Argentine president Cristina Fernández tour of Southeast Asia came to an end on Monday with an embarrassing admission by the leader that she had “put her foot in it” in a press conference in Hanoi by making a statement which was factually incorrect regarding when Argentina recognized Vietnam as a state. What a difference between officials that admit making mistakes.

And the anglo-saxon culture, where even when speaking the truth, you are traduced and ostracized if the truth “hurts”. Mitt Romney should know all about it when he only spoke the truth when he said “UK dropped the ball in the Olympics, and the games are too big for them”, and he was excoriated... and he said nothing wront or mistaken!!

Indeed, botched flags, anthems, empty seats, burstin sewers, and two police strikes later... he was proven right.

@3 - wow, clutching at churlish straws there fella.... The olympics were a resounding success, which some of your fellow South Americans admitted to the worldwide media they would have trouble following. Have you learnt to switch the lights on at a football stadium yet ?

And you just can't help yourself can you. The strikes were called off. You really are crap at facts. Are you part of CFK's government ?

Ah back to making the mistake of confusing causality vs correlation again I see Tobias.

The Olympics were a roaring success by anyone measure hence the reason the Brazilian government requested the UK's assistance in its preparation. Still in your warped mind, something else happened of course, it just appears only you hold that view VS the respected world.

And also its worth pointing out she blamed Tinman as opposed to being strong enough to apologize on behalf of herself and the Argentine government. You will find folk with a narcissistic egomaniac streak like CFK will always place the blame elsewhere.

I mentioned CFKC blaming Timerman in another thread.

What is shocking is that Timerman seems to be writing her speeches on a scrap of paper at the last minute. Don't they have researchers and speechwriters that would get this right and make a speech tailored to the audience she is addressing - the Argentine government look like a bunch of amateurs.

CFKC “paying tribute to her counterpart’s knowledge of Argentina” clearly doesn't understand the value of having qualified and intelligent staff to brief her rather than her son's mates and a bunch of sycophants.

@10, I agree that is bad form. But as for her statement blaming Timmerman? That's even worse. She needed to just say that she put her foot in her mouth, without throwing him under the bus. She can yell at him *behind closed doors* all she wants (and, yes, maybe she should), but outwardly she should graciously apologize for what came out of her own mouth, and Sang would have graciously accepted it with no worries. This was a minor gaffe that she unnecessarily made much worse.

We do not attack you personally, but your posts.

With reference to the supposed demonization of Argentines on here, this is not 100% true.

It is correct to assume there are a few nutters on here that would gladly cause holocaust but many others just wish for a balanced relationship with Argentines and Argentina in general. Isolationist policies practiced by CFK and her devoted followers do not make good friends, no matter what bad blood has occurred in the past. There are plenty here on ''our side'' that have both visited, lived and know Argentina for the country it is and could be. It would appear more positive than what is generally posted here.

Maybe, just maybe, if the isolationism that ferments currently could be turned into something a bit more positive. It certainly beats the alternative of oppression of views etc. and we all have to start somewhere...

Ninja, you are right, of course.

However, TTT is the ”attention-seeking child“.

He keeps saying, ”Leave us alone“, ”we don't need you“, ”you don't like us, so we hate you“, ”go away“, and finally,”I'm leaving“.

Of course, all these statements are designed to get a response like ”Oh no, don't feel like that, don't go, we can get along...“ and on and on.

He won't go anywhere and enjoy all our arguing that Argentina cannot exist without us.

I suggest that we just agree that Argentina would be better off alone, and ”if you're leaving, you had best go, smart-like! You won't be missed, and Argentina won't be missed. Suits us fine.”

That should save us a couple of hundred wasted posts.

The only reason why nostradamus is considering leaving is because these conversations have finally made him realise that he actually comes from a backward thinking, corrupt, out of touch, left of left of centre country that has no future unless it changes its government and their policy which quite clearly do not help the argentine people, south america, or anyone else for that matter. He is completely embarressed that he's argentine and no longer has the strength to defend the undefendable. And he, and PH, thinks that the UK is finished? The UK that is now the world's 6th largest economy and the largest exporter to Germany beating even the US and France - and we're finished?

And you honestly believe that 100% of that is attributable just to the Faklands row?

Your government has tried to screw us in every area of diplomacy for 50-60 years, from Antarctica, to trying to (and failing) to create a bogus “Southern Ocean”, alongside 61 other countries... thankfully Argentina vetoed it and the proposal has so far not been refloated. A clear attempt to strip away economic waters from Argentina in the far far south around the Piedra Buena Straight (there is no Drake Passage... Argentina and Chile control most of those waters territorialy or EEZ).

