Jul 12th, 2014 - 10:56 am - Link - Report abuse 0Sick, sick, sick. Sick Note continues to swerve her duties as a President of a country in financial crisis.
Haha! The cabaret is more well known than most of the heads of state attending. How embarrassing for Putin and Dilma.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 11:41 am - Link - Report abuse 0No surprise that Sick Note Chrissie won't be there, the thought of smug Merkel grinning away would remind her of her failure on so many counts.
The comparison would be embarrassing.
...let me shorten this one to.....Argentina are going to get thrashed so I think I'll give it a miss.....
Jul 12th, 2014 - 11:58 am - Link - Report abuse 0Obviously not a footy fan.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 12:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0She's gone up in my estimation.
@3 Just to develop that a little. IF Argentina lose I think there will be trouble in the streets of Buenos Aires and Rio. CFK will be better off staying home.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 12:24 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Win or lose they get a hefty pay cheque that will help them meet their end of month payment deadline.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 12:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Either way reality will be rearing its ugly head again in Argentina. Expect more tub-thumping over the Falklands as the default distraction.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 12:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0(... see what I did there? :-))
She won't be there as FIFA told her the Malvinas banner would not be allowed at the final.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 02:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Nice photo of Shakira tho......
Jul 12th, 2014 - 03:02 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Cristina Fernandez is ALWAYS sick when an unpleasant political crisis arise, like not negotiating - negotiating - not negotiating - negotiating with the holdouts.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 03:58 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Can't face her responsibilities. Typical Argenteenage behaviour.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 04:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Amigos, I cannot blame her.
Jul 12th, 2014 - 05:13 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Can you imagine, when Germany has won by many goals, having the large screen HD camera focused upon her face for her inevitable tears and wailing ?
President Dilma would be next to her, trying to console her, wiping away the flood of all that saline and kilos of make-up. Mr.Putin nearby, trying to keep a straight face and not laugh, while the irreverent Sr. Pepe, also nearby, does the opposite, and bursts out laughing, followed in chorus by 99.99 % of the stadium.
All being uplinked then for millions of SAT television viewers around the Earth ?
Not a pretty picture.
Better not to think about it, hide in bed, and just claim pseudo-laryngitis.
What happened about the banner?

Jul 12th, 2014 - 06:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I know an investigation was started and disciplinary procedures had begun... but then it has all gone a bit quiet. Maybe they are waiting until after the final?
Very odd considering that they had to reach a decision on Suarez before his next match!?
@ 14
Jul 12th, 2014 - 09:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0FIFa is in no hurry as the banner is not enough to exclude the team from the WC.
The Suárez violation is different, biting opponents is not part of the FIFA rules of the game :-)
@15
Jul 12th, 2014 - 11:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0cheers! Maybe that explains the delay...
I feel so sorry for Brazil...the Dutch could have let them win....coming third means nothing...but at least Brazil could have saved face with a win.....
Jul 12th, 2014 - 11:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 0...yes, national and political public stature before sport.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 12:42 am - Link - Report abuse 0Sorry for Brazil, but their noses will just have be out of joint.
Can't have them getting as arrogant as number 2, Argentina .
Time for Brazil to have a serious rethink.

Listening to various football pundits over here, they all seem to back Argentina to win. The general thoughts are that it will be a close game but Messi will swing it the Argentine way.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 11:27 am - Link - Report abuse 0CFK could be missing out on a glory moment.
Who remembers how TB used to have his picture taken with winners? Any success and he would be there to soak up some of the glory. It worked for him for more than a decade.
I remember Toothy Blair smarming about doing his Cool Britania shtick. .... had a lot of people fooled for a lot of the time. ...

Will those American 'Vulture funds' (Condor funds) seize and sell the World Cup if Argentina win?
Jul 13th, 2014 - 02:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Don't worry FIFA, Germany have a 90 minute formality to go through.
@25 unless they can prove AFA is an alter ego of the Argentinian gov't, nope
Jul 13th, 2014 - 03:48 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@ 26 Well there is a lot of Mussolini in Argentinian politics 'tutto dentro dello Stato, nullo fuoro dello Stato”.

Jul 13th, 2014 - 09:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I remember watching a OZ v WI 20/20 world cup match at the oval in 2009. Funnily enough found myself rooting for the windies, rather than the convicts.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 09:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Glad Germany won, yay.
Means cannot be used to hide Argentinian economic woes.
Wot a match, ferkin great, right to the whistle, that's what a world cup final should be.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 09:45 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Congrats to Germany, commiserations to Argentina, both of you played a purler!!!
I think justice was done there. If the referee hadn't been blatantly ignoring violent conduct from the argies then they would have bettered their 1990 performance and ended the match with 8 men on the pitch.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 09:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Sickening throughout as usual. Glad Germany kept their heads and didn't rise to it.
I kinda hope that there will not be trouble in Rio and Buenos Aires. This was a tournament of great football and good atmosphere, it would be a shame if it ended badly tonight.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 09:48 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And let us not take away from the Argentines that they made the final.
I second that, despite all the pre tournament worries, Brazil can be proud of this, spectacular display of sport, be a shame if it were to be ruined.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 09:52 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Roll on the Olympics, did you see the shots of the sun setting behind the statue on the hill, how was that? not religious but man, it was beautiful!
Sepp Blatter is booed every time he appears on the screens. LOL

