They were given the oppotunity to vote on their future staus but elected to stay as they were
Bit like the FI situation really So why arent there terretories on the C24 hitlist? Beats me. Anybody care to explain?
@31, one answer that should be obvious is that, ironically, Argentina's open ambitions to colonize and oppress the islanders give C24 some publicity, especially as they can define the conflict as white people against. well.. white people. Yes, that makes sense.

Jan 18th, 2013 - 11:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But it's easy, I propose now claim for Argentina the present territory of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and also carry out the amendment of the Constitution Argentina in this regard. So respectful and democratic, as the British, would call the 60 million Britons a referendum given to Argentina's claim to decide whether to continue with its current political situation YES or NO and if NO what other alternatives would like.
Again, what twisted mentality with these pirates.
They say to give the appearance of legitimacy, will present the results to the United Nations, but one wonders with what face? I suppose that the presentation would go to file Malvinas / Falklands along with more than 40 resolutions calling itself the negotiations, as further evidence of unresolved conflict of sovereignty between Britain and the Republic Argentina.

Jan 19th, 2013 - 09:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0In fact to save time, you could just provide a copy of any resolution that says Britain is supposed to negotiate the transfer of sovereignity over the Falklands to Argentina.
If you can't manage that, you could try a copy of any resolution that says there have to be negotiations specifically on sovereignity, that the islanders are to be excluded from any such negotiations, and that the principle of sovereignity doesn't apply.
And failing that, try a copy of any UN resolution that states Britain is in breach of any UN resolution.
If you get stuck in your reading, try asking Ban-ki Moon, I'm sure he'll set you straight.

The recovery of said territories and the full exercise of sovereignty, respectful of the way of life of their inhabitants.
Jan 19th, 2013 - 10:59 am - Link - Report abuse 0This will be 'respect' counter model style, similar to the way Warsaw and polish culture was treated circa 1944. Particularly if fat max is put in charge.
We only have to look at the c24 meet for evidence; CFK and timerman treated the falkland island delegation with utter contempt. They had the opportunity to show grace and statesmanship, which might even have helped their case, but they aren't capable of that. So reverted to arrogant ignorance, which they excel at.
It should give no one any satistfaction that Argentina is in Deep Manure; the future must envisage a cooperative one with an entirely different government.
Jan 19th, 2013 - 11:28 am - Link - Report abuse 0Look at the map.It is a matter of geography as well as soveriegnty...Falkands myst have self-determination, and Argentina as well as South America must change or remain 19/20th Century thinkers in a very rapidly changing climatic ,as well as political world. @45 well thanks for that, but it does give me satisfaction to see rgenweener in deep manure, why? because they keep on trying to make peoples lives misery, whilst they should be sorting thier own shit out, once old turkey neck has gone and a sensible goverment is in force that ceases all the rhetoric and crap then I might change my opinion until then fraid not.

@47, Uh Shed..
Jan 19th, 2013 - 04:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The UK is in violation of NO UN resolutions, BKM said so explicitly and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that it is AR that is in breach of the only resolution that matters and their actions in 82 nullified any prior non-binindgs and indeed any vestige of a moral claim on the FI by AR (just as DEU has no moral or any other claim on East Prussia). And I don't understand what what you would assume that I think otherwise. The only reason I'd like to see direct talks would be to see AR be told directly across a table by the FIG (not a London rep from the UK) to take their colonial aspirations and shove it and since AR won't even acknowledge them. Sadly, I will be eternally frustrated in that respect, because the look on the AR delegation faces when the UK transferred the floor to the FIG would be comedy gold.
Any cursory review of my comments would make my stance on that clear, I'd think.
@2 Once upon a time there were some Spanish people who got in a boat and sailed for thousands of miles. When they got to wherever they murdered all the local people and decided to stay. Now they want to do it again. One of their complaints about the people who live where they want to go is that they are an implanted population. They deny being an implanted population themselves. There you go. Not one joke, but two!
Jan 19th, 2013 - 04:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@7 No. Independence is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over the territory. Andorra, Costa Rica, Grenada, Kiribati, Liechstenstein, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vatican City are all independent. None have an army!
@18 Stop using Google translate. It's making you look more stupid than you are naturally.
@19 Go ahead. No concern of ours. But bear in mind that you have to have an army. Javi says so!
@21 Please try using the mind that you don't have.
@22 Prick!
@30 Are you sure? I thought they were just there for the extra foreign holidays at someone else's expense.
@36 Remember the Picton, Lennox and Nueva islands. Three other islands that arsieland tried to steal. Remember all the incidents, the arbitration decision that arsieland rejected, the direct negotiations, the attempt to occupy the islands, the papal mediation, the Falklands War? And the result? The islands belong to Chile. I don't know of anybody born in Malvinas Islands. They are a fantasy, a myth. But I AM British. Figure it out.
@38 Keyboard stuck again? A common problem with a NEW solution. Place it in the middle of the road. Go back for it next week.
@45 Why? What's wrong with arsieland imploding? There was a time when Buenos Aires thought it could be a country all by itself. Let's replace arsieland with 23 smaller countries?

ALEX - you are clearly showing that you are a RACIST again, and ANTI-SEMITIC, as well.
Do you READ AND UNDERSTAND history and world events?
Are you referring to the PALESTINIAN EXODUS?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Palestinian_exodus
The Palestinians were only angry at the British because they withdrew after losing many British lives to Israeli terrorist attacks. The British were in fact, trying to protect the Palestinians from Israeli incursions into the Arab section of Palestine, as partitioned by the UN.
The UN, the same body that CFK demands hand over The Falklands to Argentina.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Palestinian_exodus
Now, you would have the British miltary withdraw from The Falklands, a forced exodus of the current inhabitants, a self-governing culture and people who have lived there for nearly 200 years and going back many generations, to make room for 'settlers' who have no legal claim to the territory??
Is that the example you wanted to make?
You are a racist puppet of the CFK foreign aggressors.

I confidently predict that in 2182 La guerre Las Malvinas, will have in their history books, morphed into a glorious Argentinian victory and the 2nd of April, will be a national holiday. The Falklanders have the world at their feet. They have a growing economy, a precious natural resource, lots of space in which to expand their population, an astonishingly low crime rate and boundless possibilities. They have the right to become independent at any time. Their only real problem is some annoying country named Argentina with a corrupt government, failing economy and ragged military who want to establish a dictatorship on the islands. I really wish that Kirchner would leave the Falklanders alone so they can push on and become a fully fledged new nation.

Most countries in the world being members of the Group of 77 and similar third would despots who hate Britain and sympathise with Argentine. Most people in Latin America believe the Falklands are the Malvinas and are populated by Latin American's like themselves who speak Spanish and are held against their will in a colonial throw back, while Latin American governments are locked into supporting Argentina's claims to the Falklands.
Jan 22nd, 2013 - 02:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Just as Ossetia's independence is not recognised by any country outside of Russia. Don't expect the Falklands will be recognised by many.
It would also piss off 99% of the British population who have paid in Gold and Blood to keep the islands free. If the Falklands wanted further support they would be unlikely to get it after opting for what would be unrecognised independence.
The Falklands need Britain and Britain needs the Falklands, like it or not that is the reality. It's time to work with it.