They have also for decades tried to cause wars between South American nations, in a well-known divide and conquer strategy. The UK foreign policy goal is to promote poverty, divisiveness, and instability in South America. Thankfuly you are not 5% as influencial as you were 50 years ago let alone 100 (when you cause havoc around the planet), so increasingly your long history of doing harm outside your shores is increasingly nugatory.

Tell me, if the UK were trying to create havoc 100 years ago and in your words were very influencial, why was Argentina one of the richest countries in the world.

Why has Argentinas wealth then fallen compatively to the rest of the world 50 years ago, as in your words, Britains influence was reducing,

And now, when you say britain has only a tiny influence, Argentina is one of the poorest most corrupt shitholes on the planet?

    Doesnt seem to add up.

In fifty more years, carrying on the pattern, Britain will have zero influence and Argentina will be hell on earth.

Interestingly exactly the same happened in Zimbabwe.

I would never say we could win a fight against the entire planet seeking to ruin us... but I have said we at least have the balls to stand up to it.

If all of Britain's former enemies have reconciled with you, then that speaks fine of US. Because we never forget. We haven't forgotten the Spanish (why do you think we screw them over with “YPF” and corporate colonialism talk)... and that happend 200 years ago.

Argentina never forgets, that's why we are still fighting and battling over things that happened 100 years ago by former presidents of ours, or why Peron is still so influencial... we NEVER forget, and NEVER move on until we decide it is time. It is amusing that all over Latin America the 'badies' are the Spanish that brutally subdued and conquered the continent but only in Argentina do they give that role to the English (they rarely say British), and only since Peron started brainwashing them and changing history. That alone should be apparent to even the most cautious of enquiring minds in Argentina.

@59 Hmm let me get this straight... You want Europe to apologise for sending your ancestors to South America. So, in other words, you want us to apologise for the fact you exist? I think that's something we can all agree on.

  • Shed-time

@59 I think the issue here is that in Europe, we generally understand that previous crimes against humanity, such as war crimes or genocide are not something to be proud or happy about. So, you will see Europe frowning upon the Holocause, Armenian genocide, et cetera. Generally in Europe war is seen as a bad thing.

In Argentina, you glorify genocide with pictures of the war criminals themselves on your bank notes, you have laws named after common murderers, and you conveniently forget that the genocide happened when it suits your attempts to claim other people's land. You're basically a mess of immorality.

That's the difference. Get over it.

The saddest thing is that Nossies rants are on a news story where there actually is a country that has been screwed over.

Vietnam was screwed over by the Chinese
Vietnam was screwed over by the French
Vietnam was screwed over by the Japanese
Vietnam was screwed over by the French again
Vietnam was screwed over by the Americans

today, are they bitter, are they pathetic like Nossie...

No, they are building a tiger economy, working with their former enemies to build a better society for their people. They have proven themselves 1000 times braver, 1000 times more resolute and with 1000 times greater humility than the Argentines.

if any country had cause to whinge and complain it would be Vietnam...instead they have got on with life and beginning to prosper.

Perhaps CFK should have stopped to learn rather than looking to teach!!

@20 Attack you? Of course not. You open your big, fat gob and make a complete arse of yourself...again. And you want us to criticise someone else? Have you ever thought of trying to become a prat? Ambition and trying to better yourself is good. Even if you have no chance!
@22 YOU don't have any soil. It belongs to Amerindians. If you want to “isolate” yourself, go drown. That's real “isolation”! Don't be scared. If you let us know when, we'll all stand around waving goodbye. What's wrong with hating argies? (Different from Argentines like Simon 68.) Argies seem well worth hating. You're belligerent, cowardly, criminal, dumb, futile, genocidal, hapless, ignorant, juvenile, larcenous, mendacious, putrid, queer, ridiculous, stupid, turgid, unscrupulous, vicious, xenophobic and so on. What's not to hate?
@27 You don't have one. Read the Commandments lately? Start with number 3. Then 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Well, well, well. Broken 6 out of 10!
    @29 Thought you wanted “isolation”.
@42 Don't be a silly boy. We haven't tried to screw you over Antarctica (disgusting thought). We were just there first, that's all. “Southern Ocean” appears on all internationally-recognised maps. Just not argie ones. Get out more. Of course there's a Drake Passage. You're probably sitting on it. Always loved screwing the Spanish! Why would we need to promote poverty, divisiveness and instability? You don't need out help!
@48 You don't have the balls to play bowls. Or even marbles. Bet we can screw you next year. And you'll love it. You like being screwed! Because you ask for it.
@59 Sorry. The first recorded “pillaging” of the country currently called “argentina” was by.....argies! The two “conquests of the desert”. Remember? Or is that “inconvenient”? You need some “psychotherapy”. Find a concrete wall. Smash your face against it, as hard as you can, 100 times. If your skull hasn't fractured, do it again. Keep going until you have expelled at least 12 pints of blood.

