I fully support the return of he Chaggosians.

Please form an orderly queue if:

    1) you were forcibly evicted
    2) at no time since have you accepted money for full and final settlement
    3) a full and detailed plan as to how you will fund the infrastructure needed to support freshwater and food supplies.

If you meet all three requirements, the UK should drop you at an island of your choice.

Crikey - if Prescott supports them, then the Mauritians who call themselves Chagossians are in more trouble that I thought !

Now is the perfect time to charge the U.S. more rent.
Typical British politician putting foreigners ahead of the British National interest.
The sons of Prescott, Kinnock, Blair (God help us) and Straw all lined up to serve us up more of the same incompetent, self serving, rubbish.

What a load of tosh, they are not indigenous people, Without these Islands many military operations across the Middles East could not have taken place. Prescoot you muppet shut up your time is over, go to bed with a pie mate... its getting too late in the day for your BS

Not forgetting Peter Hain, from the same mould .

None of them are exactly destitute.

Yet their priorities are definitely not pro-uk or UK interests.

Perhaps “he who ate all the pies” would like to acompany the 'so called' natives when they return to the islands.

Let there be no cash alternative or UK subsidy and I will be happy.

    Shagger Prescott!

Oh, how I laughed when I saw the picture of Shagger with that trollop in his arms cradling her like a baby whale after a round of croquet at Chequers.

Now he is making himself look an even bigger cunt than he did at Kyoto by sticking his oar in again.

Well, he is a Labour moron, ex head of the sea workers or something union, so being full of shit comes naturally to him.

That statement alone shows what a prat he really is.

I've not heard that we have any intention of giving up our base there.
    Has anyone else?

@1. Nicely put. If I understand your points correctly, the top limit on those who 'might' return is some 2,000 individuals. Who left the area in a period up to 1973. That's 42 years ago. Any so-called 'chagossian' born after 1973 wouldn't be eligible. I wonder if those that 'might' return think there are shops and things? I doubt that the United States will permit access to their base facilities. How would they get the US dollars? There are 3,000 to 5,000 US troops there. Where are the so-called 'chagossians' going to live? It would be complicated by the £5 million in cash paid by the British government and the £1 million in land provided by the Mauritian government. Down to 1,419 individuals. All been paid. More than £3,500 each. Does it count if they repay the money? Updated to current values, of course. So, about £12,000 each.
@4. Quite right. There were no indigenous 'chagossians'. Africans, Indians and Malays.
@8. How dare you call him a prat? He is so much more! He's a pillock who even failed his 11-plus. He was, supposedly, the common link between the 'New' Labour Party and the peasants that supported it. The emphasis being on the word 'common'. There are still quite a few of those numpties left.
@9. A difficult situation. Is the United States given to acting illegally? Do you have information that the lease has been extended? If not, it runs out in December 2016. Such an extension needed to have been agreed by December 2014. Have you paid your additional rent? I recall that the US is planning to close a number of its 'facilities' in the UK. Does that mean we can have our airbases back? No access to Gibraltar for US vessels? No access to Cyprus? We like to think of ourselves as 'cousins'. Which is not an excuse for high-handedly screwing us.

    @10

Indeed..if you are one of the 2000 “evicted” and have never accepted full and final settlement then you should have leave to return....my guess is that half the 2000 will be dead or very aged, and most of the other half would have taken the money...so maybe 50 or so people max.

You will return with absolutely what you left with, which is precisely nothing, and be out-numbered by the personnel on the airbase and have no access to their infrastructure or fresh water.

So, a kind of Pitcairn scenario except no fresh water....good luck...if you can make a go of it.

I poked around a bit looking for base closings and DG is not on any list that i could find.
If the USA was planning on leaving it would have been announced by now and some sort of planning involved.
My guess is they're going to extend the lease.

The case for return of the people of the Chagoss Islands is extremely strong - they were kicked out without warning by the British government to make way for a US military base - so much for British national sovereignty. This is another example of a noticeable 'cultural trait' of the British political elite - the capacity to adopt a 'softer' stance on domestic and international issues once they leave office. The hypocrisy is clear as daylight since they know they views will now have minimal influence whereas, while in office, their tongues remain tied to US global policy objectives.

The EU court in Strasbourg ruled that the Diego Garcia Islands case was inadmissible because the applicants had already been granted due legal process in Britain, and had accepted financial compensation from the British government in the 1980s.

