Timerman thinks this is an excellent idea and has now proposed they send Alicia Castro.

Castro would go down well in the Globe Tavern on any night; but Mujica is 4 decades behind. The Argies missed a strategic game option during the 70's and Mujica's play at catch up is similiary passed its expiry date! We've all moved on, thats the reality.

“when your recover the Malvinas, then you'll have to deal with us, because originally during the Spanish empire, the Islands depended from the naval stockade in Montevideo, under direct command from the king in Spain, not from Buenos Aires. They didn't trust you”.
    Untrustworthy then, still untrustworthy today....

”Castro would go down well in the Globe Tavern on any night;'... what , you want somewhere to park your bike?

Going by the last census data 46% of the population of the Falkland Islands is (or at least was in 2012) married and another 11% is cohabiting.

I can't see the wives and girlfriends of these Falkland Islanders being exactly overjoyed at this latest and most cunning of plans. Besides which, going by the referendum results (where the total votes against the status quo was only a small fraction of the population who were born in Argentina), there's a good chance of the women who manage to escape to the Falkland Islands “going native” anyway.

Maybe he's just demob happy, or maybe it's a case of in vino veritas, or maybe he's been smoking something, but he's blurted some nice home truths to Argentina there, and shown the true extent of Mercosur solidarity over Malvinismo.

Immensely hilarious! What century is Mujica living in? 'Mattresses and blankets' indeed. In a population of less than 3,000, I can't see any undue argie influence going unnoticed. At least argie women will be accustomed to giving change! And being 'shared' around. Per 'Rufus', how many argie women will find themselves in Falkland Sound? And this is what has the support of 64% of Uruguayans? Any Uruguayans want to look up the Battle of the River Plate? Uruguayans had a front seat on how the British defeat totalitarianism. The nazis were properly scared of democratic people. Banners, flags, marches and rallies. The nazis tried them all. Still, if the argies want to send their whores as well.........! Still, the (male) Falklands teenagers should be happy. Learn to shag with no comebacks. Because the slag will get deported! After 'servicing' all the boys!

An interesting proposal - Mujica is almost suggesting friendly relations with the Falkland Islanders. Creating links and making them feel part of the community.

A shame that he has to spoil it by repeating the lie that Argentina can “recover” the Islands. This is impossible - you can't recover what wasn't yours to begin with.

I think it is a systemic belief in the heads of South Americans that the Falkland Islands are just sat there waiting to be taken and ripe for the picking, all they have to do is find the right bait or enticement.
We need to give these people a shot across the bows and let them have a small taste of what they will get if they try anything stupid again. Memories are starting to fade and they are taking our good nature for granted.

Why the request to point out the completely obvious?
Some things don't need comment or analysis.
However, here is my take on it, as you asked...

The man is a silly old fool, who is having his little jokes at the expense of Argentina. The fact that some of these jokes are in poor taste is only to be expected of him. Another dinosaur on his way to extinction is nothing about which to become overwrought.
He is clearly teasing Argentina. The Falkland Islands are merely the instrument with which to provoke them. The macho insults are merely generic to his cultural heritage.
If anyone should be offended, it should be the Argentines, as it was to them the barbs were intended.

The irony is that prior to the 1982 invasion as pointed out in the article this was probably the most realistic way for the Falklands to become part of Argentina.

The UK had lost interest and the Home Office were actively pushing for the Islands to look towards South America. Argentina was increasing its links and the Islands were increasingly reliant on them for a number of services including the airport.

Argentina had asked to set up a navy base, if that had happened rather then the invasion the process of assimilation would only of sped up. A navy base means accommodation for single personel male and female as well as families moving in for those who were already married.

No doubt that would of led to an increase in intermarriage as well as Argentine Children going to the local school. Thirty years down the line you would have a sizeable Falkland/Argentine mixed community.

Argentina invaded and shot themselves in the foot with that idea....

@26 Z-ville “ Is this one of those “so dumb and idiotic that it might actually work” sort of idea?”

