Falkland Islands former Governor Nigel Haywood CVO departed the Islands on Tuesday and his successor, Colin Roberts CVO, is not expected to take up his post before late April. In the interim, John Duncan OBE has been designated as acting Governor of the Falkland Islands and acting Commissioner of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands.
Mr Duncan will assume the functions of the Office of Governor after he takes the oath of allegiance and the oath of office upon his arrival in the Falklands.
Mr Duncan was appointed HM Governor of the British Virgin Islands in June 2013, a post he will take up in mid-2014. He is currently attached to the Overseas Territories Directorate of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). He was previously Deputy and then acting Head of the former South Atlantic Dependant Territories and Antarctic Department from 1996-98.
Mr Duncan said he was looking forward to his temporary position in the South Atlantic: “I am honoured to be taking on the role of acting Governor and delighted to be returning to the Falkland Islands. I look forward to renewing the links and friendships with the people of the Islands who have always had a special place in my professional career.”
