Regulating financial markets is a human rights issue, claimed Cristina Fernandez

Full article 68 comments

In her speech to the 68th United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday Argentine President Cristina Fernandez stressed that regulating the financial markets is a human rights issue and claimed that Argentina has been a repeat victim of shady financial entities such as the 'vulture funds', despite having repeatedly proved it is prepared to honour debt commitments. “We are not asking for anything, we are asking for the chance to pay.” And very soon the courts of NY may give you that chance. If they do, take it with both hands.

”They have killed more than 150,000 people and 99.9% of those people have died by conventional weapons, not chemical weapons.” The disappeared weren’t killed by chemical weapons so, when you look at it, its ok really.

“of those who bought bonds at knockdown prices”

And why would the bonds be at knockdown prices? Might it be something to do with the -60% rate of return?

“ we are asking for the chance to pay”

But only those creditors who've agreed to accept us ripping them off blind.

The UN was not established for the purpose of recalcitrant debtors to come begging cap in hand, for preferential treatment on their debts.

    @13 Gonzo22

Did he also teach you how to live without healthcare, schools, infrastructure, electricity, and security?

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Everybody has to pay at some point. When it becomes a whole country that refuses to pay, then they end up in the same state as Argentina.

A country that has HUGE and VAST natural resources, that if properly managed would make Argentina one of the richest countries on earth, who could afford to have low taxes.

But what is Argentina? A badly mismanaged country, full of corruption, which implodes every decade, leaving the poor poorer, and the middle classes worse off.

Your infrastructure is crumbling. Your government is corrupt and has chased away foreign investment that could actually save you.

And all you can do is stand aside and applaud them for doing it.

You will pay for this, and so will your children and your children's children. All because you wanted something for nothing.

The world should make an example of Argentina and refuse to help you any more. You have shown yourselves to be a corrupt ungrateful nation and liars. You gladly accepted money from others, aggreeing to all of the conditions of the loans, knowing that you would renege on the agreements and wouldn't pay it back. That is stealing and it is a crime.

And on top of all this you cry out that you are the victims. Well you are not victims. I have no sympathy for you.

This looming default will really hurt you. Last time you defaulted on foreigners. This time you are defaulting on your own people. Soon there won't be enough money to buy fuel to keep the lights on. Soon there will be food shortages and riots.

Maybe one day, Argentina will remove these gangsters and vote in decent honest people, who ACTUALLY have the concerns of the people at heart. But there is no quick fix. No magic solution.

Fixing Argentina will take a lot or hardwork and sacrifice. But the truth is that the Argentine peope aren't prepared to work for a better life.

I have to admit that I was quite sceptical when Elaine said the other day that even hardline Ks are starting to complain and realise that there is something seriously wrong with the current situation. However, it does seem to be true. My mother-in-law earns the same amount now as she did when Menem was in power. That was 6 years after she started working and 20 years later she is earning the same but with 30% inflation to contend with. This is someone who doesn't mind sacrificing some of their pay packet to help those worse off but now she sees that nothing sustainable has happened. I've tried to tell her that there is another way, that the country doesn't have to be run like this and that it is highly educated people like her who can change things by voting another way or educating those around them so that they can see what an empty promise looks like, so that they can understand when policies aren't sustainable and so they know what an inflated economy looks like. However, life is hard, she works all hours God gives her to look after her family and provide, she has to contend with all of the crap that everyday Argentina throws at her and she just doesn't have the energy to go out and demand change. She doesn’t want to vote PRO as she has a social conscience but she feels that a vote for a smaller party is a wasted vote. I drew a graph for her of the increase in earnings and earning power of a similar person in the UK to Argentina in the last 26 years and she just looked at it and shook her head in disbelief. When this crash happens, it is decent people like her who will be destroyed and for what? So that the corrupt people in power can just get richer.

    20. A Dictator like Pinchot is the only solution to that mess. He needs to get rid of all the thug/ crooks and their progeny, repatriate all of the wealth they have stolen, enforce laws, make people work and pay taxes. He needs to be in power for at least 30 yrs to fix it.
Mark my words even if the gov't changes the plight of the Rgs will remain the same.
Corruption is ingrained into their very being and it will take a lot of “re-education” to force it out of the society once and for all.

    @11, 13. Gonzo is a muppet! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonzo_the_Great
This is a new incarnation, best known as Gonzo the Grate.

If “having a home, job, hope and dignity are fundamental rights”, why does she want to deny these “rights” to the Falkland Islanders?

“We have been serial victims of lobbyists, of vulture funds, of those who bought bonds at knockdown prices, and that is the story of Argentina; but in a short time, it could be the story of any other country,” This IS a problem. It can be countered. A first step is to be honest. Examples can be found by not trying to steal territory that belongs to someone else, not selling bonds that you have no intention of repaying, not “restructuring” a debt without negotiation, not prevaricating over repayment. Isn't not repaying debts because you're a state a “human rights” issue?

“We are not asking for anything, we are asking for the chance to pay. It seems absurd that we are not allowed to pay in a world falling apart, in a devastated Europe. Unless they want to punish us”. Go on then, pay. As a matter of interest, why are you in court in New York trying to avoid paying? As a further matter, as you like rabbiting about 40 non-binding UN resolutions, how many court judgements are there, around the world, that argieland refuses to comply with. There are over 100 in the United States alone.

“Stressing the lack of action from the Security Council to reach a political settlement to the Syria crisis, Cristina Fernandez mentioned that Argentina held the Council’s rotating presidency during the month of August.” And did nothing of significance. Who got in the way of a settlement? China and Russia.

