Oh dear, it's not going well for the Chin, is it?

Having the upstart Indians doing better than the Middle Kingdom as the Chin and Han looked upon themselves, being far superior than any other peoples on the planet.

I have no doubt that the present rulers think of themselves in a similar manner.

    @1 ChrisR
You know they are playing the long game.
    5 year plans
    10/20/50/100 year plans etc...

I don't doubt your experience in these matters, but whilst the Chinese Govt. might be getting a little arrogant recently, do you seriously think hubris might get the better of them?
    I don't.
They don't actually need military power if another country can't afford it.
I still know people in The City. It is all about securing future resources, they say...
Their tentacles spread across all continents. They are hedging their bets, and working deep behind the scenes.
The Chinese are planning for the next century, whilst the 'West' is embroiled in the Middle East.
China doesn't give a 'F' for the Middle East.
I worry that the UK/US might lose sight of the 'bigger picture'.

@2 You are absolutely right. China has targeted and acquired key resources all over the world. The last thing we should want is for China to collapse because it will effect every single one of us negatively. It is all about the bigger picture.

Hi, great to see you back.

The only comment I see differently to you is:
“I worry that the UK/US might lose sight of the 'bigger picture'.”

Forgetting the Yanks, I don't think that the UK has seen the bigger picture since the early 1800's.

Like all politicians the government of the day only wants another term and another term, etc. Not quite 'bread and circuses' but not far off. :o(

China isn't planning for the next century any more than anyone else is...

    3. Elaine is worried about the bigger picture? What bigger picture? When China collapses the North America will pick up the mfg and supply what the world needs. There may be a slight adjustment but we will all be better off in the end.

China overpays for assets that nobody else wants, dont' forget where they're buying these assests are in places most people won't do business because the gov'ts are unstable, which means the next gov't can and probably will just nationalize whatever the Chinese bought and they can't do anything about it.

China is extremely unstable, an economy that's smoke and mirrors and a population held a bay by force.
    It won't last.

Even though I know you won't believe me I am right and will be proven so over time.
