Still early days but I have confidence in the American people. Rubio's performance was more of a blow to Trump than losing to Cruz.

Meantime the Democratic race was still too close to call according to most commentators but a win according to Hillary. Haha!

    Still early days.

Oh Lordy Lordy, a religious extreme right wing nutter! God help America!

Its so sad that a nation with almost 400 million people can't come up with better candidates than these, Democrat or Republican. It doesnt matter much anyway because tbe whole place is based on puppetry with strings operated by an army of lobbyists working for large corporations. Sad. America is in decline and China is in stuttering ascendance. Bernie seems the only sane one amongst them!

Hillary seems to be the only one with the gravitas to become president - regardless of her policies.

The Republicans seem to be a parade of the embarrassing.

The one thing I do wish is that it didn't dominate UK news broadcasts. Just tell us who won when it's over. 99% of our population couldn't give two hoots about these nomination votes 12 months in advance.

I am just enjoying the spectacle!

Cruz, according to the main US papers is 'hated' by the Republicans so what is happening?

Trump in second, but magnanimous in 'defeat'. Don't write him off yet!

On The Republican side there's an 11 point enthusiasm advantage. The highest its ever been recorded.
Hillary may or may not have actually won since there's no recount and the winner is declared by her own Party that she happened to also loan a few million to a couple weeks ago. She also lost 9/1 the young vote which was one of the constituents that gave Odumbo the nomination. She should have been way ahead and she barely made it.
She is expected to lose NH.

Again you are all a bunch of foreign progs with little knowledge of how the USA works.

More newly registered Republican voted last night than was ever dreamed. The numbers astounded the local officials. In some places they ran out of registration forms, voting forms and room!

This is still the beginning but I am very happy with the 3 winners on the Republican side and that Hillary is being chased by a Socialist that has no chance to win.

The polls indicated Trump would win in Iowa and he lost. For a man campaigning on 'I am a winner and if you vote for me you will be a winner', he is one big loser now.

Most interesting is the surge in votes for Rubio - pretty much joint second. He is liked by the GOP and could end up being the Republican candidate.

As for the Democrats, the Clintons have never done well in Iowa and her win signifies more then a slim advantage. Iowa and New Hampshire are the most liberal states so Sanders was always going to do well.

Sanders is the polar opposite of Trump. Left of Corbyn. I can't see the middle ground voters accepting his left-wing policies. It will be the centre ground voters that will decide the election.

The media thinks Clinton has SC locked up with black voters. I have no idea why they think they'll turn out for her.
    No idea.
If they don't Sanders will get it.

I don't care about the Dem side. Hillary is very likely to be indicted and someone else may step in. That's the talk of the people in the know.

She literally won Iowa with a coin toss.

I've said all along its up to the voters to decide. Money and fame play a very little part in the outcomes.

What has the Dems crazy is the huge Republican turn out and the 11 point enthusiasm advantage. Which means Repubs will come out to vote in large numbers like they did in the last couple of elections when they took back the house and Senate.

People don't like Hillary, they never have. They know she's a liar even 80%+ of her own party think she's a scumbag.

Now we have to get the other Repub candidates to drop out so that its only a 3 person race. After super Tues we'll see who's on top and that's what will count.

I tried no to commment but:

“ Iowa and New Hampshire are the most liberal states so Sanders was always going to do well. ”

Really Elaine? More than California, Massachusetts, my state....neighbors to New Hampshire. Ever been there? We joke they are inbreed. Go up to Laconia, Naushua and even Portsmouth and see just how liberal a state NH is. I don;t think anyone in New England thinks NH is the most liberal, but it is far from being an extreme conservative state.

YB and Capn, in England a few of us are watching with interest, why? Because who is President matters. Over my lifetime we had the Cuban missile crisis, the Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, Ws Wars, most of which has involved us. The whole world is dominated by big American corporations. And then theres the Anglosphere a force for both good and evil.
Last time Mit the Muts campaign was great entertainment, this time the lineup is pretty gruesome on both sides and it hard to pick out an attractive candidate. I did like the look of Rubio until I saw he wants a big increase in the military. Please tell your favourites and the reasons why? Its interesting.

    16. I agree the office of USA Prez is the most powerful position in the world. The world should take some interest in the elections. The problem is you are all so uninformed and have no clue how Americans think. The reason we've become the richest most powerful nation the world has ever seen is because we're different that the rest of the world's citizenry.

Our military needs to be increased dramatically, especially the Navy and Airforce.

You should like that since we provide your defence.

