Mercosur foreign ministers meeting held this week in Paraguay to decide on the proposal to present the European Union for a trade agreement, apparently was not as “satisfactory” as announced because of Argentina's reluctance and 'reserves' about opening its market to the EU. Read full article

    This will happen without Argentina.

    How will this pan out?

I'm guessing that Argentina will refuse any deal and expect Brazil to tow the Mercosur line with lots of “south American solidarity” statements from Argentina.

Brazil will then ask Argentina to waive the Mercosur rules to allow a 2 speed union or risk the break up of the union entirely.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brazil backs down fearing destroying Mercosur is not worth the deal to them.

Gollum always leaves by the side door, as was his position when faced with FALKLANDERS who were willing to sit down and have talks with him in London.

I still have to read a cogent exposition as to why Argentina signing this with the EU would be positive.

@1. I hope not. I seem to recall that there was a statement from the EU that it was only interested in an agreement if it was the whole of mercosur. I trust that the EU has a mechanism to ensure that a third territory, e.g. argieland, doesn't benefit from trade with the EU.

Why don't they all throw Argentina out of Mercosur?

That should change things for the better by a great amount.

    And Pa-trollio would approve too.

All the delay has really weakened Mercosur's bargaining power. They can't throw out Argentina or Venezuela so the option is to press ahead will individual trade agreements.

Really, an agreement with EU would boost the economies of Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Venezuela is good for nothing and as long as Argentina acts like a spoiled selfish child, they need to be ignored. Meanwhile. Peru, Columbia and Chile enjoy free trade. Mercouri is a joke anyway as Argentina constantly violates free commerce with Brazil.

I think MercoSur is pretty much finished as a trade body.
No one takes it seriously anymore.
