The presidents of Argentina and Bolivia have unveiled a statue of Bolivian war of independence heroine Juana Azurduy. The 25-ton, 16-meter-high statue replaces a controversial statue of Christopher Columbus that was taken down in 2013 after ninety years. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesI always support the advancement of memorials and histories that celebrate women. However I'm always disturbed when counties also try to play down their histories - especially the unsavoury aspects - Argentina can't deny it owes its existence to Colombus.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 11:30 am - Link - Report abuse 0There's enough room in BsAs for both these statues.
Nice photo of the idiots in headdress.... A pair of putz's!!
Jul 16th, 2015 - 12:15 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Columbus statue was a gift of the italian community (paid by italian inmigrants) almost 100 years ago that was forced to me moved by the fascist concept that history must be re-write to satisfy current political needs.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 12:19 pm - Link - Report abuse 0There was plenty of room in Buenos Aires to build a new statue but the fascist government wanted to hide and to destroy the old Colñumbus statue because it represents imperialism.....
The statue was saved by the action of a the italina community and s few democratic politicina and it will be moved to a new place by the river looking to Europe.
Peronism has a peculiar and fascist way to see history. Even Wiston CHurcill has no a single mention in Buenos Aires city or in the rest of the country.
I'm surprized she didn't have a hammer and sickle in her hand.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 12:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Like the English Clock in BA now covered in grafitti by Malvinista morons. A memorial to the numbnuts of Argieland.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0There is no doubt in my mind that this is the ugliest statue I have ever seen. It's a shame because the statue of Christopher Columbus was a real work of art!!!!!
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The extirpation of all traces European and British from Argentina happily continues forward, just as I have said before.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:15 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And there is nothing Ozzer drunks who are the product of White Australia Policy can do about it.
@4
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0hammer and sickle in her hand?
She, and the whole peronist party, are fascists...they have nothing in common with socialism or comunism...
7. That statue clearly has Euro facial features.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Are you blind as well as stupid?
@9
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0We don't need your bad manners. We all know the kind of person you are.
They are quite clear trying to erase european culture and features from Argentina
Juana Azurduy Bermudez
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:54 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yeah doesn't sound like Euro roots at all
:)
Plus stylistically the statue is clearly Euro.
@11
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:57 pm - Link - Report abuse 0During colony times all the people had to adopt spanish names and surnames. At that time those who where not catholic had no rights. SO they were forced to adopt Spanish names.
Apparently her father was a rich Spaniard
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Well her father was spanish so...
Jul 16th, 2015 - 01:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0yeah
clearly euro...
I don't know Juana Azurduy history but this nazi gobernment is trying to artificially erase all the european bonds.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 02:14 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Chicuero must be happy since he always mentions that italian background and genes are a failure of mother nature.
Quick. Somebody contact the Bureau of Silly Hats.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 02:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0TTT, whilst you may wish to exhort the celebration of a woman - even though you dislike ALL women, without exception - who fought the Spanish, it is a bit of a stretch to imagine this is an attempt to wipe out all traces of Europeans. The majority of Argentines are descendants of Europeans so you would need to wipe out the majority of Argentines. You just don't think through your prejudices do you?
Jul 16th, 2015 - 03:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0She is clearly an Aussie. You can tell because she is trying to fling a boomerang.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 03:55 pm - Link - Report abuse 0#8...you didn't see the gift that the Bolivian commie gave to the Pope? They are all the same.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 04:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0#7 I imagine you are of European descent...they going to get rid of you also?
@7. The extirpation of all traces European and British from Argentina happily continues forward, just as I have said before.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 04:06 pm - Link - Report abuse 0This should be quite fun. The extirpation of the spanish language. In all its parts. Originating from Vulgar Latin (surprise), it also has roots in Basque, Iberian, Celtiberian and Celtic. Lovely, five different European constituents. What will you be using when you've extirpated language? Grunts? You're such a thick prick. Perhaps you can try Mapudungun. Look at those lovely argie constituents. Map (that argieland either ignores or redraws), dung (describing argies generally) and gun (a reminder of what argies have been using for 200 years to promote integration).
@10, 12. Except that she was a mestizo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juana_Azurduy_de_Padilla
Take a look at the statue and then at what I assume to be a painting. Look at that face. Last time I saw a face like that it reminded me of the Wicked Witch of the West https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juana_Azurduy_de_Padilla What a dog! Seems her husband was killed in November 1816 uttering his dying words This is so much better than marriage. In essence, her four sons suicided on the grounds that they looked like their mother and were thus unutterably ugly. Only one of her sons was a soldier. The others just couldn't stand people vomiting every time they were seen. She may have started the fashion for dogging. Get the connection? A dog starts the dogging!
If Toby were of native decent it would explain a lot of his self hatred. The indigenous of Argentina are treated like trash. I visited a Indian reservation in Iguazu and it was like going back to the 1800s. No running water, no sewage disposal, the people were wearing Tshits and shorts from the 80s donated by the USA and they were absolutely filthy, no roads, 1 little string of electricity to 1 hut, and a school provided by the Germans. The still trapped animals to eat!
Jul 16th, 2015 - 04:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It would explain why Toby is so bitter. He's been treated by euro Rgs badly his whole life.
The little self edcuation he has he thought he could use in a winery communicating with tourists and now there aren't any and he's unemployed with no hope for the future.
All understandable...
97% of the population is of European or partial European descent. So, I guess TTT could be of Arab descent (remember one of his characters?) orMestizo or Black. He did once say he is not of European heritage but then again his says all kinds of stuff he later contradicts.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 04:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The whole time I lived in Arg I saw 2 black people they sold fake gold on the streets out of a suitcase. Mestizo would still be Euro. Even the Arabs there are mixed with Euro so unless he a pure bred native (very rare) he's self hating.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 04:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Which I think he is...
I've been on the reserves many times in Iguazu. However I found that they are quite happy the way they life and would prefer no interference. I think Tobie's issue is that he is a half breed fitting into no side.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 04:48 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's funny reading her posts, Tobi that is, hating the Euro's and North Americans.......just like Kirchner whom he claims to hate. Yet with all this hatred.......they want the Anglo oil money for drilling and to be able to sell to the USA and Europe.
It's funny odd when you look at all the LATAM countries and look for a common thread, does anyone beside me notice, whether it is Argentina, Spain, Cuba, Venezuela or Mexico are whatever Spanish speaking country it is, that they have in common? Failure....failure to thieve.....failure to be responsible, failure to move ahead, failure to achieve success. Is it something in their genes?
Tobi....can you enlighten us? Or as a mestizo like Juana, do you not like the Spaniards as well as the Anglo?
And in the sphere of International relations, we are supposed to take these knobheads seriously.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 04:49 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Are you kidding me???
You should have seen how the chopped up the Columbus statue into little pieces and was strewn around La Casa Rosado when the courts ordered them to stop.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 05:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's been stated here numerous times that Argentina is like a teen, immature. However I beg to disagree, I find them to be more like a tween.......though definitely immature.

