China and Brazil agree on further cooperation and on climate change

Xi and Rousseff met in Paris where they are attended the opening ceremony of the two-week conference on climate change

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazil's Dilma Rousseff met in Paris on the sidelines of the ongoing climate talks, and agreed to strengthen cooperation in a number of areas including a common position regarding global warming.

 Both leaders were in Paris attending the opening ceremony of the two-week conference, officially called the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Xi said that China attaches great importance to its relations with Brazil and is willing to deepen political relations, promote communication and cooperation in various areas, and deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

The Chinese president urged the two sides to expand industrial investment cooperation in the fields of energy and resources, agriculture, infrastructure and manufacturing.

“China and Brazil could boost bilateral trade, enhance financial cooperation, and make effective use of the BRICS New Development Bank” said president Xi who also underlined Beijing's finance arrangements for Latin America providing support for promoting trade and investment between the two countries.

Regarding the Paris summit on climate change and how to address the challenge, Xi said that as leading developing countries and members of the BASIC group, China and Brazil share an extensive common interest in the issue.

“The two sides should work closely and utilize their respective advantages and influence to help yield a comprehensive, balanced, strong and legally binding outcome from the Paris conference, which safeguards the unity and interest of developing countries”, emphasized the Chinese leader.

President Rousseff said Brazil is satisfied with progress achieved in major cooperation projects such as transportation and port construction, and hopes “the two sides could also expand cooperation on agriculture and logistics”.

Regarding climate change and the Paris summit, “Brazil stands ready to enhance coordination and cooperation with China at the conference, and urges all parties to support the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, conforming to the joint interest of the international community”, pointed out the Brazilian president.

Finally Rousseff stated that Brazil fully supports China as host of the 2016 Group of Twenty (G20) summit.
