On Tuesday Argentina’s Foreign minister Hector Timerman together with representatives from different Latinamerican and Caribbean organizations are scheduled to meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to address the “Malvinas Islands question”, according to a release from the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The 35 minutes meeting according to Ban Ki Moon’s Tuesday agenda, will take place at 15:30 hours New York time and besides Timerman will include his Cuban peer Bruno Rodriguez, pro-tempore chairman of CELAC (Community of Latinamerican and Caribbean States); Uruguay’s Foreign minister Luis Almagro in representation of Mercosur and Peru’s Deputy Foreign minister Jose Beraún Aranibar, since Lima holds the pro-tempore chair of Unasur, Union of South American Nations.

According to Argentine diplomatic sources Timerman and his Latinamerican peers will insist before Ban Ki Moon that the UK must abide UN resolutions referred to the sovereignty dispute over the Falklands/Malvinas.

Timerman is also scheduled to meet with the president of the C-24 or Decolonization Committee, Ecuadorean ambassador Diego Morejón Pazmiño.

On Monday afternoon Timerman with Argentina’s UN ambassador Marita Perceval met with the Security Council permanent representatives from France, China and Russia (currently presiding the council) to address several priority issues such as the Syrian crisis and the potential use of chemical weapons; the stalled Israel-Palestine peace process, the Central African republic armed rebellion as well as the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

Later in Washington Timerman met with the Deputy Secretary of State William Burns. Argentina since January first and for the next two years is a non permanent member of the UN Security Council. Argentina was supported by 182 votes out of 193 UN members. This is the ninth time Argentina sits at the UN Security Council.