As something of a fan of old horror B-movies it's possible to grade things on a quality scale:

    Good
    Bad
So Bad that it's actually Good (as a comedy)
and So Bad that it actually transcends the comedic threshold and is Just Plain Bad

It's a very subjective scale, but I think as ideas go this one falls into the JPB category.

I think from personal experience Argentine women are not wooed by us Europeans, or North Americans, much less will the bucolic Falkland Islanders be able to engineer any better result.

    @25

You may be confusing “lack of interest” in women with Misogyny. Or in fact you may be suggesting just that, in which case you will find that you then are a supremacist racist for NOT having chosen an Asian or Indian woman as your wife. Indeed, your apparent championing of “passive personal choice” (in not being interested in women), as misogyny carries as a concomitant the fact that all those who did not choose a black lady/man in dating are racist, all those that did not choose a Jewish person are anti-semites, all those gay men that did not choose a woman are misogynists... and that you are probably all three for not choosing that black jewish lady from Ethiopia as your wife / partner.

So Hans Niesund is racist, anti-Semite, and misogynist. Shame on you sir.

    You are of course correct.

It is, in principle an excellent idea. Argentina has a wealth of beautiful women. I am sure that if a few hundred arrived on the islands, the young single men could indeed find them attractive. Mixed race children with an affinity to both the islands and Argentina...why not?

The reason is as you say, the islanders have a choice. The status quo...one of the highest GDP per capitas in the world, a lifestyle and freedom they value and and an excellent society.

Argentina is a failed state, riddled with corruption, crime, fascist propaganda and ghastly dishonest scum like Paulcondom.

The new inhabitants (beautiful Argentine women) would take one look at the choice and join the 99.7% first chance they got.

Essentially - the old man is spot-on.

All Argentina EVER had to do was persuade 1500 odd voting individuals that they were better off with Argentina than the UK.

And Argentina has never even TRIED.

...which says pretty much everything that needs to be said....

they've got so little faith in their own country and everything in it that they cant make Argentina look more promising than dank, dark, wet, gloomy, miserable UK, overcrowded, sewer infested seas, cold beaches and fried-mars-bar eating fatties with Pie & ale as the low-fat diet on exhibition at the end of the local Pier...

But no, they cant better that... (seriously how frikkin sad is that?)

Seriously, £1 million ahead and a free high-class call girl (or boy) and the island would've been yours 10 times over.

    what a bunch of *&&^%$£

(which just goes to prove its nothing but a useful political distraction)

I love this “new” phrase they've all learned

“”The ambassador thanked all British “members of parliament, unions and organizations that support Argentina’s call for dialogue and a peaceful and definitive solution to the controversy.”“”“

Its a thank-you to nobody, for nothing, yet it makes out that they just thanked ”all” their supporters.

(of whom, there may be none)

Probably plays out well in Argentina.

    80. But Galtieri's ultimate objective was domestic, not the conquest of the Falklands in 1982 per se.

He certainly did not wish to break up the Argentine alliance with Washington and end up pandering to the Soviets & Cubans. It's obvious he was counting on a bluff and that Margaret Thatcher would be called off by Reagan as the US had called out Britain, France and Israel during the Suez crisis. And there is massive historical evidence to support this.

Now that is completely different if the objective where to have actually taken over the islands back in those years. It would have just taken a mixture of bribery, increasing economic dependency, immigration, Argentine women, purcheses, grant islanders offices in the government like Romans used to do and so on.

@82 I really don't agree. There is considerable testimony from Argentine military officers that Galtieri was intent on taking the Falklands before moving on to Chile. I am sure it was for domestic distraction but that was still his intention. I also believe he hoped to exploit the relationship with the U.S. as Reagan did, indeed, try to talk Thatcher out of defending the Island. She was not easily 'bought' and Reagan resorted to begging her to leave the Argentines with a little dignity by not attacking the mainland.

I think you are overestimating the ability of Argentine women. :)

For starters Galtieri came from a very pro western side of the military. It was the Navy officers that conditioned his leadership when they toppled Viola under the promise of a land invasion of the islands (1982 J.B Yofre, 2011) when he became president... But that is different from actually going to war with Britain.