Jul 13th, 2014 - 10:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0That was a cracking final ....Argentina should have got a goal....I was kept on the edge of my seat....
Jul 13th, 2014 - 10:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0...and that chest to volley..class...
Look at Merkel grinning...I didn't realise she was a dwarf with terrible dress sense....
Both teams played well this final, but I don't like the result not because we lost (I didn't bet we would get that far actually) but because it was Germany AGAIN who defeated us. Don't the morons in our country get fed up we ALWAYS lose to the Germans? It also didn't help that Pachorra was a coward and used extremely defensive tactics and the idiot referee missed a blatant penalty kick.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 10:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0At least we got payback on Holland for France '98 so that's something.
I was just cooking our meal when all hell broke out with car horns blaring, people shouting and now fireworks: so I knew the argies had lost!
Jul 13th, 2014 - 10:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Ha, ha, ha, there WILL be tears before bedtime in The Dark Country tonight.

Damn I wish I was in Berlin tonight, be some party!

Prost!

Jul 13th, 2014 - 10:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Germans have being working very hard at the Bundesliga levels and national team levels to be the power they are today. ArgenFIFA started its World Cup on Wednesday and it has finished today, thanks to Grondona and Blatter.
(Messi Golden Ball....WTF???)
I've never seen Argentina look so much like Italy and its anti-football scheme like this World Cup.
Argentina and Brazil are going for a long decline from now on. Argentina has no more Sub 20s that win and gain expiriance as they used to under Pekerman and all the historic players like Mascherano, Messi, Higuain, Tevez, are going to be to old next time round. I think we are heading for long years of European football dominance.
My wife was rooting for Argentina, and changes her tune after 30 minutes, hey, those guys play really dirty!
Jul 13th, 2014 - 11:03 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Not so sure, 4 years is a long time in football. Look at Spain? Who could have predicted that they would have gone out in the first round?
Jul 13th, 2014 - 11:06 pm - Link - Report abuse 0People are commentating that this was one of the best tournaments ever.
One thing is for sure, Russia are never going to be able to match Brazil for a venue!
Is Miss tempest the same Arg- Italian lady you met in a pub??
Jul 13th, 2014 - 11:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0People keep saying on here how beautiful Argentine women are.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 11:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Well from what I saw of the girls in the Argentine stands, they were right.
Make love, not war!
I think you will find, there will not be a shortage of volunteers!!!
49. Its that I dont see Argentina and Brazil recovering any time soon. I think Colombia and Chile have space to grow. (More Colombia than Chile)
Jul 13th, 2014 - 11:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Agree.
Jul 13th, 2014 - 11:44 pm - Link - Report abuse 0We are use to seeing the performances of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, but for sure, the other SA sides really acquitted themselves well in the tournament, I really enjoyed watching them.
I wonder if it is because more of them are playing in foreign leagues?
I think this one of the best tournaments we have seen for a long, long time.

Jul 14th, 2014 - 12:15 am - Link - Report abuse 0I think a handful of European teams who are in a generational transition like Holland, Italy but most of all France which will be a formidable team are going to be the ones that most do well next time.
Having to many players in foreign leagues tends to be a double edge sword in my opinion, but I think Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, USA have done well this WC because it was played in the Americas.
IMO this cup was proof that the CONMEBOL and CONCACAF should join in the qualifiers for a single American qualifier and have more of North American teams play the South American teams and maybe take a venue out like the one Ecuador-Paraguay-Chile- Peru and Colombia always compete for or Costa Rica- Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago always compete for . It will make things more competitive in the Americas and have more surprise casualties like Mexico, USA or Brazil or Argentina. And then you can add another venue for a african team in the World Cup.
I believe that would be cool
@5 and @36 ElaineB,
Jul 14th, 2014 - 03:23 am - Link - Report abuse 0Sadly, there was indeed violence in BA. However, it seemed to be organised with political banners and a van of an anti-K TV station was attacked. :-(
As a friend in BA said the saddest world cup match going on here now in Buenos Aires: Argentina vs. Argentina.

Jul 14th, 2014 - 03:33 am - Link - Report abuse 0Is Miss tempest the same Arg- Italian lady you met in a pub??
Lol,
I'm surprised anyone remembers that, CD.
Miss Arg - Italian was particularly lovely and delightful, but no.
However, Miss Tempest, though a different ethnicity, is quite lovely. herself!
My wife has a Peruvian friend with an Argentine father - lots of excitement about Argentina in the Final.
Regardless, great game, a real nail- biter!!
@53 Yes, a friend of mine was robbed on her way home after fleeing the violence. One of her friends said some of them causing the trouble work for 'Christina's Army” but this is third hand information. The police were quick to move in with tear gas and start arresting people. Such a shame, there were families there.
Jul 14th, 2014 - 06:48 am - Link - Report abuse 0Game was closer than I had expected, which is to Argentina's credit. Aguero was a bit lucky to stay on though I'm glad he did, he has an excellent reputation in the UK as an honest player, staying on his feet.
Jul 14th, 2014 - 12:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0CD2, I think all of the (N., C. and S.) American teams did well and deserved their places whereas the African sides were mostly poor (Algeria aside), so they would need to be getting a couple of teams to the quarter finals each time to justfy an extra place - in my view.
With Spain, Portugal, Italy and England all failing to get out of their groups it was an opportunity for a much more open WC (like 2002) but in the end it reverted to the norm with no surprise teams in the semis. Very enjoyable overall though.
