Mercosur! Pfffft who would want that poisoned chalice?

You're already half out of that club of economic deadbeats. Keep going and checkout the Pacific Alliance instead.

If you are indeed bent on modernising Paraguay; then Mercosur is looking back, not forward.

It is you that has time and time again proven that you know very little about a great deal.

Don't confuse GEOpolitics with GEOgraphy. Geography is not destiny. So what, little ol' Paraguay is squeezed between much larger neighbours. That is just location not destiny.

Just as Australia had the 'tyranny of distance', Paraquay has the opposite. You can't argue against the fact that Mercosur is inward looking and the Pacific Alliance is the exact opposite.

Speaking of opposites; on growth and trade, the Pacific Alliance is beating Mercosur hands down.

Considering Cartes business background, the state interventionist model espoused by Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela isn't business friendly and something he would approve of or emulate.

If Cartes is as limited in his outlook as you and believes that Paraguay's future is limited or constrained by its location then Mercosur probably is the perfect fit.

Just look at what free trade has done to Europe.
You just want us to follow your footsteps just to see us fall, like you lot, and then point your pointy fingers telling us we are just as bad as you.

    We're not, we're better.

And so is the people of Europe.
    Soon they will rise.

You do talk a load of bollocks, don't you?

The ONLY people likely to “rise” in Europe are the Brits, against the EU which seems hell bent on establishing the tyranny of AR in Europe.

You have no knowledge of, or experience in, Europe; that much is obvious.

Your post made no sense. Which is not surprising when you try to argue economics.

    Follow our footsteps? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Argentina and Australia once had the same standard of living and economies and look what happened when they decided to follow the footsteps of populism and quasi-fascism.

Follow our footsteps..... you bloody well wish mate.

@4 Hahahahahahahaha. And how are you “better”? How about your famed mercosur? A little comparison. Mercosur GDP per capita - US$12,599. Pacific Alliance GDP per capita - US$13,306. European Union GDP per capita - US$31,607. So it's not money. How about corruption? Taking averages from the Corruption Perception Index. the EU scores about 56, the Pacific Alliance 45 and mercosur 39. That's pretty poor. Shall we look at the Human Development Index? EU - 0.876, Pacific Alliance - 0.752, mercosur - 0.731. So in what way are you better? Tell us. About the only thing you seem to be “better” at is talking bollocks.

Western Paraguay is only 600km from Chile (through southern Bolivia), which the same distance from Eastern Paraguay to the Atlantic.

We need to think creatively about improving the future of our brethren in southern Bolivia.

Funny how some people here think that Paraguay will leave Mercosur. It's not gonna happen, so stop smoking all that meth.

I hope Cristina and co are not being too hasty to be concilliatory here. Probably best to get Paraguay back in the tent pissing out; as long as it won't just step inside but keep pissing in the same direction! I don't like the look of Cartes at all but I imagine Cristina's reference in praising his opponent for admitting defeat was rather pointed, given the stark contrast to Caprilles...

Brazilian is right, just listen to the Paraguayan oligarch. He says abandoning Mercosur would be utterly nonsense.
Like the theists, YOU are the one with the claims. YOU need to support them.
Brazilian is merely giving you facts.

    ;)

    # 10 - If you want some facts, you can luck up the declarations of the newly elected president of Paraguay. But that must be a conspiracy. Maybe you've heard of it, there is a site called google. where they have this little magic box where you can search for information and get millions os results. I suggest you use it.
