Argentine prosecutor Viviana Fein confirmed that there was no sign of a third-party being involved in the death of AMIA investigator Alberto Nisman, who was found early Monday morning with a gunshot to the head. However the official refused to rule out the possibility that the deceased was obliged to take his own life by some as yet unknown factor. Read full article

Last night on Argentine TV they showed the floor plan of the apartment and how a service elevator could be used to access the apartment bypassing the locked door. Also, the main elevator does not have a security camera. The people on the program were not accepting that it was a suicide either.

A .22 is an odd choice of weapon for a suicide . It's a very light calibre and often non fatal .
Most handgun suicides are pointed at the temple or at the top of the mouth .
The shot was 2cm behind the right ear , the trademark of a professional hit .
Bet it also turns out Nisman was left handed .....

“ In a statement, the official in charge of the investigation into Nisman's passing affirmed that the head of the judicial morgue had told her that “there was no intervention from third parties in the death.””

How the hell was that determination made? Have they never seen the film “Shooter” where a machine was fixed to the victim and 'operated' by him using a pulley system, the cord of which the assasin controlled, thus maintaining fingerprint and gunshot residue?

A 0.22lr rf is an unusual choice for self protection but the soft lead bullet is so underpowered it does not escape the skull but bounces around inside the cavity doing untold harm to the brain. That plus low noise is why they are favoured by gangsters.

Other things are bound to come out: they always do. I wonder if the assasin is also dead?

The IRA killed people with what they called an OBE. One Behind the Ear.

It will be a solid, clear statement on Argentina's government how they handle this.
Sadly we probably all know what the answer is likely to be regardless of the evidence.

The parietal lobe is toward the top of the skull. Supporting the mention made yesterday that the shot was above and behind the ear.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parietal_lobe
But it has to be an awkward location for someone to shoot at themselves. As Usurping Pirate says, the temple or the roof of the mouth would be more usual. However, if someone were to put the gun in Nisman's hand and pull back from behind whilst maintaining control, the position seems more plausible. Could someone have forced Nisman's finger against the trigger?

That's exactly what I said elsewhere. Behind the ear is not a suicide shot, it's a “3rd party” shot. Temple and mouth are typical suicide shots. A .22 no less.....low velocity and likely not to exit and remain in the head.

There was hardly no gunpowder traces on him either

His family says that he did not commit suicide. Friends and associates report that Nisman was upbeat about testifying Monday. Canal 26 Noticias has been almost nonstop this morning reporting all the details of the investigation and speculating about all the evidence collected by Nisman.

    Thanks CD.
In the Chilean press today, there is a lot being reported about the scandal on the front pages. Jorge Lanata, an Argentine investigative reporter, is quoted that this was not the first time that an individual was killed by “suicide” in Argentina. The method was used in the past by the SIDE to eliminate witnesses.

The general air on the Buenos Aires Herald seems to be that CFK ordered it.

Perhaps she just muttered “Will no one rid me of this turbulent prosecutor?”.

“She explained that the with .22 caliber fire arms, as the one used in Nisman’s death, “usually do not deliver positive results” for gunpowder traces in forensic analysis.”

This is true for closed breech firearms where the gases cannot easily escape the breech unless the firearm is worn out.

All current BERSA 0.22rf lr pistols are semi-automatic and none can be locked on firing, or fired single shot without the breech opening thus allowing all the gases still the behind the bullet while it passes up the bore to escape towards the firer. Once the bullet has left the barrel no more gases can escape due to the collapse in bore pressure.

Therefore there WILL be GSR (gunshot residue) on the firing hand and how much is found depends primarily on two things:

    1) the type of priming used in the rim of the fired cartridge: the IMI wet system is the cleanest and safest (it’s wet at application in the rim) and is used in all European manufactured ammunition; the old compounds which used to regularly result in explosions in the factory (and are gradually being replaced with the ICI system) being the dirtiest.

    2) the technical competence of those seeking to find the GSR on the shooter.

Frankly, I do not think that this woman is telling the truth if the people seeking the GSR are competent there HAS to be GSR with this pistol.

Of course, if someone else shot him, then there would not be any GSR on the victim’s hand.

This is fact, not an opinion.

Even with a closed breech, there is gas escaping the muzzle. And, the the barrel to one's head and your hand inches away, there will be some GSR on the hand. And as Chris said.....if a good team of forensics are looking for GSR on a body, they will find it no matter how small.

Still it would be extremely hard to plant the body in that bathroom and exit with his body leaning against the door.
Head shots bleed a lot as the heart is still beating for a while although a .22 doesn't leave much of a hole.
I would investigate all contact he had 8 hours before his death. He know something was up.

I know someone that was shot in the head with a 22 short and did not penetrate the skull. Traveled between the scalp and skull and exited on the back of the head. Bullets do weird things.
    Did you that bathroom?

@17 the angle of shot must have been at an extremely high angle not to penetrate.
A .22 is a very effective caliber for killing at short range.

It was definitely a murder, not suicide. Journalists close to the government hinted on Saturday that Nisman was dead, and Alex Freyre, a pro-government journalist said “I told ya”. They pretty much admitted they got rid of Nisman.
The government will certainly get away with this, the opposition will try to capitalize on this for their political campaign while doing nothing at all to stop the government, this will ultimately backfire.

    @ 19 Chicureo

I read your link with interest, especially some of the comments which seem to have been infiltrated by a lover of TMBOA tagged on Fb as ‘CEO Hipster’.

This guy appears to know nothing about firearms or GSR chemistry although he claims that ‘it is like flour, disappears in 4 – 6 hours and can be wiped off the hands without trace’.

Some propellants do seem flour like on the skin but leave significant chemical residue in the first few microns of the surface of the skin which competent forensic analysts can extract it without problems.

So lies like this seem to help fuel the claim by the K’s that Nisman killed himself.

    As if.
