Disclaimer & comment rulesDear FCO, just checking that all Mercosur countries including Argentina will be trading with the Falkland Islanders also as part of this agreement since FI come under EU rules and regs.
Mar 31st, 2014 - 08:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The final paragraph of this piece is, literally, the killer:
Mar 31st, 2014 - 08:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0“Venezuela, the fifth full member of Mercosur is not part of the negotiations since it is still in the process of adapting to the group's rules and regulations.”
I don’t suppose that “don’t kill your citizens” comes under Mercosur “rules and regulations”.
1 -Sshh- better if Cristina does not read the small print to soon! But yes she will have to review some current policies! We remember when her Customs stopped trucks from Chile transiting Argentina carrying goods to Brazil for on shipment to the Falklands.
Mar 31st, 2014 - 08:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0So TMBOA will also be signing up to trade with the Falkland Islanders as ithe islands comes under EU trafe rules. Well done Argies , at last.
Mar 31st, 2014 - 08:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0So will all the trolls here who kept insisting that Argentina should go down the isolationist route of North Korea now criticise CFK for now wanting to do more trade with those pesky EUnians?
Apr 01st, 2014 - 12:29 am - Link - Report abuse 0Or will they accept that their arguments were wrong?
It's EUians.
Apr 01st, 2014 - 02:33 am - Link - Report abuse 0But yes, I criticize any decision to promote unfair trade, since the Europeans will keep their barriers on products Mercosur produces, but want to force Mercosur to drop tariffs on products they produce.
If you don't see the inherent unfairness there, and the fact that it will send (at least Argentina) into economic disaster then that is not Argentina's problem nor mine.
In_the_Trolldrums,
Apr 01st, 2014 - 05:17 am - Link - Report abuse 0It is not EUians either.
So you are saying that CFK is wrong to do what she's done. Glad you've cleared that up. Are you prepared for your visit from AFIP?
I don't see anything unfair in trade. A sale is made for an agreed price. If the seller doesn't like the price they don't have to sell. If the buyer doesn't like the price they don't have to buy.
It's only unfair if either the buyer takes the goods and doesn't pay or the seller takes the money and doesn't provide the goods. But that isn't trade, it is called theft and I agee that it isn't fair.
Now, tell me why borrowing money and then refusing to pay it back isn't inherently unfair?
You are also apparently saying that trading will result in economic disaster for Argentina. This is odd logic. This is a bit like you finding yourself a bit short of money and refusing a pay rise because it will make you worse off! You'll have to explain that one.
Will your logic will say that if Argentina suffers (more) economic disaster then it is because they decided to try trading rather than they tried trading too little and too late?
Why do not we just say to those Europeans that we are not willing to share what is ours?
Apr 01st, 2014 - 11:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0Why these Europeans do not just say to us that they do not want to open their agricultural market to us and they just want to sell their mirrors and combs to get some money for food sloth and lust of his people?
I dont understand what the Europeans are hoping to sell to protectionist countries like Argentina and Brazil, but specially the first one ??
Apr 01st, 2014 - 12:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0If this deal gives a chance and a opportunity for alternative and regional economies of Argentina like wool, wines, honey, olives, fishfarming, camelids, etc it would be great for Argentina in many of the out of the Pampas regions, the Europeans are the only ones who have the purchising power for this kind of stuff but these low investment activities when they become profitable they end up being busted by the greedy Argentine politicians.
Whenever they see something profitable the tax office of Etchegaray is there. Everything that takes years of work, good administration and intelligence can be destroyed in a couple of hours by a decree in Argentina.
The only guys who will get a good deal of this are Molino Cañuelas, AGD, Arcor and maybe Serenisima and SanCor because they are big enough and control the local market and have power over the politicians.
They've been working on this for about as long as Toby has been alive. My guess is he'll be dead before it ever comes to fruition.
Apr 01st, 2014 - 12:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Let's just get out of this. Argieland is on another scam. No way it could go from being well short of the tariff reductions required to 90% tariff reductions. And we're talking about a country that even lies to itself. What mechanisms will there be to ensure argieland pays? Not eventually, but when due. What mechanisms will there be to ensure argieland sells quality goods instead of its usual crap?

Will the EU consider media censorship when doing business with Mercosur?
Ok, Vzla is not in the game now, but if the EU signs up then it will be in the future....

Is this what CFK stated in 2012,
Apr 01st, 2014 - 06:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0we will exchange tariff-reduction proposals with EU next June...lol
Lol
Apr 02nd, 2014 - 12:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0'Venezuela ... is not part of the negotiations since it is still in the process of adapting to the group's rules and regulations'.
Apr 03rd, 2014 - 10:14 am - Link - Report abuse 0The first thing VE did - and continues to do - is to CHANGE Mercosur;
to make it the Bloc a 'Bolivarian' political-economy where political stance out-votes sensible macro-economic practices.
No, Venezuela is changing the very nature of Mercosur, not adapting to its rules.
In this it is being aided and abetted by the left-wing political classes of the other member countries.
The EU should stir it into action with a very long pointy-stick, preferably one with a prong at the end to impale the Mercosur countries to their agreements. Because you can be damned sure that the snakes in Mercosur's political economy will find every way possible to wriggle out of contracts and trade agreements whenever it suits them.