OK - a simple example. An itsy-bitsy little country called North Korea actively and continuously threatens you and is systematically developing weapons that could destroy you.

Imagine if the mighty Kims had been ruling and behaving in that manner during the era of Ghengis Khan. Would he have implemented trade sanctions against Korea and allowed the Chinese to ignore them?

Power is only power if you can wield it and there have been plenty of empires that were able to dominate the world more effectively than the USA ever has.

Since you split the atom you made it impossible for any nation to so dominate the world again. Probably a good thing in the short term but it's likely to result in the destruction of mankind in the end.

YB, so insignificant and powerless he clings to the mere fact that he is American as some form of validation. It does not make YOU powerful, YB.

Of course, whoever is the Leader of the Free World is important to everyone. It is why we are interested. And it is not hard to understand U.S. politics. YB sounds like one of those thick-shit football supporters who think no woman can understand the offside rule.

The Republican line up is poor. Sanders is left of Corbyn which leaves Clinton as the only likely President. She has the whiff of something dodgy about her but is probably the best of what is on offer.

What a great country the U.S. is. Why couldn't they come up with better candidates. That is what Americans should be concerned about.

    #16 a reason question without a simple answer from me. Some background;

I used to be a Republican in the 90s and my military days. But as they became more religious and extreme, I faded. I am never always conservative but at times and some issues and am, and, conversely the same as a liberal.

I like someone who is intelligent enough to see the big picture and cost.
Diplomatic enough without being politically correct.
Truthful and plain speaking enough without insulting everyone.
Someone who can unite and not divide.
Someone who realizes that is we can piss on most on the Bill of Rights ten amendments, we can piss on ALL ten.

    Hillary repulses me.
    Trump embarrasses me.
    Cruz.....is Canadian.....until last year, and a puppet.
    Rubio is own by Singer.
    Sanders will accomplish nothing.

Not many left is there? It always comes down to “who will harm me the least” at the end of the day. I may have been able to vote for Kasich, who knows, but he is dead in the water.

That is my opinion. It's not right or wrong, stupid or smart, it's just that, my opinion that you asked for.

#18.....for the record, what Nation is richer...pure and simple, not per capita. Per Capita USA is #7 and Qatar is number #1. In share size, population and wealth, no one is. What nation do you think is richer and more powerful when push comes to shove? China? Russia?......seriously?

Captain, I hope that was somewhat of an answer. BTW, I do realize that the world looks on to us for leadership. I also feel that we need to do what is best for our country first before we can be a leader.

I think there are times our politicians will not be happen until they break the record in low turnout. 2014 was the lowest turnout since WWII.....just under 37% of eligible voters cast a ballot. Even 2012 was pathetic.....58%. Why........voter apathy.

USA, Inc. in the making. You wouldn't believe how the businesses are fucking the troops over in the Middle East. They have to buy everything these days, when 15 years ago most was free and/or issued. Halburton, Chenney's business ran fucking showers with electrical wiring through it and Christ, electrocuted like 18 soldiers. The stories and anecdotes are endless.

$45 for a 6 pack of coke, $100 for a weeks laundry......this is no bullshit. Officers can afford that but enlisted men cannot. They talked about Obama pissing on the troops.

The USA doesn't have an taxing problem, historically we are collecting a higher % of the GDP than we ever have.
    We have a speding problem
The Fed Gov't is historically spending more than we ever have as a % of GDP

If we held the line in spending we'd be balanced in 4 years.

Of course holding the line to Progs is like cutting off a hand. The first screams will be “what about the children” next will be “throw grandma off the cliff”

Apparently Hillary isn't saying she “won” Iowa and longer. The Socialists wants a recount. Everyone seems to forget she was up 40%+ over the Socialist before voting. Her loss is breathtaking.

On the Republican side 70%+ of the people voted for latinos and a black guy.
Go on call the Repubs racists.
    Go on.

Anyhoo, As I said this race is interesting. The sense is we have to right the ship and I don't see how Socialism or Obamaism will fill that need the voters are demanding.

I am sure that I must make this disclaimer because those less fortunate will assume this is support of Obama, I do not promote nor condone Obama and most of his policies.
They year ending 9/30/2009, 8 months after he assumed office and NOT responsible for that debt in that year, the national debt collectively was 11.910 trillion. As of 9/30/2015, the collective national debt was 18.150, an increase of 6.240 trillion (52%). Not exactly a 100% doubling.
Clinton took office and as of 9/30/1993, the collective national debt was 4.411 trillion and eight years later it was 5.807 trillion. An increase of 1.396 trillion (32%). Bush 11.910 less his start of 5.807 leaves us with 6.103 trillion (105%).
Reagan…..9/30/1981 national debt…998 billion, 9/30/1989-2.857 trillion, a 1.859 trillion increase (186%) increase. Now, you’ve laughed and called me old being in my 50’s, so I must assume that you do not recall those years. I do, those also were my service years.
My point is I am not so sure that you can hang your hat on the GOP/conservative hanger for reducing debt. Not by historical numbers anyway. BTW, those are treasury figures.