Poor little Tobi.....you are the most envious girl. Go home and clean up your cono......it's starting to stink.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 05:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You deep down wish you had racial prejudice, it would mean your country did not commit genocide, which the world knows that Argentina is guilty of. Also, it would mean half breeds like you might have a voice. The only thing worst than being a half breed is a half breed tranny.
No doubt TMBOA would love the statue named after her.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 07:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It would be fitting after all, her head is as dense as stone but less intelligent.
Just love the picture, I am at a loss for words.
What happened tobi....you went quiet.....yeast infection get at ya?
Jul 16th, 2015 - 07:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@27 Feeling foolish again so trying distraction?
Jul 16th, 2015 - 07:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Talking about feeling foolish, now that it's August 2015 and just as I said in Februrary 2012 that CFK would finish her term and NOT run for re-election, while all of you morons were saying she would run again, but also be toppled by a mob, how foolish are you all feeling??
Jul 16th, 2015 - 08:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@32 It is July.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 08:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 032. She tried to get the constitution changed to run for re-election but her popularity plummeted when the economy ran out of steam.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 10:19 pm - Link - Report abuse 0There's also been MASSIVE, MASSIVE protests, Rgs are lazy and weak though so they're hard to judge. It could have gone either way.
There's still time yet
:)
@34 That was probably a big mistake in her strategy. She was so convinced she would remain in power and by the time the penny dropped it was too late to groom Fat Max to take over.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 10:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Juana Azurduy Bermudez was born in 1780 (or perhaps 1781).
Jul 16th, 2015 - 11:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Her parents were Don Matías Azurduy, a rich white owner of many properties and Doña Eulalia Bermudes, a chola from Chuquisaca.
At her death she was a forgotten pauper, but about a century later she was remembered as a heroine. She was awarded the rank of general of the Argentine Army in 2009.
35. I am surprised that you give her enough credit and brains to have a strategy.
Jul 16th, 2015 - 11:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't.
She currently skwacking about Argentina's mythical growth while the world is in crisis.
I wonder what world she's talking about.
Its certainly not the world the rest of us live in
and
31 months of decreased industrial production is not growth
She's clearly delusional and I think only in Argentina would this women be running something.
Anywhere else she would have been committed to a mental institution by mow.
Hiding and denying your history doesn't change it or make it different. It just means you are lying about your heritage.
Jul 17th, 2015 - 12:13 am - Link - Report abuse 0Ignoring lessons from the past makes you more likely to repeat them.
@37 CFK knows nothing about running a country or economy successfully but she is a shrewd survivor. I don't underestimate her ruthlessness.

Which I think he is
I believe he is Jewish - doesn't consider himself part of Euro ethnicity, says he hates Asians, and Amerindians are inferior- never ever criticises Jews or Timerman.

Well educated Spaniards, and many many other modern Europeans are moving to South America looking for jobs and more opportunities.
With their better work ethic, better education, solid business experience, and business connections, they're getting all the best jobs!
Complacent, lazy, local slugs like Nostrils and Paul Cedron are being pushed aside.
By comparison, they have nothing to offer but arrogance and resentment.
It's an easy choice for employers.
No wonder Paully and Tobi are angry and xenophobic!!
Ironically, they waste their time demonising the British and Americans, when it is their ethnic 'hermanos' who are 'betraying' them!!
Chuckle chuckle.... !
