A summer brawl has surfaced in Buenos Aires between the car washers’ industry and the Argentine Meteorological service that are blamed for their poor forecasts which scares customers from the outlets. Read full article
So, the Argentines suggest what? Get the uneducated La Campora folks to force the meteorologists to say every day is a sunny day just so they get more business? Next thing, they'll be getting La Campora to fly their planes.
Always someone else's fault now even the weather forecasters are to blame. Maybe the UK could send the one of their top weathermen. Say, Michael Fish?
One would imagine that, if it's starting to get a little tougher to make ends meet, paying someone to wash your car might be an early casualty a cost-cutting exercise. However if the car wash unions really think the forecasts are to blame they could always canvass to have INDEC take over the role. That way they could be sure that the number of forecast rainy days would be cut by at least two thirds.
BTW, Argentina can have Michael Fish. I met him in the Falklands once and he is a right dick.
I wouldn't be surprised if the car wash union's membership list has got a lot in common with the membership lists of the paid thug organisations that CFK bankrolls. Or should I say is struggling to afford to bankroll. She's going to have a big problem with that as the money continues to dry up. Like owning a pack of hyenas. As long as you keep feeding them they'll spare you but you'd better get out of there fast if you run out of food.
I don't think Argentina has its own weather satellites. They probably just use forecasts from USA services like The Weather Channel, or Accuweather etc. and pass on the info.
If there were any good forecasters which is pretty big business here they've most likely are working outside of the country. I have a friend who does weather forecasting/modelling for a commodities broker and makes a fortune!
This issue with the weathermen is not a national Argentine issue, it's clearly a global issue that needs to be discussed at the highest priority within the OAS, Mercosur and random asian states. A letter will be sent to Ban Ki Moon immediately, and has nothing to do with laziness and cr@p marketing.
Is the Argentine Car-washer's Union a euphemism for something else?
In fairness, Chambers of Commerces in the US have been infamous about harping on about missed rain/snow forecasts, and I s'spect it's true for every country. But the direct causation between a rainy forecast (when it's sunny right now) and people going to the store is dodgy (unless they have to drive for miles and miles to get to the store and people don't drive 50-100 mi to the carwash). Unless you literally live in the middle of nowhere, every shopper is a Household Weather Service of One and our model of choice is called a window. Plus everyone knows that the best way to make it rain is to wash your car so in this case, the charge is beyond frivolous.
But most importantly weather services and met offices exist to save lives and protect properties by promptly issuing watches and warnings. They are more interested in NOT missing severe storm and flooding events (ahem... such as those that have hit BA) rather than putting happy pictures of sunshine or whatever on their public forecast web pages so people who don't look out windows will go shopping. In such a formula, it's ok and forgeable to forecast sprinkles for what is really a perfect picnic day.
I must admit I was fed up with the efforts of the UYU Met Office and have used the Norwegian website shown below for the last 18 / 20 months with much better accuracy.
You can specify your town or local area and there are local, moving weather maps over a two or three day period.
I also use the site to keep an eye on my extended families weather situation in the UK.
Car Wash Foreman:
We have a problem with the new employee.
Supervisor:
What's the matter? He did great in the interview, used lots of words even I never heard before!
Foreman:
Well, half the time he's next door at the Internet Café, and the other half he spends arguing with all the 'real' workers. And besides, he has no idea how to wash cars!
Supervisor:
That's ok. He's my wife's nephew, he lives with his parents in a 'settlement' and we just pay him in Internet Minutes next door.
I really need to find a piece of 80s footage that has a US weathercaster using a blue screen under a raincoat complete with newspaper in the pocket and having to reach inappropriately under the beltline to get down to Florida.
But for now, I must defer to someone who never wanted to do a weather forecast to begin with.
As a retired emergency services worker, I can tell you that the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (National Weather Service) here in Argentina is excepcionally good at its job, they have given us spot forecasts for wild fires in the middle of nowhere which have been 99% correct over a 12 hour period. Anyone in the fire services will tell you that this is very good indeed!!!!!

I wonder, is the Argentine met office really that bad?
I have to laugh at the idea of a Car Wash Union. I mean, seriously?!

Surely Argentines can do what everyone else does; look out of the window to see the weather.
Jan 19th, 2013 - 12:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I would say it is far more likely that people are cutting back on luxuries, as has been said.
Yes, I look out the window and check the weather satellite map myself.
