He also funded the construction of several units of sheltered accommodation for the elderly, for which he is probably best known here.

A great friend to the Falkland Islands.

He described his recreations as “keeping all things bright, beautiful and British”

Sounds like he was one hell of a guy.

    Rest easy now.

I was lucky to know him personally for a while- A great guy - started life on pig farm as his first job - collecting the swill(waste food) from RAF bases nearby!
A guy who started at the bottom and worked damn hard for what he achieved.
The Old Folks sheltered accommodation - correct - and when he visited as a guest for the 1992 Anniversaries he went there and found the old folks could not see out as the windows were high up - he asked for them to be lowered to chair height- the Director of Works said he would get a quotation and send it to Sir Jack - who replied - “I don't want a quotation - just do it and send me the bill - get on with it”!

@7 Fantastic guy and what a concept that those Old Folks sheltered accommodation back on to the hospital, so they can get help, yet have that fantastic view and some independence.
