@10, I agree that is bad form. But as for her statement blaming Timmerman? That's even worse. She needed to just say that she put her foot in her mouth, without throwing him under the bus. She can yell at him *behind closed doors* all she wants (and, yes, maybe she should), but outwardly she should graciously apologize for what came out of her own mouth, and Sang would have graciously accepted it with no worries. This was a minor gaffe that she unnecessarily made much worse.

With reference to the supposed demonization of Argentines on here, this is not 100% true.
It is correct to assume there are a few nutters on here that would gladly cause holocaust but many others just wish for a balanced relationship with Argentines and Argentina in general. Isolationist policies practiced by CFK and her devoted followers do not make good friends, no matter what bad blood has occurred in the past. There are plenty here on ''our side'' that have both visited, lived and know Argentina for the country it is and could be. It would appear more positive than what is generally posted here.
Maybe, just maybe, if the isolationism that ferments currently could be turned into something a bit more positive. It certainly beats the alternative of oppression of views etc. and we all have to start somewhere...

What really struck me the other day was the comparison someone made between the good relations we had formed with Germany and other countries we fought in World War II 30 years afterwards, compared with the cr@p relationship we have with Argentina thirty years afterwards.

But it was really in the scale of foot chewing on the fly, a very minor gaffe, like mispronouncing a name, or eating with the wrong fork, or 'accidentally' doing the backward peace sign while in Australia (and you ~know~ *that* wasn't an accident ;-). It wasn't like she threw up at a state dinner, regretted not being able to speak Latin when in Central America, or glad-handing Lizzie while giving her a iPod with all of your boring narcissistic speeches on it. It was an oops. And it could have been handled discreetly and professionally in the open and at full tilt behind a closed door.

You say that Argentina is strong because it never forgets the ills perpetrated on it (mostly imagined) by other in the past. You say this “strength” will stop others from doing it again. You then say that Argentine is currently being bullied, “picked on” and harangued by other nations.
Doesn't show that your “strength” is working...does it?
The truth however is more logical.
The Argentines were very much part of the genocidal march across the Americas, whereas North America at least recognise this crime against humanity, it seems South America, and Argentina in particular, wish to blame someone else, or white wash it from history.
The Argentines are very much responsible for their own economic plight. The position of power of 100 years ago, with a strong economy, fantastic natural resources, growing infrastructure, has been wrecked by successive corrupt, self serving, crooked leaders....and cheered by people like you all the way. We witness this daily on here.
You talk of foreigners “messing with you”. Argentina has got off lightly. Very lightly. Had it been Russian, French or American territory you invaded in 1982, the military repercussions would have been far more severe, we went easy on you.
Foreigners as you call them, have let the Argentines off staggering sums of debt, wracked up by corrupt governments of the past. If they had forced Argentina to pay, you'd be starving in the streets.
Finally, and I guess most readily experienced on these boards, Britain has patiently, calmly and professionally sat back and watched Argentina lie about it to any country, institution or news agency that is prepared to listen, rewriting history, dishonestly talking gobshoite around the world. The retaliation should be far more severe...you should be “messed with”
It is out of sympathy and pity for the Argentine people given their joke of a government, rather than fear of their strength that retaliation is not forthcoming.

You wanted to be a part of the UN, IMF, WTO etc. but you don't want to play by the rules that EVERYONE else adheres to.

It doesn't matter what you read in a text book or see on TV about a country (although the theory is very important). It's not until you go there, meet the people (not the foreigners working in the hotels, restaurants and tour companies either) and experience some of their lives.
Just don't end up travelling as much as I do! I've started again for the year. The UK has been good and it was great to see friends and all of my favourite sights but I'm just getting tired of so much travel. Heading south again on Saturday but not directly back to the Falklands; I won't be back there for some time. Next week sure will be interesting.
Are you on the road again yet?

I'm heading to Colombia in July but probably fly via the US as it is cheapest, I'd prefer Santiago or BA but I can get to Bogotá for only ~A$1,800 on airlines I trust via San Fran or LAX. Alas not down to the Islands.

The only people who think a lot of travel is glamorous are people who don't do a lot of travel. Don't get me wrong, i do enjoy it.
The other issue for me is keeping my identity safe. There are only 3,000 of us so if I mention my industry or too much about my itineraries people will easily work out who I am.
Having said that I travel extensively and am usually away from hom for around a full third of the year. Trips range in length from one to three weeks normally. Sometimes the odd one is much longer and sometimes the odd one is much shorter. I tend to be away every other month but usually try to avoid travel in December and January to spend a nice amount of time at home over the summer. As is the case most years I failed again this January.
I mainly deal with government officials in the various countries and sometimes politicians. Often the actual work is thankless and mentally strenuous but I enjoy it.
Enjoy your travels and make the most of being a student. It is a truly precious privilege in this world to have such opportunities at your disposal.
Colombia's ok, overrated. Southeast Asia has better beaches for much cheaper, and much safer. Ecuador's got better volcanoes for noticeably cheaper. Colombia exports all its good coffee, so don't expect good coffee, unless you want to pay even more than you would in USA, or even Australia, to get the same coffee, cause Colombia's good coffee can only be found in really expensive boutique places in Colombia. Bogota is mostly disgusting, but there are some decent little pieces. The south is much prettier, like Popayan/Cali. The only real reason to travel Colombia, IMO, is to check it off the list of visiting every country in the world scenario, like I'm doing....or if you like cocaine. I enjoyed climbing its volcanoes, and the smaller, higher elevation towns, but the beaches and cities were disgusting for the most part.

Chile was one of my favorite countries to travel in the world. The fruit is incredible and so cheap! The scenery/land is exquisite, and the people are nice and intelligent. And its very safe!
Argentina, on the other hand, is a whole nother story nowadays. It's a mess now. Crime is outta control, expect to have at least one scam/robbery tried on you. Expect prices so high that its more expensive than Australia, which isn't easy to accomplish. A broken public transport system, insanely expensive busses and metros that crash and kill/injure hundreds at a time. You have to pay exorbitant prices for everything in Argentina now, EVERYTHING, including every park or site to see.
@96 I set off next month. I am inclined to keep my trips under two months at a time now rather than the epic overseas trips I did in the past. Like you, I do suffer from travel fatigue when on the road too much but wouldn't swap what I am doing for a suburban life. After the initial joy of reuniting with family, friends and loved ones, I start yearning for an itinerate lifestyle again.

In my experience Chileans are quite blasé about living in such an extraordinary place. : ) And it is safe, though to talk to Chileans you would think they were living in a desperate place. I guess it is subjective.
That said, I find myself enjoying most places I visit. There is a place in Argentina that is one of my top ten places in the world. It is true that is has declined noticeably in the last few years but I still enjoy the crazy country. There is something to be said for being surrounded by irresponsibility and feckless, reckless abandon; I just wouldn't want to have to live with it on a permanent basis.
Is there anything more exciting than arriving in a new country with everything to explore?

Bariloche, El Bolson, Nequen, and El Calafate are among the most beautiful places in the world....but I still wouldn't visit them again until better policies are put into place in that country. You can get a similar vista in Chile for a better price and better policies until then.

What's convincing me is the comments about the Chilean people, the concensus seems to be that they are a friendly and happy bunch. To my mind you can have the greatest scenery and prices in the world, but the people make the place.
