Falkland Island lawmakers, MLAs, Barry Elsby and Phyl Rendell have been attending the 60th annual meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference in Yaounde, Cameroon. CPA is made up of Parliamentarians from 53 democratic countries with 188 branches in 9 Regions across the world.
The aim of the CPA is to help support democracy and good governance for all member countries. As well as annual meetings for Parliamentarians the CPA also holds an annual Youth Parliament to which the Falkland Island sends young Islanders who have an interest in Politics.
In February 2013, the Falkland Island Government hosted a week long meeting for countries in the British and Mediterranean region. The theme was Self Determination and its role in Self Governance and Devolution and it was a huge success.
At the annual conference of the whole CPA in South Africa in September 2013, MLA Elsby tabled a motion seeking support and recognition of the results of the referendum, in which 92% of the electorate voted and of those 99.8% voted to remain as a British Overseas Territory.
There was unanimous support from all countries of the CPA, recognising the referendum as free and fair and being a true reflection of the wishes of the Falkland Islanders.
At this year's conference in Yaounde there was again tremendous support for the Falkland Islands.
Both MLAs took an active part in discussions related to strengthening democracy and good governance as well as problems particular to Small States.
MLA Phyl Rendell addressed the conference emphasizing the value of education in helping to strengthen Small States' economies following on the Falklands' experience.
I stressed that in addition to funding access to higher education courses and vocational training, governments need to encourage teaching of entrepreneurialism in schools, as young people are needed to run successful businesses in their respective countries, pointed out MLA Rendell who has a long expertise in the subject since she run the Falklands' Education department for many years, helping to set up the very successful scheme for the Islands.
MLA Rendell made it a point to refer to gender affairs by pointing out that ”this (education funding and entrepreneurism) applies to women in particular in some parts of the Commonwealth”.
The motion was supported by all countries present at the conference.