“........Cristina Fernandez said she proposed reforming the 15-member body so that its decisions would be taken by consensus without the possibility of a veto, as it is done with success in several regional multilateral organizations.” Go on then. Let's see you persuade China and Russia to give up their veto.

Pinochet was just as corrupt - more so in fact - than the Kirchner's. He had tens of millions of U.S.$ at his disposal in dozens of bank accounts as well as the usual organised crime methods of moving and concealing large amounts of mullah.

It's a moot point of course. The chances of such a dictator attaining power in Argentina is roughly equivalent to the chances of Chavez rising from the dead.

@26 Do you have data on CFK's overseas bank accounts? How about what is in “the vaults”?

How many “decrees” has CFK issued? She has/had a majority in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. She could do anything she wanted. And she did. She IS a dictator. Tell us how she sits down and discusses things with “the people”. How she's always happy to take, and answer, questions from the press and public.

And I thought Chavez had risen from the dead. As a little bird that talks to a bus driver.

Seems to me that argies and venezuelans are equally brainless. And the infection is spreading into uruguay and brazil. Uruguay is nearly halfway there as it has a president who is a “dic”. Brazil is a bit farther back. It only has “di”. In the near future, much of latam will descend further into dictatorial ineptitude. 329 supposedly intelligent people can't stop a power mad psycopath destroying a country?

    @27

Nope, I don't know how much CFK has in her bank accounts, vault(s) etc...but the general figure when this subject is raised is 20millionU.S.$. The Stolen Assets Recovery Initiative (StAR) report on Pinochet lists assets far exceeding the K's larceny.

CFK no doubt would love to be a dictator but her pretentions are not equal to her power - she has not been able to control the Supreme Court. She can't control the media despite her best efforts and she can't control the unions. She is not a dictator.

...and unless you're as loopy as Maduro you don't really believe Chavez has risen from the dead?

@31 you see, even if a non-Peronist party ever got elected they would soon be kicked out by the Peronists, who control everything, including the government, through the public employees. Remember what happened to Alfonsin? After De la Rua most people decided not to give any chance to non-Peronists since they couldn't rule over.
Non-Peronists can only be relevant if they play even dirtier than the Peronists but with all the cowards, mercenaries and idealists in charge of the non-Peronist parties that's not gonna happen any time soon. The best thing we can do for the time being is to vote for non-Peronists at least in Congress, but it won't do much.

Sadly you are wrong again, Argentina is not doing anything as noble as “sacrificing it's own well-being to teach the bankers a lesson”. If you truly believe that then you are as thick as many of the other “Argies” that talk shit on these boards.

Argentina borrowed money. It borrowed money under certain legal terms. It knew these terms, it wasn't “tricked”, lied to, or “cheated”.

Argentina could not pay back these loans. it defaulted. If you or I did that we would have every possession we own taken from us until the debt was cleared....but no!

The very “cheats” and “tricksters” you complain about, let Argentina off the VAST MAJORITY of its debt, most agreed to take a very small % of what Argentina owed the. hardly tricksters and conmen, trolley, more like charities who saved your arse.

However, a few are holding out for what is ACTUALLY owed. So, rather than being trickster and conmen, these few are just asking for what Argentina agreed to pay, and is legally obliged to pay.

Everyone knows Argentina won't pay, it's unlikely even the charitable majority will get their share...Argentina as a country is dishonest, dishonourable lying and corrupt.

You could do so much better.

Now, before you go into some rant....when has the UK ever defaulted, when have we not met every single penny owed on any bond? Never, Ever...not charitable knock %'s but the full amount legally due.

You should be ashamed, but being an Argie you are proud.

New York Judge Thomas Griesa has ruled against Argentina's request to dismiss a lawsuit over the Central Bank (BCRA), which if upheld could allow holdout creditors to seize assets belonging to the nation.
“Vulture funds” NML Capital Ltd. y EM Ltd. filed the suit over BCRA seeking to establish the entity as one and the same as the Argentine state. Attorneys asked Griesa to announce BCRA as the nation's “alter ego” and responsible for an outstanding debt payment of 2.6 billion dollars.

Not to be too much of a pedant but your definition of a mall says “containing a variety of retail stores”.

Apart from the Starbucks (ugh!) and the Sunglasses Hut, they are ALL womens clothes, plus as an afterthought on one (I think) mens clothes.

WTF is the gun shop, or the bar, or even the toy stores?

Looks a bit like an over-blown dress shop to me.

Chris he googled mall/city and came up with that link. It's not even a mall as most people think of one.
My guess is he is functionally retarded and gets to play on the computer a few hours a day.
Sometimes it is fun to play with dumb animals but not today I'm just not up to the ridiculousness of it all.

Look at level 2....Radio shack, Toys r us etc..
Gun shops....New York...waste of time the most restrictive State there is, I think...need a licence for everything....handguns etc...can't open carry.
New Yorkers need to slip over to PA to buy a handgun without a permit...on the sly!
Even Crossbow hunting is illegal in the state of New York....

Hah ha it's probably why the Mafia live and own great areas of the Poconos...
That's one place you definitely don't want to wander onto someones land....if you want to wander back off it again....as they are not likely to believe you.

    65. They are considering allowing seizure from all Arg gov't entities from ENARSA, YPF, Banco Nacion, Aerolinas and anything else they can find.
Going to be very hard for Arg to buy oil or sell grains if they can't use any of those entities for the transactions.
They better ask their buddies in Iran how its working out for them

That isn't the only story like that, based on you guy's favorite source, Brazil is a nation headed for economic disaster and social chaos.

Ok, in her personal tweets (such as they can be ascertained to be), it's obvious she's a dim spokesmodel, but the speech given here could benefit from better writers.
