Disclaimer & comment rulesThere can be no doubt that the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar remain dear to the majority of British hearts. To the extent that, though Britain's position always remains low key, it is the British people that will demand action in appropriate circumstances. That in addition to the stated positions of all UK political parties.
May 17th, 2016 - 09:13 am - Link - Report abuse 0Both argieland and spain can look forward, should they wish, to seeing a modern equivalent of the '82 Task Force. It is most likely that the first elements of a 21st century task force will be airborne. There is no information on the stocks of munitions and weapons held on the Falklands, but it is notable that the British Army regularly holds live-firing exercises to dispose of munitions getting close to their use by dates. The RAF Voyager transport aircraft can transport and land 4,200 troops, with their personal equipment, in one non-stop flight, over about 16 hours. The 1,200 troops and 4 combat aircraft already on the Islands should be sufficient to allow that 16 hours.
Regarding spain, it would be foolish to indulge in any violence. HMS Albion, Bulwark and Ocean would be there in no time complete with attack and transport helicopters, tanks (if necessary) and troops. In a year or two, they could be joined by Britain's 2 new aircraft carriers complete with more helicopters and fast jets. The two carriers could virtually match spain in terms of fast jets.
Argieland and spain should think about these things and recollect that Britain is willing to return violence for violence.
