From the Fukushima nuclear leak to the war in Syria to Europe's economic crisis, the choice of the host city for the 2020 Olympics is fraught with risks. Picking the site with the least risks shapes up as the challenge for the International Olympic Committee on Saturday in a tight three-city contest that members say is too close to call. What a joke, Spain can't afford these games. I would vote for Tokyo.

No doubt Spain will find some way to get the EU Fisheries Fund to pay for it.

I'd love to be a fly in the wall when Spain approaches Britain for support for their bid.

I wonder if they will be disappointed?

A massive portion some 25/30% of IOC members are from Commonwealth nations, I wonder if that will effect Spain's bid, what with them bullying tactics etc certainly don't cover them in glory, besides the football of recent years Spain is no real sporting nation anyway, unless they have a bull to torture to death that is.

There's SEVEN years yet. Call it off. Start again next year. But, in any event, rule out cheapo Madrid. Turkey? Nope, could be in the middle of the war. Japan? There might be no-one there. Let''s try Iran!

    Fingers crossed it's Spain.

That will screw them up big-time because the spicks cannot organise the usual.

And I agree about bull “fighting”. If the poncing about in tights against a pre-weakened animal is a national sport it just underlines what a bunch of cowards these slimy dagoes are.

In the ring, no cape, sword or the other support from horses, etc. and then we will see how brave these little weaners are.

I wasn't thinking in my haste to deprive them of the glory. It would send them financially, further down the gurgler. And maybe some Catalonian independence supporters could hold demos during the games.

They also could not be seen to be bullying Gibraltar during the games. But having got them they would want a lot of visitors.

I was amazed to see on TV last night how many pickpockets there are in Spain, and that they only get imprisoned if they steal over a certain amount. Even when undercover cops exposed failed pickpockets, they are allowed to go and carry on stealing. That's going to go down well at an olympics!

I'm hoping Ostanbul wins it. Japan and Spain have had the Olympics once each.

Also they were in Asia in 2008 and Europe in 2012. So a new region would benefit.

It is true pick-pocketing and bag snatching is very high in Spain but I have no doubt they will crack down on the problem for the duration of the games. We drove out a lot of nuisance scammers for the duration of the 2012 Olympics and increased the police on the streets.

Watching a news report on the BBC it would appear Spain addressed the 'Olympics on a shoestring' proposal well. Personally I don't think that is what people will want in seven years time but that is JMO. Istanbul did not really address their recent problems but Japan went all out to assure everyone that there is no safety issue if they get the games. Japan seems to have offered the best proposal but when has that ever really counted?

I think it was the doping scandal, not properly addressed or investigated, that blew their chances. But, since the voting is carried out in secret, we shall not know. I doubt they have gained many friends with their behaviour of late.

I also heard the comment that the IOC were reluctant to overburden countries struggling financially.

    @27

”The economy of Japan is the third largest in the world by nominal GDP, the fourth largest by Purchasing Power Parity [10] and is the world's second largest developed economy.[11] According to the International Monetary Fund, the country's per capita GDP (PPP) was at $34,739 or the 25th highest in 2011. Japan is a member of Group of Eight. The Japanese economy is forecasted by the Quarterly Tankan survey of business sentiment conducted by the Bank of Japan.[12] See also Economic relations of Japan.
Japan is the world's 3rd largest automobile manufacturing country, has the largest electronics goods industry, and is often ranked among the world's most innovative countries leading several measures of global patent filings.[13] Facing increasing competition from China and South Korea, manufacturing in Japan today now focuses primarily on high-tech and precision goods, such as optical equipment, hybrid cars, and robotics. Beside the Kantō region,[14][15][16][17] the Kansai region is one the leading industrial clusters and the manufacturing center for the Japanese economy.[18]
Japan is the world's largest creditor nation,[19] generally running an annual trade surplus and having a considerable net international investment surplus. As of 2010, Japan possesses 13.7% of the world's private financial assets (the 2nd largest in the world) at an estimated $14.6 trillion.[20] As of 2011, 68 of the Fortune 500 companies are based in Japan.”

There is nothing wrong with borrowing money if you intend to, and can, pay it back.

The other reasons for choosing Japan were that after all the concerns about Rio, they wanted somewhere safe.

    Interesting reading, for sure.

    But

“And history has shown us that the best way to reduce a nation’s debt-to-GDP ratio is is to focus on boosting GDP rather than cutting debt.”

That is a dangerous lie. Because you are creating an illusion. An illusion that forces you to produce and consume in an ever increasing manner in order to get that GDP to a higher rate. The debt will increase by itself due to interests.
I'm sure you understand the only possible outcome from this model by now...

“I'm sure you understand the only possible outcome from this model by now”

Time will tell. Economies that exploit resources - versus those that innovate - as Japan does.

Resources are finite, technological innovation - not so.

”ow!, wow!, wow! Such hatred against Spain!!! Did your wives cheat on you with a Spaniard?

If Spain spews hatred, guess what? It's going to get it returned in spades.
    Because Spain initiated the hatred.

    Spain bullies Gibraltar

-Gibraltar goes to Britain, the EU and the Commonwealth

    -Spain backs down.

(Perhaps I should say, Spain might back down-it's not going to benefit if it doesn't, but that's Lovejoy's problem).

I'll stop hating Spain (ie the government, not its' people), when they stop bullying Gibraltar. However, I don't hate Catalonia as they banned bullfighting and they support the Gibraltarians as La Linea does.

    Understand?

“You better swallow your anger. Madrid is going to do it”

Did you mean 'Madrid 'is' going to do it' or ' Madrid 'has a good chance 'of doing it ?
