I'm sure France and Russia used to have a grand alliance back in the 19th and early 20th centuries - that was after Napoleon had attempted to incorporate Russia into his pan European empire. Didn't a lot of the Russian aristocracy speak French in order to set themselves apart from the common Russian man and woman?

In the same way that 'they' (i.e. the terrorists) hate us for our freedoms I presume that they hate the French and the Russians for their freedoms.