    The numbers are facts.

As a Republican supporter myself, I don't think so, and hope not (I am not an American citizen, but my wife is originally from Ann Arbor and we lived in the US for 9 years after finishing school). However, I would whole-heartedly agree with the analogy between the tea-partiers and the Taliban. They are an embarrassment and cancer within the party. They have no concept of tolerance, liberty or the separation of church and state. So proud to wallow in their own ignorance, just like the Taliban.

Chris I myself use to be a register Republican. One of the moderates when they were allowed to have the word spoken within the party walls. Sometime around Newts “Contract with American” which is about the time the GOP found religion I started seeing them in the early embryonic stages of their metamorphosis. Look at them now? No one can run for President without their own billionaire. Or is it a billionaire cannot control policy without his own personal politician?

It has been some 25 years ago now since I last visited America and remember then how the climate had altered somewhat in the country I was really impressed / amazed at some 20 years earlier but nothing existed like the Bat-shit mad 'Christians' many of whom are seeking 'The End Tine'.

When I think of all the great business people I met and became friends with I just cannot understand what happened that allowed nut-jobs such as Michele Bachmann to get elected to the US Congress?

And Antonin Scalia! He believes in the Devil and has publically announced that the “Devil is getting wilier because we don't see him so often!”

“What made the USA special at one time no longer exists.” And it's the worse for it as far as I am concerned.

The bible thumpers as we so sweetly refer to them. Ted Cruz the morning after Iowa:

    What the fuck!!

The Muslims will be cutting heads off and the Christian GOP's will be stitching vagina's closed, because to them.....sex is evil and only for creating little future GOP voters.

I am waiting for Trump to sue Cruz for not being eligible for POTUS. He had duel citizenship up until last year when he renounced it. He is a strict interpreter of the Constitution.....all the way to the definition of a natural born American, then it changes......lol

For the last 8 months people (mainly Republicans) have been figuring how to get Trump to shut up. Somebody timed his concession speech in Iowa at 3.5 minutes - so I guess we all know the answer.

Not that Cruz is any better. But he will run into that same problem that Santorum had in 2012.

The real winner of the the GOP Iowa race is Rubio. He almost beat Trump.

But the real story of Iowa is Sanders. Clinton think she won but the reality is otherwise.

Honestly....I don't think that there is one. In a republic democracy of almost 320 million and many are, well, not exactly Einsteins. Like highschool, there are groups within the parties, each party. I've always felt that we needed a few more parties to enable negotiation and compromise. Liberals believe “we” want it this way and conservatives think “we” want it that way. In reality, “we” want it somewhere in between what “they” want.

When we started outsourcing military operations, covert shit, it was really a sign of things to come. It really started with the attack on the USPS years ago. As I always said, they will not be happy until SCOTUS is a board of directors, POTUS is a CEO, the Constitution is corporate by laws............

The answer.........informed voting. Oh well, we're fucked!!

Cut the amount of money allowed for campaigning.

Stop treating politics as a team game.

Both would be a step in the right direction. The U.S. was never set up as or meant to be a two party - them or us - political game. I am not sure how it can be walked back but cutting campaign funding would neuter a lot of the corporate power.

Note: The discussion is about U.S. politics. I am not claiming the UK is better or worse etc. etc. etc.

I know you must understand how a bill is generate, moves and dies in the house, even before it can go to the Senate. Who would:

    1- start a bill
    2- co-sponsor it
3- allow it the get to the floor?

So yes, you are correct in theory, I was speaking in reality....,...with all due respect.

Oh, I know it is near impossible to change the current system. Too much money involved and too many powerful people benefit from the current system.

I was just musing out loud. However, the voters in general seem more than tired of the situation. The American people can achieve change if enough are motivated to do so.

The Canadian system is far, far, far, far from perfect; but we are trying to get a handle on it:

Unions, corporations, organizations (of any kind) are not allowed to donate to federal political parties or politicians. Only individual (Canadian) citizens can donate, up to a maximum of $1525.00/year (you'll receive a $625.00 tax credit for doing so).
No politician is allowed to use their own money, or any equivalent for campaigning (except for their own $1525.00/year). This includes, for instance, even using your own private plane for travel. There are hard-cap limits on spending.

