Matthias Mueller has been named as Volkswagen (VW) chief executive in the wake of the scandal of rigged emissions tests in diesel cars. He succeeds Martin Winterkorn, who resigned on Wednesday. Mr. Mueller is a veteran hand of the company and was head of Posche's sports car division.

Tremor in FIFA: Swiss prosecutors open criminal proceedings against Blatter; Platini questioned

President Michel Platini says a payment to him being looked into by Swiss authorities was for work carried out under contract at FIFA. FIFA president Sepp Blatter has been questioned by Swiss federal police over alleged financial corruption. The attorney general's office in Switzerland said it has opened criminal proceedings against Blatter over possible criminal mismanagement and misappropriation of FIFA money.

Pope Francis kicked off his second United States stop in New York City with a Thursday evening prayer at St. Patrick's Cathedral, one of the United States best-known churches. Thousands of people lined up along Fifth Avenue to greet him with cheers as he made his way in his open-sided popemobile to the center of one of the US largest Roman Catholic archdioceses.

Brazil's Real recovers ground after Central bank promises to use all 'instruments available'

Brazil's depressed currency rebounded Thursday after the head of its central bank vowed to use all instruments in its arsenal to curtail the Real's collapse. Earlier in the day the Real tumbled to an all-time low of 4.248 to the U.S. dollar, but bounced back to 4.023 after central bank President Alexandre Tombini, in an unscheduled press briefing, did not rule out selling part of the country's $371 billion foreign reserves to calm the exchange rate market.

Guyana believes Venezuela's military display is a 'show of force', but in case send forcers to the border

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) says it’s ready to defend the country against any act of aggression at the country’s border with neighbour Venezuela.