    @48:@59 nutjob the 1st

My recent ancestors (last few hundred years) were all miners, or related industries. None of my direct ancestors even served in the 2 world wars, never mind any of the other military conflicts. Generations, before my parents, never left the British Isles (or even Britain itself), and my parents didn't until the mid 1990's.

And you want to blame me for crimes in the Americas??????

97% of Argentina's population either are, or are decended from, colonists. So why don't you have another go at guessing which Europeans commited crimes.

I'll give you a clue: they will have had to have been at the scene of the crimes.

The only people you cannot seriously point the finger at is maybe the Amerindians, and the Falklanders as there was not an indiginous population to screw over.

    @81

You don't follow your own logic.

You say that Argentina is strong because it never forgets the ills perpetrated on it (mostly imagined) by other in the past. You say this “strength” will stop others from doing it again. You then say that Argentine is currently being bullied, “picked on” and harangued by other nations.

Doesn't show that your “strength” is working...does it?

The truth however is more logical.

The Argentines were very much part of the genocidal march across the Americas, whereas North America at least recognise this crime against humanity, it seems South America, and Argentina in particular, wish to blame someone else, or white wash it from history.

The Argentines are very much responsible for their own economic plight. The position of power of 100 years ago, with a strong economy, fantastic natural resources, growing infrastructure, has been wrecked by successive corrupt, self serving, crooked leaders....and cheered by people like you all the way. We witness this daily on here.

You talk of foreigners “messing with you”. Argentina has got off lightly. Very lightly. Had it been Russian, French or American territory you invaded in 1982, the military repercussions would have been far more severe, we went easy on you.

Foreigners as you call them, have let the Argentines off staggering sums of debt, wracked up by corrupt governments of the past. If they had forced Argentina to pay, you'd be starving in the streets.

Finally, and I guess most readily experienced on these boards, Britain has patiently, calmly and professionally sat back and watched Argentina lie about it to any country, institution or news agency that is prepared to listen, rewriting history, dishonestly talking gobshoite around the world. The retaliation should be far more severe...you should be “messed with”

It is out of sympathy and pity for the Argentine people given their joke of a government, rather than fear of their strength that retaliation is not forthcoming.

Centuries can pass by before we decide to let something go.”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“

Actually.... You forget history whenever it is convenient and you forget that you invaded the Falklands in 1982... ”it wasnt us, it was the Junta“.

You also forget 'you' colonised Patagonia in a near-genocidal campaign of expansion.

Doesnt look like very good memory to me... at virtual every opportunity you and your ilk forget things whenever it suits you... its done so often its become an almost ”national trait”... except that I dont believe for one moment that you represent the average Argentine... those claims by yourself and others here are just one more historical delusion.

    @81 - Tobias, Nostril, whatever

You really are losing the plot.

You blame Europeans for all your ills, yet it is YOU who is descended from Europeans. The European colonists that you hate so much are YOU and the other 43, 000, 000 people of non-native Amerindian descent. You are the murdering colonists, Tobias. YOU.

But then again, you weren't born in the 19 century, so you can't be held accountable for what happened then, espeically as it is morally wrong to judge people from the past using todays moral standards.

However, this is exactly what you do all the time. You constantly blame the British for things done in the 19 c and before, by people who are long dead to people who are long dead, AND you judge them using today's moral standards. This makes you a hypocrite of huge proportions.

You are a weak man. You cannot accept that you are wrong. You cannot accept that Argentina can be wrong, and you cannot accept that Argentina itself CAUSED all of the problems it is now facing.

You wanted to be a part of the UN, IMF, WTO etc. but you don't want to play by the rules that EVERYONE else adheres to.

You are like children who are caught cheating at a game, and are then excluded from playing, and then complain that everyone is picking on you.

