In a statement released Friday afternoon, the Falkland Islands Government has said it was saddened to learn of the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela yesterday.
The statement says that Mr Mandela fought tirelessly for the ideals of freedom, unity and peace, which are values that the Falkland Islands strive to uphold.
Letters of condolence have been sent to his family in Johannesburg, and to the Government of South Africa.
Chair of the Legislative Assembly, MLA Jan Cheek says that she imagines no-one in the world could be unmoved by the death of a man who was a political giant, combined with the humour and humanity which made him one of the most charismatic men of the last century.
MLA Cheek says the Legislative Assembly joins the rest of the world in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela.
Flags at Government buildings and Government House have been flying at half-mast in Stanley.
