A business delegation from the Falkland Islands participated in Uruguay's main agri-business show at the Prado grounds with a stall in the British GREAT pavilion. The week attendance was described as 'surprising and successful' and Falklands lawmaker Gavin Short addressed an open letter thanking all those involved in helping with the Islands' presence. It would be very nice and useful to have a small ship doing monthly trips From Montevideo to the Falklands like in the old days, Dear friends I assure you that most Uruguayans share your dislike for the Argentinians, they have always been arrogant stupid incompetent dishonest neighbors.

Don't bother coming south, you are not wanted in Uruguay.

Next time Gavin come for longer and bring the wife and perhaps get out into the camp to see how we really live apart from the hype of the Prado. Maybe one day we will have a direct air service ????

7BM - We do indeed have a monthly direct shipping service- has been running for 6-7 yrs now -a small container ship (no passengers) which links in with international container trade.
A weekly direct airlink would be nice - but lacking the independent airline to do it. Fly out east 150 miles from Monte then turn south and you are outside the Arg Int airtraffic control zone.

BM - I agree, I am old enough to remember arriving in Montevideo on the old RMS Darwin and then catching a larger Royal Mail steamer to UK and later - by air instead. Those were happy days in Montevideo, a friendly city full of friendly people. Still the same today - was there for a few days a couple of years ago.
There is a strong desire both in Stanley and Montevideo for more links
so maybe one day they will improve.

My Father had something similar. Taught me how to skin rabbits for the pot.

I think he acquired it originally from a USAF chap after De-Mob WWII.
He treasured it and used a whet-stone to keep it sharp.
Equally, I remember my father's old Holland & Holland. I can still recall the smell of the oil he used. My lovely Cocker Spaniel bringing the Game home.
Taught me which herbs to pick from the hedgerows for Mother. Very slow-cooked. Oh the anticipation! The smell!
    ohhhh, I miss those days.....!!!!!

Islander1 I remeber the kelpers in The British School and the black Royal ships that carried cargo and a few passengers to the UK, and then brought all kind of British goods including Hereford bulls that were auctioned in a Barraca close to the docks with the buyers sitting in alfalfa bales

If it were ex USAF it could well be the standard US battle knife which was modelled on a Bowie but much smaller. Pilots of course carried a Colt JMB (John Moses Browning design) 1911A1 0.45 acp semi-auto pistol, probably the best designed auto pistol there has ever been. Many, many copies still made today.

My knife was made by a member of my family to my specification and it's a work of art and sits on it's own UYU hardwood plinth with a deer antler tip for the guard support to cradle in. It measures 40 cm from blade tip to tang tip and has a 5 mm thick brass classic shape hand guard. The blade is 7 mm thick high carbon hardened and tempered steel. At this hardness the core strength is 80 tons/sq in. I have improved the already high polish to one which gives it a superior look to hard chrome. A visitor asked if he could buy it to augment his collection of classic UYU hand knives which is impressive but I just smiled. It's a bit too big for skinning rabbits!

The Holland and Holland shotgun that your father had, do you remember if it was a “Badminton” model? It would be a sidelock, top lever side by side hammerless ejector (20, 16 or 12 bore) and finished in case hardening blue and best black to the barrels. Very light gun and much sort after.

About 30 years ago I completely refurbished one back to original specification for a very dear friend who helped me start off in “shooting” and managed to get rid of the lubricating oil from the wood and hand-oiled it with linseed to a glorious finish. My friend was in late stage cancer at the time and he had tears in his eyes when I gave it back to him. He died within the year without ever being able to shoot it again. His son still has it though he stores it on the muzzle, as he should, to avoid the action lubricating oil contaminating the stock.

The oil you remember the smell of was probably “Parker No. 1 Oil” or perhaps “Parker Express Oil”. I still have some of both. :o)

    China helps Argentina
Argentine-Chinese cooperation has led to agreements for the procurement of a new ice breaker, naval tugs and warships. The collaboration is a boost to the Argentine Navy

Has accepted the offer of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation’s P18 corvette. The more capable export version of the PLAN’s Type 056 displaces 1,800 tonnes and can be armed with up to eight anti-ship missiles, a 76mm main gun, two 30 mm cannons and two triple torpedo launchers, and can carry a medium-size helicopter.
    With deliveries starting in 2017

    On the other hand,
Death Rays Next for British Navy
The British Ministry of Defence, in an effort to become more cost-effective in warfare, has revealed plans to equip its warships with laser cannons. The Royal Navy hopes to demonstrate a functional prototype of the directed laser weapon on its ships by 2020. The ministry also aims to develop a land-based laser cannon by 2017

The royal navy will be the only country on the planet besides the US navy,
That will have this fire power.

This over reaction and utterly cheesy gratefulness is so obviously deliberate: you ARE furious over growing support Argentina's sovereignty rights over the Malvinas! Good job Argentina, UK stand at the fair was ripped off all poliitcal contents. And Uruguay will always support Argentina. Uselss stunt, almost as useless as the “referendum”!

    “Uruguay will always support Argentina”.

I beg to differ. The Uruguayan government is finding it harder and harder to keep up appearances. There is no reason for us to support Argentina, especially in view of their unfriendly, aggressive behaviour over the last few years.

    @27:
“This over reaction and utterly cheesy gratefulness is so obviously deliberate”

Or it could just be honest gratitude. Decent folks do have it from time to time.

“...you ARE furious over growing support Argentina's sovereignty rights over the Malvinas! ”

Why would be furious over support for something that doesn't exist? Argentina can claim the Falklands all they want, they'll never be able to prove their claim, hence the Malvinas Lie.

“...almost as useless as the “referendum”!”

I love how you put that in quotes as if it didn't happen or was somehow illegitimate.

It was a referendum suggested and carried out by the legitimate inhabitants of a British territory, with the approval of the legitimate holders of sovereignty over that territory. Those are facts that cannot be disputed.

You can spread the Malvinas Lie all you wish, and even lie and call the referendum illegitimate. But for all your claims, there are two things Argentina will *never* be able to truthfully, honestly or legitimately claim or possess.

The first is the British Falkland Islands.

The second is the moral high ground in the Falklands dispute.

27Alejo- So sorry for you! Yes a thieving lady - no doubt from the Argentine Embassy -did indeed grab all the brochures leaflets and maps on the Falkland Stand early the first morning - but no worry, the staff there had PLENTY more and they were still being handed out to people several days later.
Shows what a lot of pathetic “saddos” you Argentines are - you cannot bear the idea of other people learning the FACTS and REALITY about the Islands - simply because it would show Argentina up as being the thieving- twisted and bigoted nation that so many of you are.
