Punta Arenas fishing industry complains of a sharp fall in catches and landings

The fishing industry in Punta Arenas, extreme south of Chile, is going through a serious recession --30% fall in landings-- which is not only impacting the activity of the four main companies, with lesser jobs, but also port operations and the price of freight as volumes are smaller, warned this week Enrique Gutierrez, General Manager of Pesca Chile.     Large factory ships with ship registries of nations like Benin and Zambia and controlled by the Chinese are criminally “vacuuming” the South Pacific waters of nearly everything. This type of illegal fishing has caused extreme damage to the fisheries and Chile needs to sink a few of these pirate vessels to get the message across.

    @1. I agree. You have a navy. British-designed and largely British-equipped. Therefore, crewed by Chileans, probably unstoppable in the South Atlantic. Tell them to get out there and do the job. First shot to destroy communications. Go on and do whatever is necessary. Many vessels are lost without trace. Think of it as target practice during an 'exercise'.
