US Secretary of State, John Kerry has rejected the possibility that the Barack Obama administration would side with Argentina in the long-standing dispute with hedge funds over the defaulted bonds from the 2001/2 meltdown. Still the US official praised what he considered some “positive steps” by the Cristina Fernandez government. Read full article

    Oh dear, Argies!

    We did tell you this was bound to happen though, didn't we: “the US siding with the argies” HA, HA, HA. NFChance, you still owe them US$600 million!

    I am surprised that Kerry has been so categorical.
    I would have expected him to be closer to the IMF position on this matter.

    Kerry saying: “I’ll do everything in my power to get it back, as will the State Department” is game over of Argentina. Obama's support was their only remaining lifeline.

    Argentina is being forced to the negotiating table at a time when they are trying desperately to get back in to financial markets on their own terms.
    Time to break open the piggy-bank.

    You are funny Condorito, “game over” lol.

    The USA has said the same thing for 15 years now. Empty threats from a toothless cat.

    3. I am not sure why you thought the Admin would intervene. I never thought so. This is simple NY contract law, the sovereign immunity law has nothing to do with the bond payments. It is a red herring used by the Rgs to distract from the contract law.

    I've said for a long time. Argentina will lose at SCOTUS, they will pay, all debt, interest, penalties and legal fees. There's 200+ yrs of case law proving they owe the money. I would be shocked if they won a penny of concession.

    Singer already said there will be no negotiations until verdict is reached at SCOTUS.

    CFK delayed too long cleaning up this and the IMF. They'll suffer some pain before they can come back into alignment and the good graces of the USA. Nobody cares if Argentina fails, they are not a stratigic importance to anyone nor offer the world anything it can't get somewhere else cheaper.
    They're in a tough spot all brought on by arrogance and stupidity.
    Maybe the people will learn this time.

    @3 I'm with you wondering why Kerry would make this statement. I don't think he really knows what he's talking about. His comment specifically addressed the Club of Paris negotiations. I think Kerry has confused that with the hedge fund battle going on in the Supreme Court. This man is confused on many issues. His recent veiled threats against Russia are a good example. When he ran against Dubya for Pres. in 2004, many of my friends criticized me for refusing to vote for him. I could not, however, support a candidate as clueless and confused as John Kerry and so did not vote for either brainless #1 or brainless #2. Kerry has not gotten any smarter since Obama appointed him secretary of state, so everyone here would be well advised to ignore his inane blather.

    @4 toby
    The point is that the USA has not being saying the same thing for 15 years. Media and some politicians might have given opinions, but there has been nothing as unequivocal for the administration before. Kerry has made a clear statement on the administration's position. Argentina now faces the supreme court alone.

    @5 yankee
    I was sure there would be accounting for the wider political implications and they still maybe. Kerry's statement could be intended to put pressure on Argentina to settle up out of court. The timing is right as Argentina is now frantically trying to build bridges back to the finacianal markets (much to toby's horror).

    @4 So when SCOTUS rules that “the land that time forgot” has to pay, what then? Looking at the situation, you can start with the US$6 billion you've offered. But the Club says it wants full repayment and won't accept any reduction. So you can add on another US$4 billion in interest and penalties. There, a nice round US$10 billion. And if you can afford that, you can afford the rest. Perhaps the Club could decide to say that there are numerous court judgements against argieland. It will allow argieland to pay off its Paris Club debt once all those court judgements are paid. After all, the Club wouldn't want to obstruct the judgements of courts!

    10. There are no wider political implications on this matter.
    Singer won't settle until SCOTUS rules. He knows he is going to win.
    There's not anyone who is predicting Argentina will prevail.
    Everyone is just waiting to see them fail.
    It will be interesting to see how Argentina handles the ruling.

    13. SET FOR ARGUMENT ON Monday, April 21, 2014

    This is the best place to follow SCOTUS
    http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/republic-of-argentina-v-nml-capital/

    Kerry is an idiot, no argument there but there is no reason for the US state to be involved in private contract dispute.
    This may clear up some boundaries on Sovereign Immunity discovery though. How long our arms reach and what data is actually Sovereign.

    'to pay, or no more borrowing'...

    really?

    why the largest usa economy fails to pay at least a trillon dollars every year to reduce the LARGEST DEFICIT?

    The USA continuing borrowing is the worst than the argentine debt.

    The USA goverment is reducing their military forces and funds to all departments because of low revenues.

    The best economist in the USA cannot predict when the USA will pay such 17 TRILLONS dollars DEBT.

    The USA goverment cannot find funds to pay the TWO millons long term unemployed usa citizens waiting to receive their pay check.

    The USA poor citizens are suffering. I see them every day begging for food and money.
