Aug 07th, 2013 - 06:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Izumo-class helicopter destroyer is the successor to the Hyuga-class helicopter destroyers. The Izumo-class may be bigger than the Hyuga-class, but then the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers are bigger than the Invincible-class.
Japan has given no problems for 68 years. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force holds regular naval conferences with both the UK and the USA.
AS strong allies of the UK, this is fine, they could build 20 of them for all I care.

Why are the Chinese even bothered by this vessel? It only carries Helicopters, and only nine of them at that. I expect the Chinese are still a bit arse-soar about being so easily dominated by a relatively small Island nation like Japan, Now we know how France, Spain and even Argieland feel!!

They have stolen...er...plagiarised the plans for a Russian aircraft carrier, but they lack the ship building skills, expertise etc... to build it safely.
The last one they built was so dangerous that the People's Chinese Navy refused to use it.
So know they look at the Japanese carrier, which whilst designated a helicopter platform, could (looking at the length of the runway) be converted to fixed wing aircraft, especially STOVL aircraft.
That is why they are worried, and no doubt, more than a little jealous.

Aug 08th, 2013 - 06:45 am - Link - Report abuse 0The most obvious thing missing from it, if it is planned to be used as a platform for STOVL aircraft is the lack of a ski jump at the end, which would reduce the amount of stores (both armament and fuel) that it could get itself airborne with.
Heck, the Royal Navy managed to improvise catapults to launch a (admittedly propeller) fighter on merchant ships in 1941 (it didn't have the facilities to land the fighter again, so it either had to divert to land or bail out and be recovered from the water by a ship).

I think I'm definitely not able to be a sailor, because I simply can't see the difference between this Izumo 'hellicopter destroyer' boat, and a common a-craft, I mean, this ship is just 17 meters shorter than a Clemenceau-class, for example, heck!, It's 40 meters longer than an Invincible!

And I don't even mentioned the other general characteristics!
Anyway, it doesn't matter how much the Chinese govt. whines, the JMSDF will going to stick with it's agenda. It will take a lot of time and effort for the PLAN to catch up, if, the possibility for such an event to happen present itself to be plausible, which, given it's present technological and logistical level and capability, it's not.

#20 Unless the designed that assault carrier with a catapult in mind, a retrofit job is no small task, be it steam or magnetic. Regardless of it's size it's nothing more than a platform for helicopters. With a small beam and the location of the superstructure, I don't see that as a quick change retro-fit. It's an assault carrier....period.

I don't see the big deal about this all so far, as I stated before, both countries will keep with it's own agendas, despite any foreign pressure. Be by the JMSDF part, for it's efforts to rebuild it's fleet; or, the PLAN part, in it's effort to build it's own fleet. As long as their respective govts. manage to fund their plans, nothing will change.