The elections act does not allow corporations, unions, organizations and even individuals to run political-orientated adds during a campaign (I know that this would never stand a first amendment challenge in the US). They can run ads before and after the campaign though.

Paid lobbyists must be registered and follow the “Lobbying Act” ( http://www.ocl-cal.gc.ca/eic/site/012.nsf/eng/00403.html ).
For instance, designated public office holders are not allowed to lobby until five years after they last held public office. All meetings are “of record” (not recorded, but the meeting itself is calendared) and made available to the public.

It is rather interventionistic, but still preferable to runaway money and influence.

Google “Germany collapse” and see all the news articles that started popping up last month.

And on another note, I have said for years China had nowhere near enough U$ to get them out of their mess. People are now saying if the outflows keep up like they did in 2015 (I predict they will be worse) they'll be out of cash next year.

You were not on a five year vacation. You claim that but you set up home in Argentina. You rented a house long -term. Hired staff - so many one has to wonder if you can wipe your own arse. Bought a car and hired a driver. That is not a vacation; that is setting up home in another country for five years. That you were unable to work there is irrelevant. (Though some people claim that you did). You couldn't hack it there and went home with your tail between your legs. Now you are bitter and desperate for Argentina to fail because your failure would seem diminished.

You have a problem with your memory, YB.

You left the country every three months because you had to. All the illegals living in Argentina have to do that.

You moved to Argentina for five years, it didn't work out and now you are back working in the U.S. Poor career planning.

If you were not such a loser you would not spend so much time trying to convince everyone you are a winner just because by accident of birth you are an American. That took no effort just a couple of minutes of your father's time and nine months of your mother's. You are fortunate but not a success because of that.

You rolled with the 'dirty animals' - your words for Argentines - for five years. What does that say about you?

Sweetie, we're from different classes obviously. It was much cheaper for me to live in an amazing house than live in a hotel. It was safer for me to have my own driver and car. Remember cars go up in value in Argentina. I also paid my rent 1 year in advance in U$. So the last year I paid and regretted it. I did leave before the year was up though and let a friend finish out the lease.

I stayed a year too long that is true. It kind of snuck up on me and I didn't realize how horrible it was until I actually got out of there.
I think of it as a Stockholm syndrome.

Thanks for your advice. My career is fine. I've been very lucky my whole life.

Yes being born an American is a blessing. I think you'd agree that I am one of the proudest Americans on here. I love my country but it did take living outside of it to appreciate it as much as I do now.

I was never illegal in Argentina. I was merely a tourist.

Pretty much everyone I knew in Argentina was rich, some of them very rich some of them very famous (for an Argentine, nobody here would know them)

You often try to paint what I say with a very broad brush.
That's part of your reading comprehension problem.

You argue like the Sistahs, misquoting, using partial quotes, one would think after all of this time you'd realize I remember everything I post.

You set up home in Argentina. Tourists do not hire staff. They don't buy cars. Kinda slow aren't you to take five years to realise what a terrible place you were in? But you don't come across as the brightest crayon in the box.

Oh, I am sure you tried to jump a class or two with your dollars going further in Argentina. The dream didn't quite work out did it?

You failed. And you can't leave it alone, can you? Still on a message board obsessed with Argentina. How many years have you been here after your five year 'vacation'?

I never have to be a climber although I've known plenty. I've always been part of the right people my family has been for almost 400yrs.

It didn't take me 5 years, you really do need to learn to read, it started getting bad the last year. I am not sure why you don't understand this? I had a great time then I didn't. I said about 1000X, what really drove it home were the commando assaults and the boxing in of the cars of my neighbors that got me thinking I've got to get out and get out but I should have done it a year earlier.

I like your political system and the idea of a presidency but it seems to have become constipated and the slave of big business far more than ours, although ours is heading in the same direction unfortunately. Rather than the establishment running things totally here, big business and corruption have surfaced.
What puzzles me is how a huge nation, six times the size of ours produces so few decent leadership candidates especially as the GOP represents the original Americans with a proud history progress.
There is a definate trend of Europe becoming more Muslim but Britain isnt full of shame like Germany and the rest are waking up too. Our borders are a little porous and we do control them better though not well enough.

I notice Trump WON at NH!

All the others only got 10% whilst he got 30%. The others are 'considering their position@! I bet they are.

“The polls indicated Trump would win in Iowa and he lost. For a man campaigning on 'I am a winner and if you vote for me you will be a winner', he is one big loser now.”
