I'm Brazilian and I think that in order to keep friends close, Chile needs to move out. Russia would probably fit in Latin America. USSR “saudosismo”, zero democracy, poorly paved roads, no institutions, high crime rates, red-tape, etc. LOL

Isn't it time that Chile actually stood up and said which side of the fence it is on? Has anyone got the texts of these defence and security agreements? Where does Chile get off “supporting” argieland when it has such agreements with the UK? Is Chile “trustworthy”?

Politics is never as simple as them and us. Chile is part of South America with highly volatile and acquisitive neighbours that have to been managed. Just because your best friends might live at a distance, you still have to get along with your neighbours.

I think Chile walks a great line of placating their neighbours, building links that create bonds, whilst taking the country forward to full development. It is not easy for a country of 16 million to deal with the big bullies around but they have played a good game so far.

Chileans have an island mentality, similar to people from the UK in many ways. You could draw many parallels with our relationship with Europe. We work with them because they are our neighbours, and trade equals wealth, but we consider ourselves separate. Chile, cut off by The Andes, the desert, antarctica and the Pacific Ocean, is like an island.

Chile and the UK have a very long relationship, it was a British Royal Navy admiral who set up their current Navy, and they still buy war ships from the UK. We have helped Chile in the past and they have helped us, without doubt our best friend in South America.

I love Chile, Chilians and their lovely red wine.
Looking forward to Young England RU smashing those ugly old Argy knackers into the turf at the weekend. Shame Twelvetrees has been diverted elsewhere.

It's like living next door to a neighbor that you really can't stand, but at least you have a high fence to separate your property from him. Every so often he makes a lot of loud noises and complaints, but you just keep your mouth shut and smile when you greet him on the street.

There is no doubt that Chile were a big help to us in 1982, they did not have to, bearing in mind the repurcussions they could have faced had it gone the other way.

Nice to see the UK respecting them as equals.

    Two Points,

1, I think Chile is walking a tight rope hoping to cuddle both sides
But she can still fall, if she fall on our side [great] but what if, after giving them military equipment and up to date weapons,=they fall on argentines side,
Will these weapons be used against us, after all Britain is surely well aware this could go bang,
    Still,
Britain has a nasty habit lately of letting others burn our fingers??

2, you can bet CFK will scream at us for militarising the south pacific and thus leading to the south Atlantic,
And we bet she will slate off Chile no end…
    Justa thought..

  • The Chilean perspective

Elaine you got it spot on we are an island, for example our unique accent does not resemble anything in the Hispanic world. In our formative years we had little contact with the rest and our culture reflects that.
As for you Briton, you have in Chile a reliable and honorable ally.
We live in a neighborhood full of nutjobs with two out of three of our immediate neighbors currently suing us for territory at the Haige. We have to be particularly diplomatic with them even though we have the means to crush all three at the same time should it come to that. No one in his right mind would want to undo the progress we have made since the Chicago boys got to work in 1975 with an unnecessary military conflict. That is why we bite our tounge so often hoping that they will grow up soon and stop being such duchebags.

    you may well be correct,
but one thinks that its not so much [you] but others in power,

CFK will always try her luck for this victory,
we hope you are capable of telling her where to go, when required.

    Briton.

I think you will find that the Chileans are well used to telling the Argentines where to go. They have been doing it for years and it really gets up their nose,
having a neighbour they can not scare or intimidate.

Good win for England. Argentine players were very poor and didn't seem to fancy putting up any kind of resistance.

As I said a couple of months ago:

“Now that Argentina plays regularly with the former SANZAR powers, Argentina will just be another stop over in the June tests for the Northern Hemisphere to be massacred.”

    http://en.mercopress.com/2013/03/27/argentine-rugby-union-admits-concern-about-possible-incidents-when-england-plays-next-june

So both British team to tour in the last 3 years (Scotland 2010 / England 2013) have whitewashed us on home turf. I guess just like in most things I don't know my arse from my elbow..

I'm off to cry into the gutter and lament the state of my nation.

The Puma had a prickly rose rammed up its arse today.