That makes you weak. A weak person. A weak government causing a WEAK country, economically, politically, socially and morally.

Maybe one day, Tobias, you'll grow up into a man. The best way to do this is to broaden your horizons by travelling. Of course, you can't do that because your government have left you so monumentally poor that you can't afford to travel to the next province, let alone another country.

My advice, Tobias, is travel. You see when you travel you suddenly realise that no matter what colour, religion or nationality someone is, people are basically all the same, and not evil monsters that you purport them to be. You fear foreigners, so you demonise them, but it just reveals you to be a racist and a coward.

I agree; travel is the best way to properly learn about the world. It doesn't matter what you read in a text book or see on TV about a country (although the theory is very important). It's not until you go there, meet the people (not the foreigners working in the hotels, restaurants and tour companies either) and experience some of their lives.

Just don't end up travelling as much as I do! I've started again for the year. The UK has been good and it was great to see friends and all of my favourite sights but I'm just getting tired of so much travel. Heading south again on Saturday but not directly back to the Falklands; I won't be back there for some time. Next week sure will be interesting.

Hey Anglotino, it's been a while since I mentioned my travel on here. Some people accuse me a bragging about it. It's not bragging, trust me. The only people who think a lot of travel is glamorous are people who don't do a lot of travel. Don't get me wrong, i do enjoy it.

The other issue for me is keeping my identity safe. There are only 3,000 of us so if I mention my industry or too much about my itineraries people will easily work out who I am.

Having said that I travel extensively and am usually away from hom for around a full third of the year. Trips range in length from one to three weeks normally. Sometimes the odd one is much longer and sometimes the odd one is much shorter. I tend to be away every other month but usually try to avoid travel in December and January to spend a nice amount of time at home over the summer. As is the case most years I failed again this January.

I mainly deal with government officials in the various countries and sometimes politicians. Often the actual work is thankless and mentally strenuous but I enjoy it.

Enjoy your travels and make the most of being a student. It is a truly precious privilege in this world to have such opportunities at your disposal.

Colombia's ok, overrated. Southeast Asia has better beaches for much cheaper, and much safer. Ecuador's got better volcanoes for noticeably cheaper. Colombia exports all its good coffee, so don't expect good coffee, unless you want to pay even more than you would in USA, or even Australia, to get the same coffee, cause Colombia's good coffee can only be found in really expensive boutique places in Colombia. Bogota is mostly disgusting, but there are some decent little pieces. The south is much prettier, like Popayan/Cali. The only real reason to travel Colombia, IMO, is to check it off the list of visiting every country in the world scenario, like I'm doing....or if you like cocaine. I enjoyed climbing its volcanoes, and the smaller, higher elevation towns, but the beaches and cities were disgusting for the most part.

same user as mastershakejb, just usin my other ridiculous name to add something:
Santiago is awesome, but further south is better, like Chilloe, Puerto Varas, Valdivia, Pucon. Chile was one of my favorite countries to travel in the world. The fruit is incredible and so cheap! The scenery/land is exquisite, and the people are nice and intelligent. And its very safe!

Argentina, on the other hand, is a whole nother story nowadays. It's a mess now. Crime is outta control, expect to have at least one scam/robbery tried on you. Expect prices so high that its more expensive than Australia, which isn't easy to accomplish. A broken public transport system, insanely expensive busses and metros that crash and kill/injure hundreds at a time. You have to pay exorbitant prices for everything in Argentina now, EVERYTHING, including every park or site to see.

@96 I set off next month. I am inclined to keep my trips under two months at a time now rather than the epic overseas trips I did in the past. Like you, I do suffer from travel fatigue when on the road too much but wouldn't swap what I am doing for a suburban life. After the initial joy of reuniting with family, friends and loved ones, I start yearning for an itinerate lifestyle again.

@98 I have to agree, I am smitten with Chile. The contrasts from the north to the south never fails to lift my heart. In my experience Chileans are quite blasé about living in such an extraordinary place. : ) And it is safe, though to talk to Chileans you would think they were living in a desperate place. I guess it is subjective.

That said, I find myself enjoying most places I visit. There is a place in Argentina that is one of my top ten places in the world. It is true that is has declined noticeably in the last few years but I still enjoy the crazy country. There is something to be said for being surrounded by irresponsibility and feckless, reckless abandon; I just wouldn't want to have to live with it on a permanent basis.

Is there anything more exciting than arriving in a new country with everything to explore?
