The Government of Gibraltar and The New Statesman launched a six-month media partnership that will see New Statesman online host a Gibraltar micro-site featuring the latest news, interviews and insight from the Rock. The partnership also includes a monthly print feature published on the last issue of every month until August 2014.

“The collaboration will keep Gibraltarian issues high on the media agenda,” the Government said in a statement.

The site features topical insight on political issues ranging from the recent tensions with Spain, to Gibraltar’s relationship with Britain and the EU, as well as economics, business, tourism and culture.

Previous partnerships between the New Statesman and Gibraltar have included three 16-page special reports on the Rock containing interviews and profiles of the territory’s influential business and political leaders.

“The Government of Gibraltar is delighted to participate in the new project undertaken with the New Statesman to create an innovative online platform aimed at improving international awareness of Gibraltar,” said Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.

“The project will undoubtedly play a major role in carrying the Gibraltar story around the world at a particularly difficult time of aggressive attempts to undermine the Gibraltarians and their economy.”

A community's press and that community's government should not mix at all.

That journal's unbiased expression is automatically compromised.

A government can publish documents and articles concerning issues wherever it wants. In this case, it is being done under the guise of “journalism”.

Will the journal be equally inclined to publish Gribraltarian issues that show Minister Picardo and his administration in a bad light?

Once a journal collaborates with a government, it might serve a useful purpose, however it is no longer a journal, but a government mouthpiece.