He counted on the three premises.
    a) Britain would not react,
    b) After long negotiations the UN, IS pressure an agreement of transfer would take place i.e lease back
    c) Reagan would call off a military confrontation.

Yes Chile would have being the larger piece of the pie, but that was known ever since the Beagle crisis, so no breaking news there. Its not that it was first step Falklands, then step 2 Chile

From my experience Anglo women weigh on average 70 kilos standing 160cm, have large but either fake and bouncing or real and sagging glerbs, and like all anglos their skin is so thick in oil you could wipe their face clean and then run your car with the collected material. Those that don't wash develop massive outbreaks of acne or a unique Anglo malady called “rosacea”. I've seen pictures of this condition and never seen it on argentines. Only on anglo tourists.

    It was indeed openly discussed.

In 1982 we owned a large C-band sat dish (5M) which could pick up new and non-encrypted programs in Brasil. This included news from LATAM and Africa that was either uplinked to North America, or downlinked to O Globo and other stations. The stations would take the raw feed, perhaps with or without a commentator from the country sending the footage, and between the recordings, both would chat back and forth explaining things to add a little colour to the newsfeed.

One evening at about 8, one of the Argentine newsmen blurted this out on a C-Band Sat uplink when the war over the islands began. Big Argentine of German decent with red-brown hair and a handlebar mustache. He was talking aggressively, pounding on the table in front of him to accentuate his points, to whomever was taking the sat news feed in North America:

“ First we will ”recover“ the islands, and then we will address ”what is ours “ in the Beagle Channel. ”

Confident yes, but typically block-headed. Didn't work out that way then, and it won't work that way again today.

Unless of course the plan is to distract the citizens yet again.

Unfortunately for Mujica and Argentina, who think the Falkland Islanders are uneducated cretins, and would not actually see this coming (er what part of the Islanders are University educated in the UK do they not understand?)this scheme would backfire.

Any Argentine women would be indeed assimilated into the islands, but would prefer to become Falkland Islanders than remain Argentine citizens due to the higher standard of living and their opportunity to progress, denied to them by a bankrupt country which seems sadly destined to F U for a long time to come.

They would also be able to move to the UK .

The Argentines would never understand this:

CFK: Senoritas, now you have married the Kelpers, you can vote in their next referendum to become Argentine and make your husbands do the same.

Argentine Ladies: What? We have a much better standard of living than we could get in that shithole we left, our husbands have money, and there are no power cuts. Why would we want Argentine sovereignty when that would fuck this place up within 5 years? You Botox features, may well cherish Antonio Rivero, but we chose to emulate Antonina Roxa who started off as a female gaucho working for Vernet, and ended up owning a ranch near Stanley.

Pauly, on my recent visit to Mendoza I was shocked by the number of obese people, the gross looking women reminded me of Les Dawsons Rolly Pollys ! Many were outstandingly ugly too. Unfortunately Italy and Spain are in your genes and past about the age of 30 on a diet of high carb pasta and rice turns most Latino women into revolting fatties with hooded eyes and greasy sagging skin. In Britain and the Falkland Islands women grow old gracefully and remain attractive which is part of the reason Britain has so many enduring international singers and actresses admired everywhere. Whilst Argentina has none.

Just an observation on the beauty of Argentine women, sample size 1 (me).

I have only seen a few young Argentines and they were uninspiring but once they get to 25 or so they seem to blossom physically but are obviously insecure mentally. Otherwise, why would they keep pawing the poor sap that is paying big bucks for their upkeep? It happens nearly all the time in PdelE and makes me feel ill.

Once the women are over 50 they revert to the fashions of when they were 18, albeit with stunning figures. It is only when they turn around and you see all the mahogany coloured deeply lined faces that you realise that stunning figure belonged to an over the hill has been.

Next you see the 60 something’s in trouser suits but always with low cut blouses showing off the mahogany tan to her chest: but the tits are now flaps! Uggh.

