Commemorative events to mark the centenary of the Battles of Coronel and the Falklands were brought to the table by the Falkland Islands 1914 committee. Chair of the committee MLA Phyl Rendell said the committee split into two working groups last year to organize the schedule of events and to progress the memorial wall plans. Read full article

Jun 09th, 2014 - 08:26 am - Link - Report abuse 0Funny how we commemorate victories.
Unlike other who to this day celebrate illegal invasions...
Yet claim they had nothing to do with the government who ordered the invasion.
And that they are peaceful now, btw can we remove our troops, as we are so peaceful...
yeah right

Jun 09th, 2014 - 09:18 am - Link - Report abuse 0I'm not stating it. I'm predicting Argentina will, basing my assumptions on past events.
Ah.... HMS Dragon. Now that'll get a few feathers wishing in casa rosada. What a splendid vessel to visit at this time.

Jun 09th, 2014 - 11:56 am - Link - Report abuse 0HMS Dragon? Isn't that one of the UK's 'DEATH STARS'?
@6 Do NOT forget HMS Clyde, RFA Gold Rover and HMS Protector. Clyde, the Falklands patrol vessel. Always there. Complement of 38 officers and men. The front line. RFA Gold Rover. One of the two remaining single-hulled Rover class. Manned by civilians, under naval discipline. Very brave people. HMS Protector. More courageous people. How fortunate the Falkland Islands are. So many British military and civilians. But we know you appreciate them. That's why, if you stick with your principles, we'll stick with ours. And why do I say that? Because, for me personally, Gibraltar is becoming a worry. It seems to be looking to relying on the EU. In other words, capitulation. How long after Gibraltar steps into the EU camp that the Guardia Civil and spanish army will march in, the spanish air force lands at the airport and the spanish navy docks in the harbour?
Jun 09th, 2014 - 12:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But perhaps HMS Dragon should perform a demonstration? Wouldn't that be good? Fire everything. One after the other. Target the anti-air missiles on drones. Harpoon against a barge. Ditto all the guns. Launch the helicopter(s) and watch as it/they launch anti-submarine torpedos. Bet the argies would love to see it!
@ #7. Yes, I believe Dragon is Daring's sister, which Buenos Aires got quite peeved about while on south atlantic routine patrol a year or so ago. A demostration of capability at #8 would be fantastic!

Jun 09th, 2014 - 03:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And to think we have 6 Death Stars in our arsenal!
Makes the Empire look weak in the Star Wars movies, they only managed one at a time. Added to that is that British troops tend to hit the target they're aiming at, unlike the Stormtroopers, and you've got an unbeatable team!
However, back to the thread.
This is how wars should be remembered. They shouldn't be celebrated, they should be commemorated. And commemorated by both sides.
Unfortunately Argentina is a childish country that doesn't know when enough is enough. I'd've thought that nearly 700 dead would've been enough, and that they would grow up and accept responsibility for their actions, but apparently not.
I hope all of those involved in the commemorations of the Battle of the Falklands in 1914 (regardless of which side they were on) will come together in peace and remember the sacrifices made by ordinary men for their countries.
On the aniversary Argieland have been invited to send any ARA vessel that is still capable of floating to be used as target practice. Bahahahaha.....
Jun 09th, 2014 - 04:52 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Apparently CFK wanted to counter this with a demonstration of her own mighty navy,

HMS Dragon?????
Jun 09th, 2014 - 10:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0HMS Dragon????
Oh dear, the Argentines won't like that at all....Not at all at all......
I find that a bit impossible to be honest, given that I'm pretty sure HMS Dragon is in the UK or UK waters.
Jun 10th, 2014 - 08:34 am - Link - Report abuse 0I suspect that it is frigate HMS Portland which is the current ship on South Atlantic patrol rather than HMS Dragon.
Also HMS Protector is in the Caribbean on stormwatch duties and certainly won't be there.
HMS Dragon is moored in Plymouth just now.

As the Argies are always sucking up to Caribbean countries, haven't they sent the Liberturd to assist with the storm watch duties?
