The name of a new British polar research vessel will be chosen by a panel of experts, even if the public overwhelmingly votes to call it Boaty McBoatface. Lord West, ex-First Sea Lord, said he was rather proud “silly names” had been suggested but hoped none were chosen. Read full article

I think that the UK should revert to the historically ingrained tradition in nautical language and lore for many centuries of naming their Navis after bonnie lasses...

Out with all those honest but stuffy old military male names...

Ler's bestow this vessel with a modern, strong & benevolent feminine spirit that will carry her seafarers across them treacherous oceans....

Me vote goes to...: Maria Leijerstam

    Chuckle chuckle...

No chance. The favourite so far by public vote is Boaty McBoatface.

If i know the Engrish Establishment right..., they will ignore the public vote and name her “Endurance” or something similar...

I'd have thought give the great military history in the South Atlantic:

RRS Invincible, would be a good choice

For a patrol vessel, “Boaty McBoatface” is no sillier than “Islas Malvinas.”

I'm sure RRS Conqueror would go down well with the neighbours! “Think” would like that.

How about HMS Phoenix in after the famous USN Cruiser, the only major warship I damaged at Pearl Harbor?

She died of shame in 1982.

Whatever they decide to paint on the bow, it will forever be known as Boaty McBoatFace. All it needs now is for the Queen to launch it.

@11 “ ...look on the bright side, I could have been argentine,...”

Not likely. You don't appear to have a sufficiently developed Stupid Gland.

Some say, future warships should have a rounded front.

I can't see any reason why Boaty McBoatface is unacceptable.

If you are stuck in the ice and awaiting rescue seeing this big 'red faced ship' coming to save you is bound to put a smile on your face and a comical name would set the scene nicely.

I wouldn't want it named 'Lord West' that's for sure.

    It looks ok,
a bit sharp at one end,

    still,
I hope its engines are better than ours are turning out to be.

    @ 17 Marti Llazo

Impressive gun for shooting stuff on the surface up to the edge of the curve.

Kills through five work spaces as well, just like the 32mm Rardon cannon will up to 6 miles.

Not much use for just beyond the horizon though because of the relatively flat trajectory but I suppose the missiles can handle that.

Did you notice the specification was based on 2005, I wonder what it can really do? :o)

From what I have read in defence journals, it may never enter service. There are strong doubts as to it's seaworthiness

    mmmm
tell me, I seem to remember reading a book abt the America civil war, and the blockade by the yanks against the rebels,

im sure I saw drawings/pictures of the same ship design,
so it could well be design's from the 1860,

    or am I totally wrong.

@12 You may be thinking of these, though they were built that way for different reasons, and were not very good in “mar gruesa.”

    And the similarities are there.

I suppose time will tell if they are fit for service or action when the time comes.