Bit more digging...apparently only 12 individuals meet my first two requirements set out in post 1).

So, of the 1100 evicted, 1098 have either accepted full and final compensation or have died.

    So just 12 individuals.

I'd say let them return....without fresh water it should be a straightforward and short lived problem

    P.s.

I doubt even these 12 wish to return.....more likely they want more Compensation!

@13. You really need to keep up and do some research. But let's go with it. £12,000 each to repay the British government. But check out @15. The British government still has to be repaid. And the price has just gone up to £667,000 each. And, as stated at 15, no fresh water. It's a marine conservation area. No fishing. No food.

“very reasonable point”, wot two shags!!!

Doesn’t explain how human habitation of the Islands has become any more sustainable in the last 50 years.

Or why Prescott didn’t do anything about this when he was deputy PM and in a position to do something.

To busy playing croquet no doubt.

At some point in the not too distant no doubt the US will move operations to higher ground somewhere else.

Apparently one of the Chagossian Islands has a high rainfall.

    @15 Monkey magic
“So just 12 individuals...I'd say let them return....without fresh water it should be a straightforward and short lived problem”

Any that were evacuated should have a chance (if practical) to live on the small island with the high rainfall.

However, if they were compensated financially for leaving that has to be taken into account.

”Speculating why the Government has been so keen to support the Falkland Islanders and so opposed to Chagossian return, Lord Prescott notes that the former are “white.”

Not all Falkland Islanders are white skinned and Prescott's evaluation is like himself -thick and moronic.

“the UK received an £11 million discount on Polaris nuclear weapons in exchange for deporting the Chagossians”

Like the Brits in Malvinas, the Chagossians were approximately 2,000 in number. Unlike the Brits in Malvinas they were dark skinned and not of British ancestry.

Colour or race do not come into it .
Take the case of Imber Village in Wiltshire : From Wiki .
Imber is an uninhabited village in part of the British Army's training grounds on the Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, England. It is situated in an isolated area of the Plain, about 2.5 miles (4 km) west of the A360 road between Tilshead and West Lavington. The entire civilian population was evicted in 1943 to provide an exercise area for American troops preparing for the invasion of Europe during the Second World War. After the war, villagers were not allowed to return to their homes. The village, which is now part of the civil parish of Heytesbury, remains under the control of the Ministry of Defence despite several attempts by former residents to return. Non-military access is limited to several open days a year.[1]
What rights do the residents of the two hydroelectric dams in Santa Cruz have ?

    Hmmm...let's see.

The case for moving the remaining 1100 inhabitants of Chagos was one of National Security. All bar 12 have received (and accepted) full and final legal settlement. The remaining 12 must be in their 60-70s by now and hardly likely to really want to resettle on islands with no infrastructure, freshwater or other inhabitants outside of a military base.

This sounds awfully like a lawyers pursuit for extra compensation.

However, there are an enormous number of reasons to keep the Falklands.

The first and most important is that there is no reason not to. legally, morally, historically the islanders can do as they please. If, for whatever reason it became urgent to use the islands for National Security, I am sure the correct discussions could be made.

A terrible reason to give up the islands would be because a third rate, lying, fascist, corrupt scumhole has spent the last 60 years lying to its schoolchildren about them....oh yes, and because it annoys Marcos.

    @ Monkeymagic
A “return” has only become the issue since more “full and final” compensation has been ruled out by the courts, all of them.

The issue is that if the British Gov agrees to, or facilitates a “return”, then they would be accepting a duty of care not to let them starve/die of thirst or get eaten by sharks.

The Falklands require only protection from the British, any settlement in the Chagos would require absolutely everything except protection.

Nothing to stop them hiring a ship to take themselves back there.

    @ 23 paulcedron
Are you arguing that the British should do more evictions i.e. the Falklands, or less i.e. the Chagos.

It’s an either or question, so if you think really hard even you should be able to come up with an answer.

    @ 31 Marcos Alejandro
Perhaps we should follow some Argentinian principles and “flying Nun” them somewhere over the Indian Ocean and call it a repatriation.

Or just have them “suicided” and claim its part of a Malvinista plot to bring down the British Gov.

Argentina’s grand strategic alliance with China, with the mutual support for each other’s ambitions of colonial expansion, cost you in S. Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines and probably Indonesia as well.