I cannot imagine why any Islander would want any part of that scenario.

More than beauty behavior is paramount. From passive observations Anglo women (Ozzer, NorthAmoland, Great Brutain), simply have no education whatsoever on the manners of being a classy adult woman. Most dress as if they were cartoon characters: with t-shirts or tops with cartoons, a trillion colors, or the like. Something I also found bizarre is the Anglos love wearing t-shirts with ridiculous slogans like “eat my pie”, or “fuck the police”, or “bitch hit it rich” (I've seen these). I'm talking about adult men and women and they think this is appropriate. They apparently fail to realize everyone around them finds them laughable and of probably low intelligence.

Anglos, just like Slavs, and Scandinavians, also have this bizarre idea that excess drinking to the point of publicly appearing intoxicated is somehow “cool”. 99% of the people I have ever seen publicly drunk are Anglos or one of the other groups. From what I have read it is actually part of going out, so you see men and women drinking for the sake of reaching the point of behaving embarrassingly. One time I saw two American women stripping on top of their car during the wine festival. Then they asked for more wine.

Somehow Anglos think wearing a t-shirt like this:

    http://www.lookhuman.com/design/18533-the-man-the-legend

... And being publicly wasted and acting like a twat is a sign of adult deportment. The funniest thing is they think they are being considered “cool”, all argentines around them know better they are the only ones Joe Schmo on whom the joke is.

“ Why would we have a University when our Government can pay for people to attend Universities all over the world?”

It's not like any Argentine university is worth going to when you are lucky to leave being able to count to 3.

Great Universities in the UK and great football clubs-that's why people from the South Atlantic region like to visit the UK, the Islanders to study in our unis and great Argentine players to play in the UK, rather than stay in Argentina.

I mean, how much money would Di Maria earn in Argentina?

Just one recent example that, in my humble opinion has been a double win for Argentina...:
The blocking of the Gripen Fighters sales to Argentina by the Engrish lobby....

Firstly, as an Anti Militarist, I'm grateful that stupid contract was killed by the Engrish...
Secondly, the 30% Engrish participation in the Gripen Fighter project means that the 2,500,000,000€uros cancelled contract with Argentina has costed the Engrish economy some ..... 750 million €uros.

    Think-Turnip

    “MP spinning the story... ?”

“... changing Past tense to Present tense..?”

MP writes very few stories and usually about local events - the other material they source from others.

    In this case Filmus

Pepe's statements in this article, are direct quotes - tense intact.

Your “ translation” is mere paraphrasing, put into the Past Tense.

I do not speak Spanish, nor is this audience meant to - it's an English-Only forum, ergo the story was translated.

Given your own record of “spinning”, omitting, fabricating, misleading, and lying, I am more likely to believe this story was faithfully reproduced by MP, rather than you, Turnip.

For a President of a country to make these statements publicly to the media, is outrageous, regardless of his private thoughts.

For you to disregard that issue, and focus on trying to say he message was subtly “spun” by the news site, reveals that you hold the same values and are equally clueless as to how dehumanising and degrading it is towards women, and how demeaning it is towards Argentine women in particular.

As a “proud Argentine”, and an “enlightened progressive Thinker”, you should have been outraged - you weren't.

Same goes for Pablo Narcissis CabanaBoy.

Nice attempt at Gripen-related distraction, but Muijica's remarks are as pertinent today as they would have been if he'd made them forty years ago. There is no better guarantor of the Falklands' current status than Argentina's sense of grievance, couple with an inflated view of its own influence and its inability to grasp the political context in the UK. The K's in this respect are even dumber than the junta was, at least the junta didn't have such a glaring precedent before it.

The point being, Pepe was/is teasing the Argentinos. He is taking the piss. He is also insulting their sense of machismo whilst expressing his own.
He said 'football and pretty Argentinas would work better than your crap military'.
He is just being a mischevious old dog, enjoying his fading limelight. He knows he is in a position to insult Argentina and no one will say anything.
